Before leaving, check the road authority responsible for every road on your route. Review its live incidents, planned works and full-closure notices for your exact travel time, then check again shortly before departure. If the road is closed and an official diversion is signed, follow that signed route and the closure notice rather than automatically accepting a different navigation-app route.
Closure and diversion are not the same thing
A temporary road closure means that a road or defined section is unavailable to through traffic for a stated period or under stated conditions. The restriction may apply to one carriageway, a direction, a lane group or the whole road, so the headline alone is not enough.

A diversion is the route traffic is directed to use around that restriction. It is a response to a closure or other restriction, not a description of the road that is blocked. The closure notice tells you what is unavailable; signs and the authority’s instructions tell you how traffic should proceed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsOfficial listings can also describe traffic management that is less severe than a full closure. For example, Traffic Scotland distinguishes lane closures, portable traffic lights and road closures in its incident and roadworks information. National Highways’ closure report for England is specifically about planned full closures on the strategic road network. Check the traffic-management description, location, direction and times instead of treating every mention of “roadworks” as a complete shutdown.

Conditions can include access for residents, works vehicles or emergency services, but those exceptions are notice-specific. Use the relevant notice and on-road signs as the authority for what you may do.
The checks to complete before you leave
- Map the route and identify who manages each road. Note the motorway, A road, trunk road or local road you expect to use. A route can cross several jurisdictions and road operators, so one website may not cover the whole journey.
- Open the responsible authority’s live information. Look for current incidents, emergency roadworks, collisions, congestion and major-incident alerts that could already be affecting the route.
- Check planned works and full-closure notices. Match the notice to your travel date, departure time, road number, junction or landmark, carriageway and direction.
- Look for work that starts the previous evening. An early-morning journey can be inside a closure that began overnight, even if the trip is scheduled for the next calendar day.
- Read the traffic-management detail. Establish whether the notice describes a full closure, lane restrictions, contraflow, temporary traffic lights or another arrangement.
- Record the official diversion instruction. If signs or the notice provide a signed diversion, use that route when the closure is active.
- Recheck close to departure. Planned schedules can change and live incidents can be added after an earlier check.
Match the notice to your direction and time
A closure on the opposite carriageway may not affect your journey, while a restriction that appears to be at the same junction may apply only to a particular slip road or direction. Compare the notice’s start and end times with your planned crossing time, not merely your departure time. If a listing says work runs overnight, check the individual entry for the precise window rather than assuming every overnight closure has identical hours.
Check the last update, but do not treat it as a guarantee
The National Highways road closure report states that it is updated twice daily from Monday to Friday, excluding bank holidays and weekends, and warns that information is correct at publication but may change at short notice. That cadence describes the report, not a promise that every road condition changes only at those update times. Use the report for planned information and check live travel updates again immediately before setting off.
Which service to use in the United Kingdom
There is no single worldwide closure database, and UK services are divided by jurisdiction and road responsibility. Use the service that covers the road you will actually drive.
| Journey area | Primary information source | What it provides | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| England: motorways and major A roads | GOV.UK traffic information and the linked National Highways services | Guidance on finding current traffic information and planned roadworks for major roads | It is not a substitute for checking local-road authorities when your route leaves the strategic network. |
| England: strategic-road planned closures | National Highways road closure report | Planned full closures, with dates, times and location details | The report can change at short notice and its stated update schedule excludes weekends and bank holidays. |
| England: live disruption | National Highways travel updates | Current disruptions, traffic news and major-incident travel alerts | Use the live service alongside planned-works information; one does not replace the other. |
| Scotland: trunk roads | Traffic Scotland route planner | Current incidents, congestion, roadworks, weather warnings and future planned roadworks through map layers | It is a Scottish regional service. Do not assume it covers roads outside its remit. |
| Wales: major roads | The Welsh service linked from GOV.UK traffic information | Major-road information for Wales | Check the responsible authority for local roads and for any section outside the major-road network. |
For a journey outside the UK, use the relevant national or regional road authority. In New Zealand, for example, NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi’s Plan your journey service provides travel times, incidents, roadworks and regional traffic updates, with alerts, traffic bulletins and a 24/7 phone line for state-highway information. That is an international example, not a service for UK commuters.

How to check an English motorway or A-road journey
1. Start with the government traffic-information page
Open GOV.UK’s “Get traffic information to plan your journey”. Use its directions to reach National Highways information for motorways and A roads in England. If your route crosses Scotland or Wales, follow the links to the relevant regional service rather than assuming the English service continues to apply.
2. Review live disruptions
Open National Highways travel updates and search or scan for the road number, junction, town or incident location. Note whether the entry is an emergency incident, congestion, roadworks, a lane restriction or a full closure. A live incident can affect a journey even when no planned closure was scheduled.

3. Check the planned full-closure report
Open the National Highways road closure report. Compare the listed road, location, direction, start time and end time with your intended journey. Keep the report’s freshness warning in mind: its entries are published information that may change at short notice.
4. Check for an overnight start
If you leave before or around dawn, inspect the previous evening’s start times. National Highways specifically warns that an early journey can be affected by a closure that began the night before. Do not infer that a road is open simply because your travel date is later than the date on which works began.
5. Read the diversion instructions
When a closure has an official diversion, identify where the signed route begins and whether the notice gives vehicle, access or direction-specific instructions. Once you are on the road, follow the temporary signs and any instructions from traffic-management staff or police.

