Plastering Machine vs. Mortar Sprayer: Which Is Right for Your Project?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Short answer: “Plastering machine” and “mortar sprayer” are overlapping trade labels, not two universally standardized machine categories. Some plastering machines mix dry material with water and pump it; some mortar sprayers receive material from a separate mixer; others use a hopper and pump for prepared material. Choose by the actual machine’s mixing arrangement, compatible material and grain size, pump, power supply, delivery rating, pressure, hose route, nozzle and cleaning requirements—not by the product name alone.

Start by identifying the material you must apply and the site’s available power and access. Then verify that a specific machine and nozzle are approved for that material. Manufacturer ratings are useful for comparing models, but they are not guarantees of daily output, labor savings or total project cost.

Why the two names are easy to confuse

In construction equipment catalogs, “plastering machine” often describes a complete system that prepares and conveys plaster. “Mortar sprayer” usually emphasizes projection of mortar through a hose and spray gun. In practice, the same machine can be marketed with both descriptions.

A machine’s name does not tell you where mixing occurs, which materials its pump can handle, or whether the quoted delivery rate is realistic for your mix and hose route. Two products carrying the same label can have different pumps, electrical requirements and nozzle systems. Conversely, a plastering machine and a mortar sprayer may use the same basic screw-pump principle.

A typical integrated plastering workflow

An integrated system may combine a mixer, water addition, pump and controls. Dry material is prepared in the machine, then conveyed through a material hose to the application point. This arrangement can reduce manual transfers, but it requires a reliable water supply, suitable electrical service and a machine designed for the particular mix.

A typical prepared-mortar workflow

Another arrangement uses a separate mixer or manually prepared batch. The mixed material is loaded into a hopper, where a pump drives it through the material hose to a spray gun or lance. The machine may be sold as a mortar sprayer even though it does not perform the initial mixing. Crew members must therefore plan batching, consistency checks and steady hopper loading upstream of the pump.

Why the label is not a specification

The useful questions are mechanical: How does material reach the pump? What particle size is permitted? Which pressure range and hose diameter are approved? What power and water connections are required? What nozzle and air supply are needed? The answers determine whether the equipment is suitable for your substrate and production plan.

Begin with the material, not the machine

Compatibility is the first screening test. Identify the exact plaster, mortar, render, bonding coat, decorative coating or other building material, then obtain its mixing instructions and maximum aggregate or grain size. A pump can move a material in theory yet fail in service if the consistency, aggregate size or setting behavior is outside the manufacturer’s limits.

Check consistency and permitted grain size

Ask the machine supplier for the approved viscosity or consistency range and maximum particle size. Compare that with the material supplier’s instructions. A small nozzle and pump may be intended for fine plaster, while a coarser mortar needs a larger material passage and a different rotor-stator or worm-drive setup. Never infer compatibility from the word “mortar” in a listing.

Confirm whether mixing is integrated

Determine whether the machine mixes dry material and water, accepts premixed material, or expects a separate mixer. An integrated mixer changes the site layout and crew roles. A hopper-and-pump system shifts responsibility to the person batching material and keeping the hopper supplied at a consistent rate. If the machine requires premixed material, include the mixer, loading space and washout area in the plan.

Match the application and finish

Spraying is a placement method, not a guarantee of a finished surface. The substrate, coat thickness, texture and follow-up finishing determine the result. Confirm that the machine, spray gun and nozzle are intended for the coat you plan to apply, and establish whether the surface will be ruled, floated, troweled or otherwise finished after spraying.

Specification What to verify Why it matters on site
Mix workflow Integrated mixer, separate mixer, or premixed material fed to a hopper Determines batching, water supply, crew tasks and required footprint.
Material fit Approved plaster or mortar types, consistency range, maximum grain size and nozzle Controls whether material can pass through the pump and spray evenly without blockage.
Power and services Voltage, phase, current, water connection and any compressed-air requirement Prevents an unusable machine at a site with inadequate electrical or water service.
Delivery and pressure Rated litres per minute, operating or maximum pressure and adjustment range Helps compare capacity with the required distance and material, while recognizing that ratings are model tests rather than guaranteed job output.
Hose route and reach Approved hose length, vertical and horizontal run, bends and access to the work face Long or restrictive routes increase resistance and can make a nominal rating impractical.
Hopper and loading Hopper capacity, loading height and whether continuous feeding is possible Affects batching rhythm, lifting effort and the number of people needed to keep spraying continuous.
Application hardware Spray gun or lance, air hose, material hose, nozzle sizes and controls Hardware must match the material and desired spray pattern; accessories are not universally interchangeable.
Cleaning and wear parts Flushing procedure, cleaning balls, rotor-stator or worm parts and replacement intervals in the manual Incomplete cleaning can set material in the system and turn a routine shutdown into a repair.

