The AllPeopleQuilt Pinwheel Pot Holder is a pieced-fabric project that finishes at 10½ inches square, with a 10-inch finished pinwheel block. Its pattern combines cotton-print triangles with cotton and insulated batting, then secures a fabric hanging loop in the binding. These are construction specifications, not a tested heat-protection rating.
Which Pinwheel Pot Holder pattern is this?
This article covers the quilted pattern by the American Patchwork & Quilting Editors, published by AllPeopleQuilt on April 30, 2021. The finished project measures 10½ inches square, and its finished pinwheel block measures 10 inches square. See the AllPeopleQuilt pattern.
A separate crochet pattern with the same name, by Carolyn Christmas, was originally published in November 1990. It uses worsted-weight yarn and a size H hook, so it is a different project—not the pieced-fabric pattern described here. View the crochet pattern listing on Ravelry.
Materials and cut pieces
The quilted pattern uses cotton prints for the block, backing, hanging loop, and binding. Prepare the following pieces:

- One 6¼-inch square of gray print and one 6¼-inch square of red print; cut each square twice diagonally to make four triangles of each fabric.
- Two 6-inch aqua squares; cut each in half diagonally to make four large triangles.
- One 10½-inch aqua-print square for the backing.
- One 10½-inch square of cotton batting and one 10½-inch square of insulated batting, such as Insul-Bright.
- Three 2½-by-21-inch strips for the binding.
- One 2-by-5-inch strip for the hanging loop.
Insul-Bright is an example named in the pattern, not the only brand specified. The pattern calls for an insulated batting layer alongside cotton batting; it does not compare products or state performance ratings.
How to piece and assemble the pot holder
Build the pinwheel block
- Pair one small gray triangle with one small red triangle, then add one large aqua triangle to form a pieced unit.
- Trim the unit to 5½ inches square, including seam allowances. Repeat to make four units.
- Sew the units into pairs, then join the pairs to form the pinwheel block.
Layer, quilt, and bind
- Place the aqua-print backing face down. Layer the insulated batting, cotton batting, and pinwheel block on top, with the block facing up.
- Baste the layers and quilt as desired.
- Fold and stitch the 2-by-5-inch strip to form the hanging loop. Position its raw edges against the back edge of the project.
- Bind the quilted unit, catching the loop’s raw edges in the binding seam.
What the pattern does—and does not—say about heat protection
The pattern specifies materials and assembly, including an insulated batting layer, but gives no tested temperature rating, certification, maximum temperature, or comparison among insulation products. The finished pot holder therefore has no documented heat-protection performance in the pattern. Do not treat the listed materials or finished dimensions as a burn-protection guarantee. AllPeopleQuilt’s broader pot holder pattern collection likewise should not be read as a product-performance test for this project.
