A standard incandescent-halogen bulb does not have a positive and negative pin. Its tungsten filament is a resistive load, so either pin can normally connect to either side of the supply. This applies on both AC and DC circuits.
The important qualification is that polarity may matter in the fixture wiring, transformer, driver, or an LED replacement lamp. Always verify the bulb’s base, voltage, wattage, and installation instructions before fitting it.

Why halogen bulb polarity normally does not matter
A halogen bulb works by passing current through a tungsten filament until it becomes hot and produces light. Unlike an LED or other electronic component, the filament is not direction-sensitive. Reversing the two connections does not change how the lamp operates.
For that reason, an ordinary two-pin halogen capsule generally has no marked + or − pin. The pins are the two ends of the filament circuit, not separate positive and negative terminals. Manufacturer descriptions of miniature bi-pin lampholders specify the mechanical base and electrical ratings rather than assigning polarity to the lamp contacts; see Leviton’s 80054 bi-pin lampholder specifications.

AC and DC supplies
AC lighting
On an AC circuit, the direction of current continually alternates. A permanent positive pin therefore does not exist. Many low-voltage halogen fixtures use an AC transformer, although the exact fixture must be checked rather than assumed.
DC lighting
A halogen filament will also normally light with either polarity on a correctly rated DC supply. Polarity independence does not make the voltage interchangeable: a 12-volt bulb must not be connected directly to a 120-volt or 230-volt supply. Match the voltage printed on the lamp and fixture, and ensure the supply, wiring, connectors, and switch can handle the lamp load. For example, manufacturers sell G4 halogen capsules in several 12-volt wattages, including 5 W, 10 W, and 20 W; the base alone does not establish the voltage. See the Plusrite halogen catalog.

Identify the base before inserting the bulb
Two pins do not guarantee that bulbs are interchangeable. Base families differ in pin spacing, pin size, shape, voltage options, and insertion method. Common types include:
| Base | Typical identification | Important point |
|---|---|---|
| G4 | 4.0 mm pin spacing | Often used for small low-voltage capsule lamps, but verify the lamp marking. |
| G5.3/GU5.3 | Approximately 5.33 mm spacing | Common on MR16 lamps; many are low voltage, but the base does not prove the supply voltage. |
| G6.35/GY6.35 | 6.35 mm spacing | Physically different from G4 and G5.3. |
| G8 and G9 | Different pin and socket constructions | Do not substitute based only on appearance. |
| GU10 | 10 mm twist-lock contacts | Align the contacts, insert, and rotate; it is not an ordinary straight push-in bi-pin lamp. |
The numbers in names such as G4, G5.3, and G6.35 describe the base dimensions or pin spacing—not electrical polarity. Use the complete lamp marking and the fixture documentation. The Halco identification guide and Eco-Smart lamp specifications show the differences between common base families.

Some lamps are not bi-pin at all. R7s lamps have recessed contacts at each end, while E26/E27 and similar lamps use screw bases. Their connections and installation methods should not be treated as interchangeable with a two-pin capsule.

- work with either polarity;
- require a particular DC orientation;
- include a rectifier or driver for AC/DC operation; or
- be intended only for AC, only for DC, or for a specified voltage range.
If an LED works in one orientation but not the other, that is an LED polarity issue—not evidence that the original halogen filament had a positive pin. Check the exact LED model’s markings and datasheet. Also verify transformer minimum-load requirements, dimmer compatibility, enclosure approval, and heat dissipation.
Fixture and supply wiring
A low-voltage supply may have conductors marked + and −. Preserve those markings when connecting the supply to the fixture. The halogen filament may be indifferent to which lamp pin receives positive DC, but a driver, control board, dimmer, or future LED replacement may not be.

Do not bypass or remove a transformer merely because a replacement lamp has the same-looking base. Identify the fixture, supply voltage, wiring, and replacement type first. If exposed mains wiring is involved or the circuit is uncertain, use a qualified electrician.

- Turn off the power. Unplug the fixture or switch off the appropriate circuit breaker. Do not rely only on a wall switch when wiring is exposed.
- Let the lamp cool. Halogen bulbs and their sockets operate at very high temperatures, and quartz-halogen lamps operate under pressure. Leviton’s product warning emphasizes the need for suitable sockets, lead wires, wattage, and fixture applications.
- Read the markings. Confirm the base, voltage, wattage, dimensions, and lamp type.
- Match the socket. Compare pin spacing and diameter. Never force a G4 into a G5.3 or G6.35 socket, even if it appears to make contact.
- Insert the pins straight. For a push-in lamp, both pins should enter evenly. For a GU10 lamp, align the contacts and twist it into the locked position.
- Do not touch the quartz envelope. Use clean gloves, a tissue, or the lamp packaging. Skin oils and contamination can create hot spots and shorten the bulb’s life.
- Restore power and test. If it does not light, switch the power off again before inspecting it.
If the bulb does not light
Work through these checks in order:
- Wrong base: Compare the replacement’s markings and pin spacing with the old lamp. Similar-looking bases are not necessarily compatible.
- Wrong voltage: Check both the lamp and the fixture. A 12-volt lamp on line voltage can fail immediately and create a serious hazard.
- Failed transformer or driver: A low-voltage transformer may have failed or overheated. An LED retrofit may also be incompatible with the existing transformer’s minimum load.
- Damaged socket: Burning, melting, cracking, corrosion, or loose contacts indicate that the socket may need replacement, not just a new bulb. Select a replacement by voltage, current, wattage, temperature, mounting style, and lead-wire rating—not pin spacing alone. Examples of suitable high-temperature socket specifications are provided by BulbsPro and B&P Lamp Supply.
- Broken pin: A failed lamp can leave a contact in the socket. Disconnect power before attempting removal, and do not insert another bulb into a blocked or damaged socket.
- LED polarity or dimmer problem: Check the LED instructions and the dimmer’s compatibility. Try the permitted orientation only with power disconnected.
- Loose connection or flicker: Investigate poor socket tension, loose wiring, a failing transformer, a dimmer problem, or an incompatible LED.
Can a multimeter test the bulb?
Yes. With the bulb removed and power disconnected, place the meter across its two pins. A working halogen filament should show continuity or a finite resistance. An open circuit usually indicates a broken filament.

A continuity reading does not confirm that the bulb has the correct voltage, wattage, or base. Never perform a continuity test on an energized fixture. Testing the socket or supply requires appropriate electrical knowledge and equipment.
Bottom line
For a standard incandescent-halogen bulb, neither pin is positive or negative: either pin can normally connect to either side of the circuit. The more important checks are the exact base, voltage, wattage, socket condition, and heat rating. If the replacement is LED, or the fixture has marked DC wiring, a transformer, driver, or dimmer, follow the manufacturer’s polarity and compatibility requirements instead.
