Choose a platform-bed plan that matches your mattress size and the support requirements from its manufacturer before buying lumber. Plans differ in dimensions, cut lists, slat and center-support layouts, joinery, and instructions; there is no universal platform-bed cut list or slat-spacing rule.

What a useful platform-bed plan should tell you

Before committing to materials, check that the plan gives you enough information to lay out the build and assemble it. A useful plan may include overall dimensions, a size-specific shopping list, a cut list, diagrams, hardware details, and a clear assembly sequence. For example, Kreg’s Platform Bed plan includes a detailed parts list and staged directions, while Ana White’s Modern Platform Bed Frame provides lists for different mattress sizes.

  • Mattress size and finished dimensions: Confirm the plan names your mattress size and gives dimensions for the frame.
  • Support layout: Look for the specified slats, side cleats, center rail, and any center legs. Do not assume a support arrangement from another design will work with this one.
  • Materials and cuts: Check lumber dimensions and quantities against the plan’s list before purchasing.
  • Joinery and hardware: Note whether the design calls for pocket holes, particular screws, or bed-rail connectors.
  • Instruction format: Distinguish a step-by-step build guide from drawings and lists that require you to work out the assembly yourself.

Compare the plans without mixing their specifications

These examples illustrate different ways to approach the build. Their cut lists and support details belong to their respective designs; do not combine them as if they were interchangeable.

Plan Size and lists Support and construction details Instruction format
Kreg: Platform Bed Specific pine-board materials and a cut list; use the plan’s own quantities. Rail cleats, eight slats, and a center-support assembly. Calls for pocket-hole screws, flat-head wood screws, and bed-rail connector bolts and nuts. Detailed parts list and staged assembly directions.
Ana White: Modern Platform Bed Frame, all sizes Separate shopping and cut lists for mattress sizes, with metric measurements. Select the list that matches your mattress. The twin list explicitly says that version does not need a center-support system. Follow the selected size’s plan rather than scaling another list casually. Size-specific plan page and lists.
Ana White: Essential Platform Bed Frame Lists materials for its own dimensional-lumber design, including furring strips for slats. Describes a build using a drill and saw. Do not assume its materials or support details match the other Ana White design. Plan article; consult its directions for the exact build.
Wilbur Davis Studios paid bed plan Listing describes detailed drawings and cut and hardware lists; check the current listing for availability and contents. Details depend on the specific plan. The listing explicitly says it is not a step-by-step instruction set.

Check mattress support before deciding slat spacing

Ask the mattress manufacturer what support its product requires, including any spacing limits for slats or need for a particular foundation. The plans above do not establish a universal maximum slat gap, warranty condition, or load rating. A dimension suggested in a forum post is not a verified standard. If the mattress maker’s requirements differ from a plan’s layout, resolve that conflict before cutting or assembling the frame.

Follow the chosen plan’s build sequence

Use the instructions and parts list for one design from start to finish. The order below is a planning checklist, not a substitute for the plan’s specific measurements and assembly directions.

  1. Choose the mattress-size version. Match the plan’s list to the mattress; do not scale a different size by guesswork.
  2. Verify the support requirements. Check the mattress maker’s current guidance and compare it with the selected plan’s slats and supports.
  3. Inventory the cut list and hardware. Confirm board sizes, quantities, fasteners, and connectors listed for that design.
  4. Prepare the specified joinery. For Kreg’s plan, that includes drilling pocket holes and assembling its center support as directed. Other plans may use a different approach.
  5. Assemble the frame and supports as shown. Kreg’s directions attach the rails with connector hardware and place slats on the cleats and center support. Follow another plan’s own sequence and layout instead.

What the plans do not establish

The cited plan pages do not establish a tested load capacity or safety rating for every build, nor do they provide a universal slat-gap rule or mattress-warranty requirement. Do not treat a plan’s presence of a center rail, a particular number of slats, or a suggested forum dimension as proof of a rated capacity. For a strength claim, look for verifiable engineering evidence for the specific design and materials.