What real manufacturer examples show

The following examples illustrate why labels cannot substitute for specifications. Their figures are manufacturer claims for particular models, not independent head-to-head evidence or category-wide benchmarks.

Example Configuration and published ratings What the example demonstrates
TEKKÖK PME-40 MAX Described as a traditional mortar spraying machine with output control. Manually mixed plaster is loaded from a mixer to a pump, then conveyed through a hose. The page lists 380 V, 50 Hz power, 45 L/min delivery, 0–7 mm ideal grain size, 10 mm maximum grain size and 40 bar maximum pressure. A product sold as a mortar sprayer can rely on a separate mixer and still have explicit grain-size, pressure and electrical limits. The 45 L/min figure is a model rating, not a guaranteed rate for every mix or hose route.
HAMA Duo Power 2.0 Described as a 230 V worm-drive plastering machine with 5–8 litres per minute delivery and adjustable 0–60 bar pressure. Listed applications include plaster, coloured plaster, decorative coatings, quartz paint, bonding agents and non-textured primer; the page also lists skim coat and water-based paints after conversion. A machine marketed for plastering may handle several coating categories, but conversion and accessory requirements matter. Its lower published delivery range cannot be compared directly with another model’s maximum without matching material and test conditions.
WAGNER spray-lance system The explanation describes a screw pump with feed helix, rotor-stator, mortar hose, spray lance and nozzle. Compressed air atomizes material at the lance; materials that are not atomized may not need additional compressed air. Air can be part of the spray-lance process rather than the material-pumping mechanism. Whether air is required depends on the material and the described system.
DERUTU PC18 The page lists cement mortar, gypsum, concrete and other building materials, and names a high-pressure material hose, air hose, spray gun, nozzle and cleaning ball as components. A listed component set is model-specific. Confirm the current configuration and instructions before assuming every item is included or compatible with another machine.
Putzmeister plastering accessories The accessories catalog includes plaster spray guns and material nozzles. Spray guns and nozzles are application-dependent accessory types. Fit, passage size and connection must be checked against the machine and material.

A practical selection process

  1. Write down the material and coat. Record the product name, mixing method, intended substrate, coat thickness and finish. Obtain the material’s permitted grain size and consistency requirements.
  2. Decide where mixing will happen. Choose an integrated mixer only if the site can supply its water and power and the crew benefits from that workflow. If batching is already organized, a hopper-and-pump system may fit better. Verify that the pump accepts the prepared material without additional screening or conversion.
  3. Audit the power supply. Check voltage, phase, current capacity and connector type at the actual worksite. For example, the PME-40 MAX listing specifies 380 V, 50 Hz, while the Duo Power 2.0 listing specifies 230 V. Those requirements are not interchangeable.
  4. Measure the hose route. Measure the run from machine to spray point, including vertical lift, horizontal distance and bends. Compare it with the manufacturer’s approved hose length and pressure guidance. A short route on paper can become restrictive when it includes several tight bends or a narrow hose.
  5. Match pump, nozzle and air. Confirm the pump type, material passage, nozzle size and whether the spray lance needs compressed air for atomization. Do not substitute a generic nozzle or gun solely because its connector appears similar.
  6. Check loading and crew rhythm. Compare hopper capacity and loading height with the batch size and available labor. A high delivery rating is useful only if material can be mixed, moved and loaded at the same pace.
  7. Plan cleaning before the first batch. Identify water access, drain or washout arrangements, cleaning balls and the manufacturer’s shutdown sequence. Ask which wear parts must be inspected after use and how quickly material can set in the hose.
  8. Request a written compatibility confirmation. Give both the machine supplier and material supplier the exact model, mix and grain size. Keep their written limits with the site documents, especially when using a coating after a machine conversion.

How the two workflows affect a crew

Integrated mixing and pumping

This workflow can reduce the number of separate transfers between mixer and pump. It also concentrates the controls, water dosing and pump feed in one machine. The trade-offs are a larger service requirement and less flexibility if the material is supplied only as a ready-mixed batch. Operators still need to monitor consistency and prevent interruptions that leave material in the pump or hose.

Separate mixing with hopper loading

A separate mixer can be useful when batching is already established or when the material must be mixed in a particular sequence. It requires a reliable handoff: the mixer must deliver material at a rate the hopper and pump can accept, and someone must watch for segregation, drying or contamination. The machine operator should not be expected to leave the spray point repeatedly to manage batching.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Spray-lance operation

A spray lance combines material flow with the nozzle and, where required, compressed-air atomization. The operator controls distance, angle and movement while a second person manages material supply and pump settings. The correct pattern depends on the material, nozzle and pressure; changing one component can alter spray behavior and overspray.

