Portugal’s football federation has placed Cristiano Ronaldo under a preventive suspension while it investigates his departure from the national team camp. The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) opened an urgent disciplinary case; as of 11 October 2026, no final penalty had been reported. The suspension is an interim measure, not a finding that Ronaldo breached the rules.
What the FPF decided
In a statement reproduced by Ge on 10 October, the FPF said its Non-Professional Section had decided on 9 October to open disciplinary proceedings against Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro. The inquiry is intended to determine whether the reported facts have disciplinary significance. The federation said those facts were reported to it on 7 October.

The FPF ordered a non-automatic preventive suspension, classified the case as urgent and sent it to the federation’s Disciplinary Investigation Committee on 10 October. It also said the case file would not be made public before the investigation concludes.

Ge reported that Ronaldo left Portugal’s camp in Copenhagen on 30 September, ahead of the match against Denmark. Coverage connected his departure to a dispute with coach Jorge Jesus about his role in the team. That account is reporting about the circumstances, not an adjudicated finding by the FPF.

Ronaldo’s explanation centered on the Norway match: he said the coach had asked whether he could play 30 minutes, then had him warm up without sending him on. The Guardian quoted Ronaldo describing the dispute this way: “The manager had broken his word to me.” That is Ronaldo’s characterization of events; the federation has not publicly established that there was an agreement or ruled on the dispute.
Preventive suspension versus a final penalty
The current suspension applies while the proceedings are pending. It should not be confused with a final sanction: the FPF has not announced a decision on whether Ronaldo committed an offense or what consequence, if any, would follow.

The Associated Press reported that FPF disciplinary regulations provide for a suspension of one to six months plus a fine when a player leaves or fails to appear at a national-team activity without justification. That is a reported possible consequence under the rule, not the penalty imposed on Ronaldo. AP also said it was unclear whether his departure would be considered justified. The available reports do not specify a deadline for the urgent investigation or establish whether the interim suspension bars him from a particular future appearance.
What Ronaldo and Portugal have said
AP and The Guardian reported that Ronaldo apologized to supporters and said he expected consequences or would serve any suspension imposed. AP quoted him saying: “Anyone in football as I am knows that, regardless of each person’s status, the rules are the same for everyone.” His remarks do not settle the case; the FPF’s investigation remains the process that will determine its outcome.

On 10 October, FPF president Pedro Proença expressed a collective desire for Ronaldo to return in November, according to The Guardian. That was a stated hope, not confirmation that Ronaldo had been cleared, that he would be eligible, or that a return date had been set. The disciplinary process was described as independent.
What happens next
The matter is with the FPF’s Disciplinary Investigation Committee. Because the federation says the file will remain private until the investigation ends, public reporting may not reveal the evidence or procedural steps in the meantime. As of 11 October 2026, the reports available described an ongoing inquiry and interim suspension, with no final ruling or penalty announced.
