Use both measures when practical, because they solve different parts of the exposure problem. Closing windows and reducing leakage limits new road dust and exhaust from entering. A correctly sized portable HEPA air cleaner filters particles that are already in the room. Neither approach is a complete solution, and no available evidence establishes a construction-specific percentage reduction or a universal winner. During periods of high outdoor pollution, keep windows closed, operate filtration in occupied rooms, and preserve safe ventilation and emergency exits.
What each option actually does
Road construction can increase airborne dust near a property. Traffic around the work zone can also add exhaust particles. Outdoor particulate matter (PM) enters a house through open windows and doors, but it can also move through small cracks and crevices. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) notes that car exhaust, road dust, pollen and smoke contain PM, and that outdoor PM can be higher near busy roads.

The two measures act at different points in that pathway:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Window closing and weatherization are source-reduction measures. They reduce one route by which outdoor particles enter. They do not remove particles that are already indoors, and a home is not made perfectly airtight.
- A portable air cleaner is a room-level removal measure. Its filter captures some airborne particles after they are inside. It normally serves one room or defined area rather than an entire house.
EPA’s Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home, second edition (August 2018), describes filtration as a supplement to reducing pollutant sources and ventilating with clean outdoor air. That principle applies here: stop as much new dust as possible, then clean the air that remains.

Which should you prioritize?
If outdoor pollution is currently high and your windows are open, closing them is the fastest way to stop that direct inflow. If windows are already closed but dust has entered, or if people are spending hours in one room, a properly sized portable cleaner adds protection. For most homes beside road work, the practical sequence is:
- Check local outdoor air-quality information and construction conditions.
- Close windows and exterior doors when outdoor pollutants are elevated.
- Run a portable cleaner in the room people use most, sized by its particle CADR.
- Use compatible central-HVAC filtration if available.
- Remove settled dust with damp cleaning rather than methods that stir it back into the air.
This is a layered strategy, not proof that one product or technique will eliminate exposure. Construction-specific conditions vary too much for a single ranking to apply to every building.
Comparison at a glance
| Question | Closing or weatherizing windows | Portable particle air cleaner | Central HVAC filtration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where it acts | At openings where outdoor air can enter | Inside one room or area | At the HVAC system, when the blower operates |
| Main benefit | Reduces new outdoor dust and exhaust entering through windows | Removes some airborne particles already indoors | Can distribute filtered air to multiple rooms served by the system |
| What it cannot do | Remove particles already inside or seal every leakage path | Remove every pollutant or clean the whole home from one location | Filter rooms the system does not serve or operate when the system is off |
| Capacity check | Inspect the relevant opening and building condition; no universal sealing rating is established here | Match room area to particle CADR; higher ceilings need more capacity | Confirm the equipment can handle the chosen filter, preferably with technician advice |
| Comfort trade-off | Less outdoor-air exchange can make a room feel stuffy | Higher fan speeds usually move more air but can be noisier | Higher-resistance filters may affect system airflow if incompatible |
| Gas and odor control | Limits entry only while openings remain closed | Particle CADR does not measure gas removal; gas-targeted media are needed | Depends on the installed filter and system design |
Step 1: Decide when windows should stay closed
Use outdoor conditions, not a fixed clock
Check your local air-quality information and observe the work schedule. Close windows when outdoor pollutants or visible dust are high, when heavy equipment is operating nearby, or when traffic is producing a noticeable plume. Conditions can change during the day; a window that was reasonable to open in the morning may be a poor choice during active excavation or hauling.
When outdoor air is cleaner, brief ventilation can reduce stuffiness. EPA identifies ventilation with clean outdoor air as one of the most effective ways to improve indoor air, so do not assume that permanently sealing every opening is automatically healthier.
Reduce the obvious entry routes
Keep exterior doors closed except when people are passing through. Ask household members to avoid propping doors open. Close windows on the side facing the road first, but remember that particles can enter through other openings and through leakage around frames. Weatherization can reduce leakage, yet the available guidance does not establish a particular sealant, film, kit or construction method as best for this situation.
Protect emergency egress
Do not install a barrier that prevents a bedroom or other required exit window from opening in an emergency. Do not block doors, fire escapes or access routes with equipment or materials. A tighter opening is useful only if occupants can still leave safely and emergency responders can reach the home.
Step 2: Size a portable cleaner by CADR
CADR means clean air delivery rate. It is the rate at which a cleaner supplies air that has had particles removed. For a portable unit, compare the listed particle CADR with the floor area of the room where it will run. EPA’s guide gives these minimum estimates for an 8-foot ceiling:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →| Room area | Minimum estimated CADR | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| 100 square feet | 65 cfm | Baseline estimate for a small room |
| 200 square feet | 130 cfm | Approximately double the 100-square-foot requirement |
| 300 square feet | 195 cfm | Use the rating for the full occupied area |
| 400 square feet | 260 cfm | Check that the published rating is a particle CADR |
| 500 square feet | 325 cfm | A larger room may need a larger unit or more than one unit |
| 600 square feet | 390 cfm | Higher ceilings require greater capacity than this estimate |
These are guide estimates, not measurements from a road-construction exposure study. An 8-foot ceiling is assumed; rooms with higher ceilings contain more air and may require a greater CADR. If a home has a large open-plan space, measure the area that the cleaner is expected to serve rather than assuming a unit rated for a small closed room will clean the entire floor.
Look for a meaningful particle rating
For dust and PM, a particle CADR and a high-efficiency particle filter are the relevant specifications. The product should state the room area or CADR clearly. A marketing claim such as “captures fine particles” is less useful than a measured rating that can be compared with the table.
Avoid treating CADR as an odor or exhaust-gas score. Particle CADR does not rate removal of gases. If exhaust odors are a concern, EPA advises considering activated carbon or another filter designed for gases. Carbon performance depends on having a substantial amount of sorbent material; a thin carbon layer may provide limited capacity.