How to check a Scottish route
Traffic Scotland’s trunk-road traffic updates and route planner provides a regional view of current incidents, congestion and planned work. Its map layers include live traffic, current incidents, roadworks, weather warnings and future planned roadworks.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Enter or identify the route and destination in the planner.
- Turn on the live-traffic and current-incident layers.
- Turn on roadworks and future-planned-roadworks layers when planning a later trip.
- Check the incident’s road, direction, location and traffic-management type.
- Reopen the service close to departure because the planned picture can change.
If your journey includes local roads or crosses into another nation, identify those road managers separately. A regional trunk-road map is not evidence that every connecting road is clear.
How to choose between route options
When two routes are available, compare them in a fixed order so a navigation app’s fastest estimate does not override a formal closure instruction.
| Question | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Is the road actually open? | Full closure versus lane closure, traffic lights, contraflow or another restriction | A roadworks headline can conceal a restriction that still permits passage, or a full closure that does not. |
| Does the timing overlap? | Notice start and end times, including work that starts the previous evening | Your crossing time, not just your departure date, determines whether the restriction applies. |
| Does the direction match? | Carriageway, lane, slip road and travel direction | A restriction may apply only to one side or one movement at a junction. |
| Is the information authoritative and fresh? | Responsible road authority, last update and any short-notice warning | Official information is the best source for a volatile closure, but even planned entries can change. |
| Is a signed diversion active? | Official signs and the closure notice’s route instructions | A planned diversion may account for local capacity and emergency access in ways a generic app route does not. |
If an alternative route is open and no official diversion is active, compare the authority’s information for that route as well. Check every road you would add, not just the first blocked segment.
Why you should follow a signed diversion
National Highways’ driver guidance for the A3 Hindhead tunnel explains that its diversion routes are planned for expected traffic volumes and agreed with local authorities and emergency services. The same guidance says: “We carefully plan diversion routes to ensure they can cope with the high traffic levels and agree them with local authorities and the emergency services.”

That project-specific guidance also says: “We know that long diversions are frustrating but ask you to resist taking another route, for example as suggested by your sat nav.” The warning is about the A3 Hindhead tunnel closure and should not be turned into a universal claim that every navigation app is wrong. It does establish the practical priority when an official signed diversion is operating: follow the temporary signs and the authority’s instructions unless an authorised person directs you otherwise.
A navigation app may continue to calculate a route through a closed section, use a road unsuitable for the traffic volume, or omit temporary restrictions. Treat it as a supplementary planning tool, not as permission to ignore signs. If signs conflict with an old route displayed on a device, the active traffic-management signs and official instructions take precedence.

Planned full closure
This is a scheduled restriction, often associated with maintenance, construction or inspections. It should have a stated location and time window, but the schedule remains subject to change. Check the planned-closure listing near departure and look for updates.
Live incident or emergency roadworks
A collision, vehicle fire, infrastructure problem or urgent repair can close or restrict a road without appearing in an earlier planned-works search. Use the authority’s live travel or incident service immediately before travel, especially after severe weather or a reported crash.
Lane closure or managed traffic
Lane closures, portable traffic lights, contraflows and other traffic-management measures may leave the road passable while reducing capacity and increasing journey time. Read the direction and location details to determine whether you can still use the route and whether a delay is likely.

Access-specific restrictions
A notice may distinguish through traffic from local access, residents, deliveries or emergency vehicles. Do not assume that a local-access exception applies to your journey. Follow the wording of the notice and any site signs.
A practical departure checklist
- Route: I have listed every motorway, A road, trunk road and significant local-road connection on my route.
- Authority: I know which road authority covers each section.
- Live status: I checked current incidents, congestion and emergency works.
- Planned status: I checked planned works and full-closure notices for my date and time.
- Timing: I checked the previous evening for overnight work affecting an early departure.
- Direction: I matched the notice to my carriageway, lane, slip road and direction.
- Restriction type: I confirmed whether the entry is a full closure, lane restriction, temporary signals or another traffic-management measure.
- Freshness: I rechecked shortly before leaving and noted any short-notice warning.
- Diversion: I know where the signed diversion begins and will follow it if the closure is active.
- Contingency: If I need another route, I will check the authority’s information for that route before committing to it.
What to do when the information conflicts
The app says open, but the signs say closed
Follow the road signs and traffic-control instructions. A device may have stale map data or may not yet have incorporated a live restriction. Once safely stopped, refresh the responsible authority’s information rather than attempting to pass the closure.
The planned notice says closed, but no barrier is visible
Do not assume the schedule has been cancelled. Check the latest authority update and obey any temporary signs or personnel at the location. A closure can begin later in the stated window, be staged by direction or be implemented beyond the first approach point.
Two authorities show different information
Confirm that they refer to the same road, direction, date and traffic-management type. Then give priority to the authority responsible for that road and to the most recent live instruction. If the journey crosses jurisdictions, each authority may be describing a different section.
A diversion appears unsuitable for your vehicle
Stop before entering the restriction and seek instructions from the road operator, police or traffic-management staff. Do not substitute an unverified route simply because it appears shorter. Any vehicle-specific limitation must come from the relevant notice or on-road direction.
Information limits commuters should understand
Closure information is time-sensitive. A report updated twice daily on weekdays cannot guarantee that a collision, weather event or emergency closure occurring afterward is already listed. Conversely, a planned entry is not proof that the road will remain closed for every minute of the published window if the authority changes the work plan.
Services also have different coverage. National Highways’ information concerns England’s strategic roads; Traffic Scotland’s planner is a Scottish regional service; and local authorities may control connecting streets. A clear status on one service does not establish the status of an unconnected road managed by somebody else.