Setup, spraying and shutdown checklist

Use the model’s manual for the exact sequence, but plan the work around these checks:

  • Place the machine on a stable, accessible surface with room for hoses, loading and cleaning.
  • Connect the specified electrical, water and air services; protect cables and hoses from traffic and sharp edges.
  • Install only the approved material hose, spray gun, lance and nozzle combination.
  • Prepare the material to the supplier’s specified consistency and remove contamination or oversized particles before they reach the pump.
  • Prime or wet the system only as the manufacturer directs. Do not improvise additives or dilution to cure a blockage.
  • Begin at a conservative setting, observe the spray pattern and adjust pressure, delivery and air within the permitted range.
  • Keep the spray path clear and coordinate signals between the operator, pump controller and material-loading crew.
  • At interruptions, follow the manual’s procedure for relieving pressure and preventing material from setting in the hose.
  • When finished, stop the pump safely, isolate power and pressure, flush the material path and use the specified cleaning ball or tools.
  • Inspect the rotor-stator, worm drive, seals, hose and nozzle for wear before the next shift.

Common selection and operating mistakes

Buying by the headline delivery rate

Rated litres per minute are not a project guarantee. Actual flow changes with material consistency, grain size, hose length, elevation, bends, nozzle and pressure setting. Compare ratings only after confirming that the models are being discussed under comparable conditions.

Assuming “mortar” covers every mortar

Cement mortar, gypsum, concrete-containing mixes and decorative coatings can have different pump and nozzle requirements. The PC18 page lists several material categories, but that list does not prove that every formulation within those categories is suitable. Obtain model-specific limits for your exact product.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring the electrical service

A 380 V machine cannot simply be treated as a larger version of a 230 V machine at a site wired for domestic single-phase supply. Verify phase, current, protection and connection before delivery.

Using an unverified accessory

Spray guns, nozzles, air hoses and cleaning balls may look interchangeable while having different passages, seals or connections. Match every accessory to the machine manual and material requirement.

Leaving cleaning until the next day

Residual plaster or mortar can harden in the hose, pump or nozzle. Cleaning is part of the operating cycle, not optional housekeeping. If the site cannot support immediate flushing and safe washout, select a workflow that accounts for that limitation or change the schedule.

Speed, cost and productivity: what can—and cannot—be concluded

Mechanical ratings alone do not establish which label is faster or cheaper. There is no independent head-to-head statistic here showing that plastering machines universally outperform mortar sprayers, or vice versa. A model’s nominal delivery rate does not include batching labor, hose setup, nozzle changes, access delays, finishing or cleanup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a project estimate, compare the complete system: machine and accessories, mixer if separate, electrical or water provisions, material handling, operators, wear parts, cleaning time and contingency for blockages. A lower-rated machine that matches the material and site may produce a better result than a higher-rated model that needs unsuitable power or constant stoppages. Treat manufacturer output and pressure figures as selection data, not as a promised daily quantity.

Decision guide by project condition

Choose an integrated plastering workflow when

  • The material supplier permits machine mixing and the site can provide the required water and electrical service.
  • You want mixing and pumping coordinated in one setup and have operators trained on that model.
  • The machine’s approved grain size, pump and nozzle match the specified coat.

Choose a prepared-material mortar-spraying workflow when

  • Your material is already mixed in a separate process or must follow a batching method outside the spray machine.
  • You can maintain a steady hopper supply and have space for the mixer, loading and washout.
  • The pump, hose and spray gun are rated for the material’s consistency and particle size.

Pause the purchase and clarify the specification when

  • The seller cannot state the maximum grain size or compatible material categories.
  • The required voltage, phase, current or compressed-air need is missing.
  • The quoted hose reach does not account for your vertical lift and bends.
  • Included nozzles, guns or cleaning components are unclear.
  • The supplier presents a delivery number without conditions or a material reference.

Questions to put on the quotation

Ask the supplier to identify the exact model and configuration, not just “plastering machine” or “mortar sprayer.” Request the approved material list, consistency range, maximum grain size, pump type, nozzle and hose specifications, voltage and phase, current, water and air requirements, delivery and pressure ratings, permitted hose route, hopper capacity, included accessories, cleaning procedure and wear-part availability. Ask whether the quoted output is a maximum, an adjustable range or a test value, and under what material conditions it was measured.

Send the same information to the material manufacturer. Compatibility is a joint decision: the equipment supplier knows the pump and passage limits, while the material supplier knows the mix behavior and application requirements.

Bottom line for your project

Do not choose between the words “plastering machine” and “mortar sprayer.” Choose the machine-and-material combination that fits your mix, particle size, power, hose route, nozzle, crew and cleanup plan. Some systems mix and pump; others depend on a separate mixer or prepared material. Verify every limit in the current machine instructions and material documentation, and treat published delivery and pressure figures as model-specific ratings rather than guaranteed jobsite performance.
