A pin-and-crescent joint is a machine-made drawer joint in which rounded pins fit into scalloped, crescent-shaped recesses. It was popular in Victorian-era furniture, when factory machinery made it possible to produce drawers much faster than by cutting dovetails by hand. The joint is also called a pin-and-scallop, pin-and-cove, scallop-and-dowel, or Knapp joint.

What is a pin-and-crescent joint?

The joint connects drawer sides to the front with a repeating pattern of pins and curved recesses. Its distinctive scalloped profile is different from the angled tails of a conventional dovetail. The names vary, but they refer to this same recognizable type of drawer construction. WOOD Magazine lists pin-and-scallop, pin-and-cove, and scallop-and-dowel as alternate names, and explains that “Knapp joint” comes from the Knapp Dovetailing Co., which made machines for producing it.

When and why was it used?

The Knapp Dovetailing Co. of Northampton, Massachusetts, began producing pin-and-crescent joint machines in 1871. WOOD Magazine says the joint became widespread among furniture companies for nearly 30 years. It offered a factory-made alternative to labor-intensive hand-cut dovetails; WOOD Magazine says manufacturers could suddenly make 10 times more drawers, though it does not identify an independent study or measurement method for that figure.

The joint later fell out of favor as furniture preferences changed and machines were developed to mass-produce dovetails with the appearance of hand-cut work. Its presence can help identify a period style of drawer construction, but the joint alone does not establish who made a particular piece or its exact date.

Can you make a pin-and-crescent joint today?

Yes, the joint can be duplicated with a router and templates. WOOD Magazine describes that approach, and the Woodworker’s Journal issue archive lists a 1995 article titled “The Pin and Crescent Joint,” using a jig and router.

A historical patent also describes a bench-top jig with a template to guide a router and drill. It is evidence of a jig design, not evidence that a compatible jig is currently sold. The patent record describes the joint as decorative and strong while noting that making it by hand is difficult and time-consuming.

Is a compatible jig available to buy?

Current availability of a compatible pin-and-crescent jig is not established. A generic router-joint jig or template may not cut the required geometry. Before buying one, confirm that the manufacturer or seller explicitly identifies pin-and-crescent, pin-and-scallop, or Knapp-joint capability and explains how the router and drill are guided.

How it differs from a dovetail

Feature Pin-and-crescent Dovetail
Shape Rounded pins mate with crescent-shaped recesses. WOOD Magazine describes the historical alternative as dovetails; it does not provide a detailed profile comparison in its article.
Historical production Victorian-era, machine-made drawer joint associated with the Knapp company’s production beginning in 1871. Hand-cut dovetails were the labor-intensive method the machine-made joint was intended to replace; later machines could mass-produce dovetails that looked hand-cut.
Production speed WOOD Magazine says factories could make 10 times more drawers, without specifying an independent test or measurement method. Hand-cut dovetails are characterized by WOOD Magazine as time-consuming; no comparable modern production measurement is stated.
Modern making method Router and templates are documented; present-day compatible jig availability is not established. Not stated in the cited sources.
Strength comparison A historical patent describes it as strong, but no modern comparative test is stated. Not stated in the cited sources.
