Plant breeding is the intentional development or improvement of plants to bring useful traits into a variety. It can help farmers and communities pursue better production, quality, nutrition, and resilience to pests, disease, or environmental stress—but no trait guarantees the same result in every crop, location, or season.

What is plant breeding?

Plant breeding is the human-aided development of plant varieties with desired characteristics. USDA describes it as developing plant materials with needed traits, while USDA’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) frames it as maximizing plants’ positive genetic traits. It is an overall improvement process, not one particular technique.

Breeders work with variation among plants: they identify individuals or populations with useful characteristics, then select and propagate or cross them so those characteristics can be carried forward. The goal may be a variety suited to a particular crop, growing environment, management practice, or community need. USDA’s plant-breeding overview describes an improvement cycle involving evaluation of traits and selection.

How do breeders develop improved varieties?

Methods range from selecting desirable plants and saving their seed to planned crosses and the use of genetic or genomic tools. The choice depends on the crop, the trait being pursued, and the conditions where the variety must perform; there is no universally best method.

Burpee SuperSeed 36-Cell Reusable Seed Starting Tray for Indoor Seedlings
  • EASIER SEED STARTING: Our Burpee SuperSeed tray with 36 flexible pop-out cells is designed to simplify indoor seed starting for all your favorite vegetables, flowers and herbs. Just add seed starting mix, seeds, water and light to get growing! Rows are labeled alphanumerically for seedling identification with included Plant-o-Gram diagram. Tray dimensions: 11.5" x 10-3/8" x 2-1/4"
  • SMARTER WATERING SYSTEM: Molded corner slots in each cell improve drainage and soil aeration to set your seeds up for germination success. Deep channels in the watering tray draw excess away from the cells, while the raised perimeter edge keeps water contained in the tray - no spills! Seed tray side handles make it easy to lift and pour off excess water or check seedlings daily.
  • SIMPLER TRANSPLANTING: Soft food-grade silicone cells cradle seedlings and gently flex to pop out when it’s time to transplant into your outdoor garden! This system is specially designed to reduce stress on your seedlings, so you don't damage their roots. After transplanting, trays are easy to clean and reuse or simply store for next growing season. Top shelf dishwasher safe.
  • SEED STARTER TIP: Many favorite vegetables, including peppers and tomatoes, must be started indoors before warmer weather arrives. Start pepper seeds 8-10 weeks before your area’s average last frost date, and tomato seeds 6-8 weeks before last frost. Check your Burpee seed packets for instructions on when and how to plant any of your herb, flower and vegetable seeds.
  • 100% GUARANTEED: Burpee is committed to the success of all gardeners. We treat each order with care to ensure healthy seeds, plants, soil mixes and gardening supplies are packaged and sent in excellent condition. If you are unsatisfied with your purchase, we aim to make it right!
  • Selection and propagation: Growers or breeders choose plants with desired characteristics and carry them forward through seed or other propagation.
  • Crossing: Breeders cross plants to combine useful traits, then select among the resulting plants.
  • Molecular and genomic tools: Genetics, genomics, and marker-assisted selection can help identify plants carrying traits of interest. These tools support selection; they are not a synonym for genetic engineering.
  • Transgenic approaches: These are one biotechnology tool used in some crop development, not the definition of plant breeding as a whole.

As USDA NIFA explains, “Plant breeding — the science of maximizing plants’ positive genetic traits to produce desirable effects — continues to open new frontiers in agricultural production.” Its plant biotechnology overview discusses molecular tools and transgenic approaches alongside broader plant-improvement work.

What traits can plant breeding target?

Breeding programs may seek traits that address practical production or community needs. Examples include:

  • Higher production per unit of land.
  • Resistance to particular pests or pathogens.
  • Adaptation to drought or other environmental stresses.
  • Improved crop quality or nutritional characteristics.

These are breeding aims, not guaranteed outcomes. A variety’s performance depends on its genetics, local growing conditions, management, and the specific pest, disease, or stress it encounters. USDA NIFA describes production and resistance goals on its plant breeding page.

How can plant breeding benefit people?

More production potential

A variety that performs well in a particular setting may produce more per unit of area. FAO identifies higher-performing varieties as one possible contribution to production. Whether a farmer benefits depends on local conditions and the variety’s fit.

Resilience to pests, disease, and stress

Breeders can select for resistance to specific pests or pathogens and for adaptation to drought or other environmental stresses. Such traits may help reduce crop losses, but they do not make plants invulnerable or remove the need for sound crop management.

Quality and nutrition

Breeding can target characteristics important to consumers and producers, including crop quality and nutrition. USDA identifies nutrition security and plant quality among public breeding priorities.

Miracle-Gro Indoor Potting Mix for Seed Starting, 8 qt. (2-Pack)
  • Miracle-Gro Indoor Potting Mix for Seed Starting grows stronger roots for seeding success (vs unfed when used as directed)
  • This lightweight potting mix is enriched with plant food and designed to be less prone to fungus gnats (contains no compost or bark, which are known to shelter to fungus gnats)
  • This seed starting mix is excellent for germinating vegetable, flower, and herb seeds, and also for starting leaf, stem, and root cuttings
  • Apply this ready-to-use potting medium to cell trays or containers; keep mix moist and out of direct sunlight until seeds germinate
  • Bundle comes with 2 bags of Miracle-Gro Indoor Potting Mix for Seed Starting; each 8 qt. bag fills three 72-cell seeding trays (exact amounts may vary)

Possible reductions in pesticide use

FAO’s climate-change resource notes that pest-resistant varieties may require fewer pesticides. That is a potential benefit, not a universal result: it depends on the crop, the pest, the variety, and how the crop is managed.

Why does local fit matter?

A useful variety must suit the place and purpose for which it is grown. Growing environment, available management, producer priorities, consumer needs, and whether suitable seed can reach growers all affect whether a breeding result is useful in practice. USDA’s plant-breeding overview emphasizes methods responsive to producer and community needs.

That is why a variety that performs well in one setting should not automatically be assumed to perform as well elsewhere. Breeding aims and evaluation need to reflect the environments and uses that matter to the people who will grow and rely on the crop.

What are the trade-offs?

Plant improvement and the conservation of genetic diversity need to be considered together. Genetic resources—including local varieties and landraces—can hold traits useful for adaptation and future breeding. The FAO Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture describes genetic erosion as the loss of genes and gene combinations in these resources, and identifies replacement by modern varieties as one main cause.

This does not mean improved varieties inevitably reduce diversity. The outcome depends on farmer choices, seed systems, and whether diverse resources are conserved. Maintaining genetic diversity preserves options for future needs, while breeding can help develop varieties for current ones. The FAO Commission’s plant genetic resources overview explains the role of these resources and the concern about genetic erosion.

What plant breeding cannot promise

Breeding is one contribution to agricultural production and adaptation, not a stand-alone solution to food security or climate change. A target trait may not deliver the same benefit across environments, and a resistant variety may address a particular pest or pathogen without addressing every production challenge. Outcomes also depend on conservation, crop management, and effective seed systems.