Step 3: Place and operate the portable cleaner correctly
Give the intake and outlet room
Set the cleaner where its intake and filtered-air outlet are not blocked by a wall, curtain, furniture or stored construction materials. Place it in the occupied room, with the door positioned according to the area you want to treat. A unit in a distant hallway will not clean a bedroom as effectively as one sized and placed in that bedroom.

Higher fan speeds and longer operating times generally move more air through the filter. Use a higher setting during active dust events or after a door has been opened, then choose a quieter setting if noise would otherwise cause people to switch the unit off. EPA notes that some products publish noise ratings; use those ratings when comparing units for bedrooms or work areas.
Maintain the filter
Follow the unit’s replacement or cleaning instructions. A loaded filter can restrict airflow, while a filter changed too early wastes usable capacity. Keep a spare available if construction is expected to last for weeks. The correct interval depends on dust loading, operating hours and the unit’s design; there is no single replacement schedule for every cleaner.
Step 4: Use central HVAC filtration when the system supports it
For a home with forced-air heating or cooling, EPA recommends a MERV 13 filter, or the highest MERV level the system can accommodate. MERV is the Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value used to describe filter performance. A higher rating is not automatically appropriate: a filter that is too restrictive for the equipment can reduce airflow or create system problems.
- Find the filter size and the current filter rating.
- Check the equipment documentation for the maximum supported filter resistance or MERV level.
- If that information is unclear, ask a qualified HVAC technician before installing a higher-resistance filter.
- Run the system when filtration is needed, recognizing that the filter works only while air is moving through it.
Central filtration can cover several rooms served by the duct system, but it does not replace a portable cleaner in an unserved room. It also cannot filter air while the system is off unless the equipment has a separate continuous-fan or air-cleaning mode.

Step 5: Clean settled dust without making more airborne particles
Not all construction dust remains suspended. Particles settle on floors, sills, furniture and other surfaces. Damp wiping or damp mopping captures settled dust instead of sending it back into the air. Work methodically from cleaner surfaces toward dirtier ones, and dispose of collected material according to local waste rules.
During a high-pollution period, avoid dry sweeping or other activities that visibly create a cloud. If cleaning causes irritation, stop, close the room, and allow filtration to run before resuming. A portable cleaner removes airborne particles; it does not substitute for removing dust deposits from surfaces.
Particles, gases and odors are different problems
Road dust is primarily a particle concern, while vehicle exhaust can include gases as well as particles. A particle filter can reduce airborne PM but cannot be assumed to remove every gas. Carbon or another gas-targeted medium may help with some odors and gases when present in sufficient quantity, but the available guidance does not provide a construction-specific performance percentage.
Do not use a device that intentionally produces ozone as an air-cleaning strategy. Ozone is itself an indoor air pollutant, and producing it does not make a purifier a safer choice for road dust.

