The reconstructed Interstate 90/State Highway 41 interchange in Post Falls, Idaho, is now fully open, giving nearby businesses their first unobstructed access in about four years. The single-point urban interchange (SPUI) was completed in fall 2026 after construction that began in 2022. Business owners expect easier travel to bring customers back, but early evidence is mixed: The Locker Room reports faster-moving traffic and happier customers, while other businesses have not yet seen a clear sales increase.
What changed at the I-90 and SH-41 interchange?
Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) replaced the former interchange with a single-point urban interchange, or SPUI. All entrance and exit ramps converge at one signalized intersection, rather than operating as separate ramp intersections.

ITD’s project page says crews have finished constructing the SPUI, and KXLY reported the interchange fully completed on October 26, 2026.

ITD’s July 2, 2026 update said the last fully reconstructed on-ramp was scheduled to open July 8, with the overall upgrade expected to finish later that fall. The project had originally been scheduled for completion in 2025; KXLY attributed the delay to union strikes the previous summer.

How did construction affect nearby businesses?
Businesses near the interchange dealt with restricted access, changing traffic patterns and a sustained reduction in passing customers while crews worked. KXLY reported that gasoline sales at one nearby station fell by more than half during construction, according to the station’s unnamed owner.
That figure describes one business’s experience, not a measured decline across Post Falls. The available reporting does not provide a citywide sales survey, a named gas-station operator or a controlled before-and-after study. Effects also varied by business model: a store that relies on drive-by visits can be affected immediately by a closed ramp, while an appointment-based business may see a different pattern.

- Construction barriers and bridge work reduced visibility and made entrances harder to reach at different stages.
Are Post Falls businesses seeing more customers now?
Some businesses report an immediate improvement, but there is not enough evidence to call it a broad sales rebound. Jeremy Daley, manager of The Locker Room, told KXLY, “With the interchange, it’s moving quick,” and said, “Customers are happier now.” His comments followed the opening of the eastbound ramp and point to a better customer experience as traffic flows more directly.
Other nearby businesses were still waiting for a clear lift when KXLY reported on the completion. A newly open interchange can restore access before it restores revenue: customers may need time to change their routes, and owners may need several weeks or months of normal traffic to distinguish a lasting trend from opening-week curiosity.

- Several consecutive weeks of customer counts or sales above the construction-period baseline.
- Improvement reported by businesses with different customer patterns, including fuel, retail and appointment-based operations.
- Stable travel times and predictable ramp access after temporary work is finished.
- Evidence that returning customers are coming from normal local routes, not only from a short-term completion event.
Will the completed interchange boost sales citywide?
It may improve the conditions for local commerce, but no published evidence yet proves a citywide increase. The SPUI is designed to improve traffic capacity and safety, and the widened I-90 corridor is intended to support future expansion. Better pedestrian and bicycle connections could also help businesses that serve nearby residents without car access.
The most defensible conclusion is narrower: completion removes a major access obstacle. Whether that becomes higher sales depends on traffic volumes, travel times, visibility from the new approaches and each business’s dependence on passing customers. Owners should compare customer counts and revenue with the same weeks in prior years rather than relying on a single day or anecdotal impression.

- Track a consistent baseline. Record weekly transactions, fuel gallons or appointment volume and compare them with equivalent pre-construction periods.
- Separate access from demand. Note whether customers mention the new ramps, shorter trips or easier navigation, rather than assuming every change comes from the interchange.
- Check all approaches. The SPUI concentrates movement at one signal, so an improvement on one approach may not affect every frontage road or driveway equally.
- Monitor walking and cycling access. Trail improvements may produce a different, slower-building customer effect than restored vehicle traffic.
- Report persistent problems. If signs, lane markings or driveway access remain confusing, document the location and contact the appropriate transportation or local agency.
What is the lasting significance of the project?
The $78 million reconstruction is more than a ramp replacement. It combines a new interchange layout with bridge work, additional roadway capacity and nonmotorized connections. Those elements are intended to make the corridor safer and more resilient as Post Falls grows.
