A butterfly-friendly yard needs more than colorful flowers: adult butterflies need nectar, while caterpillars need host plants, and many larvae can feed on only a few plant species. Choose plants suited to your ecoregion, site conditions, and the butterflies you hope to support; this list offers examples to investigate, not a universal ranking or planting prescription.
Before buying, check local native-plant guidance and consult a native plant nursery or garden center. Pollinator Partnership offers ecoregional planting guides and a location-based plant-selection tool.
How to Choose Butterfly-Friendly Plants
Start by separating plants that feed adult butterflies from plants that serve as caterpillar hosts. A bed of nectar flowers may attract adults, but it does not by itself show that the planting supports the butterfly life cycle. Include locally appropriate host plants as well as nectar sources.
- Check regional fit. Look up your ecoregion and confirm whether a plant is native and suitable where you live.
- Identify its role. Find out whether it supplies nectar, hosts caterpillars, or does both for locally occurring species.
- Plan for bloom timing. Compare bloom periods to help provide nectar across the growing season.
- Match the site. Check the plant’s light, soil-moisture, and space requirements against your yard.
- Ask local experts. Native plant nurseries, garden centers, and local native-plant organizations can help you choose suitable species and seed sources.

Butterfly Host Plants: Why They Matter
A host plant is a plant that caterpillars use for food. Many butterfly and moth larvae feed on only one or a few plant species, so a plant that attracts adult butterflies may not support their caterpillars.