The room has no practical place for a cleaner
Window closing still reduces entry even when a suitable portable unit is unavailable. It is also useful in rooms that are unoccupied but connected to the rest of the home through open doors.
The cleaner is undersized
A small unit running at maximum speed may not deliver enough clean air for a large room. Until a correctly sized option is available, limiting the incoming source is the more reliable immediate action.
When a portable cleaner adds the most value
Particles have already entered
Closing a window cannot remove dust deposited or suspended indoors. Filtration can reduce the airborne portion while damp cleaning addresses what has settled.

No direct head-to-head study establishes that a portable purifier or window sealing always performs better beside road construction. Practical results depend on:
- How much dust the project generates and how long the work lasts.
- Wind direction, traffic volume and the distance from the road.
- Building leakage around windows, doors, vents and other penetrations.
- Whether windows are opened and how often exterior doors are used.
- Room size, ceiling height, purifier CADR and fan setting.
- Whether central HVAC runs and what filter it can safely use.
- The mixture of particles and gases in the outdoor air.
Because these variables differ from site to site, do not apply a percentage reduction from another setting to your home. The EPA material provides general particle-infiltration and filtration principles, not a construction-specific efficacy test.
DIY air cleaners: what to know
EPA reports that well-built do-it-yourself air cleaners have performed similarly to commercial units in some studies. Results vary with the design, fan, filter, construction quality and operating conditions. For a purchase decision, a measured CADR is generally more useful than an unverified claim that a homemade assembly will clean a particular room.
If you build or use a DIY unit, keep the fan and filter assembly stable, maintain unobstructed airflow, and inspect it for bypass gaps or damage. Do not place it where it can tip, block an exit, or interfere with heating equipment. A DIY assembly should not be treated as certified for a particular room unless its performance has been measured.
Troubleshooting common problems
Dust is still visible after the windows are closed
Check other openings and door use, then verify that the cleaner is sized for the room and that its intake and outlet are clear. Damp-clean settled surfaces. If outdoor dust is entering through a persistent building defect, a qualified building professional may need to inspect it; avoid relying on an improvised seal that compromises ventilation or egress.

The cleaner is running but the room still smells like exhaust
Confirm that you are evaluating a gas odor rather than only particles. Particle CADR does not measure gas removal. A filter with an appropriate amount of activated carbon or other gas-targeted media may be relevant, but no filter removes every pollutant.
The room feels stuffy with the windows closed
Check outdoor conditions and ventilate only when outdoor air is acceptably clean. Use safe, brief ventilation rather than leaving an opening exposed during a dust event. Never block a required exit window to improve sealing.
The HVAC system makes unusual noise after a filter change
Turn the system off if necessary and check whether the new filter matches the equipment’s specified size and resistance. Ask an HVAC technician about compatibility before using a higher-MERV filter again.
The purifier is too noisy to run
Use the published noise rating when selecting a replacement, place the unit on a stable surface away from walls, and use a lower setting that occupants will keep running. A quieter unit operating consistently can be more useful than a louder unit that is frequently switched off.
A practical room-by-room plan
Bedroom
Keep the window closed during elevated outdoor pollution, place a correctly sized cleaner with clear airflow, and run it before bedtime and throughout occupancy at a tolerable setting. Keep the emergency exit usable.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Living room or home office
Use the room’s full area when checking CADR, account for a ceiling higher than 8 feet, and avoid positioning the unit behind seating or curtains. Close the exterior door promptly after entry.
Kitchen and utility areas
Do not assume a purifier can offset indoor sources such as cooking or combustion. Use the appropriate exhaust or source-control method for those activities, and keep road-facing windows closed when outdoor pollution is high.
Whole home
Combine window and door control with compatible HVAC filtration. Add portable cleaners to the rooms with the greatest occupancy or the weakest HVAC coverage rather than assuming one unit will treat every space.
Bottom-line decision
For nearby road construction, closing windows is the first defense against new outdoor particles; a properly sized portable HEPA cleaner is the follow-up defense for particles already indoors. Use both when conditions warrant, add compatible MERV 13-or-higher HVAC filtration when the system allows it, and address settled dust with damp cleaning. Treat CADR as a particle-capacity measure, not a gas-removal guarantee, avoid ozone-generating devices, and preserve clean-air ventilation and emergency egress. The best choice for a particular home depends on outdoor concentrations, leakage, room size, equipment compatibility and how the construction is operated.
