What happened in the Daegu building?
At about 10:16 a.m. local time on October 10, ceiling finishing materials fell in a second-floor commercial space in a four-story building in Gwaneum-dong, Buk-gu, Daegu. The space was hosting a sales event for kitchenware and household goods aimed at older adults. Yonhap News Agency and the Associated Press reported that 38 people were injured and 66 evacuated.

Reports describe a ceiling-finish failure: the Associated Press called it a plaster-ceiling collapse, while Yonhap and local coverage described ceiling finishing materials or the suspended ceiling falling. They do not report that the building’s concrete frame collapsed.

Daegu police formed a 33-member dedicated investigation team, including personnel from serious-accident investigation, forensic science and victim-protection units. Yonhap reported that the team planned to work with the National Forensic Service and other agencies.

A joint inspection took place on October 11. Investigators reviewed CCTV footage and fallen debris to identify where the ceiling gave way. Newsis reported that the ceiling had three layers of finishing. Police were examining whether loading, structural defects, aging, installation or safety measures contributed.
A local official raised deterioration of wires or other supports as one possibility. That has not been established as the cause. Daegu Metropolitan Police Agency science-investigation chief Park Myeong-ho said, in an English translation of remarks reported by Newsis, “We will analyze whether it fell because of the load, a structural defect, or aging after a detailed examination.”

Have police found management negligence or filed charges?
