The most meaningful way to walk Pienza is to treat it as a connected landscape rather than a single Renaissance monument. The route associated with the ASLA 2017 student-award project links Pieve di Corsignano, an archaeological quarry, Piazza Dante Alighieri and Pienza’s old city. Its stated ambition is to balance historic conservation, everyday public life and tourism development.
That makes “editing” a useful way to understand the project: selecting and interpreting a sequence of paths so that different historical periods become legible while the walk remains useful to residents and visitors. The documented project description does not establish specific construction details, authors, drawings or built outcomes, so the route and design discussion below stays within what the available sources support.

What “editing” means in Pienza
In a historic town, a walking route is never just a line between attractions. It determines what a visitor notices, how long people remain in a place, which streets receive foot traffic and whether the surrounding landscape is understood as part of the town’s history. Editing a percorso means arranging those relationships deliberately: a start point, a sequence of evidence, pauses for interpretation and a clear transition between urban streets and rural paths.
The ASLA award description presents the Pienza project as a “hermeneutic landscape approach.” In practical terms, that is an interpretive approach: the path should help people read layers of meaning in the terrain instead of treating monuments as isolated objects. The stated sequence—Pieve di Corsignano, an archaeological quarry, Piazza Dante Alighieri and the old city—moves across archaeological, medieval and Renaissance settings. It also places conservation beside ordinary public life and tourism, rather than assuming that visitor access is the only measure of success.

Because the award-page project entry could not be opened, no claim can be made here about its built interventions, detailed plans, project team or measured results. The defensible lesson is the route-design question itself: how can a walk connect evidence across time without overwhelming the small town that has to support it?
The historical layers a route needs to reveal
Prehistory and archaeology
The Municipality of Pienza’s tourism history account reports evidence of a Neolithic village at Cava Barbieri, dated there to the sixth–fifth millennium BC. It also notes Etruscan evidence in the surrounding area, including at the Cretaiole farm. These references make the quarry more than a scenic detour: it is a place where the landscape records occupation before the medieval town existed.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe Ministry of Culture gives the museum story a longer frame, extending from prehistory through late Roman settlement, medieval Corsignano and the transformation into Renaissance Pienza. A route that begins or pauses at an archaeological site can therefore establish that the Renaissance plan was one chapter in a much older inhabited landscape.
Roman and medieval Corsignano
The municipal history account describes Corsignano’s Roman street structure as a cardo and decumanus, corresponding approximately to today’s Via Guglielmo Marconi and Corso Rossellino. Later, Corsignano became the medieval settlement associated with the Parish Church of Corsignano. Connecting that church to the centre lets walkers see the town’s predecessor rather than encountering Pienza as a self-contained hilltop composition.
Renaissance Pienza
Pienza’s modern identity comes from its fifteenth-century redesign under Pope Pius II Piccolomini. The municipal tourism portal says Via delle Case Nuove was commissioned in 1464 as a social-housing example. In the central ensemble, Piazza Pio II brings together the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, Palazzo Piccolomini, the Palazzi dei Cardinali and the Town Hall; the Diocesan Museum occupies Palazzo Borgia.

An interpretive publication dates the Cathedral’s design to 1462 and identifies Bernardo Rossellino as its architect. It also reproduces a sentence from The Commentaries of Pius II (IX, 24): “Due to necessity [the church] contrary to habit, extends from the north towards the south.” The bracketed wording is part of that publication’s English rendering and should remain attributed to the Commentaries rather than presented as a modern description.

The Municipality of Pienza tourism portal describes an art-and-architecture itinerary that can be used as the practical backbone for a historical walk. Distances and durations below are the portal’s estimates, not an independent survey.
- Start at Via delle Case Nuove. Use the street’s 1464 social-housing history to introduce the idea that Pienza’s Renaissance transformation included civic and residential life, not only monumental façades.
- Continue to the Church of San Carlo Borromeo. The portal estimates roughly 200 metres between the starting point and this church. This short opening leg keeps the walk within the town while moving from a residential example to a religious building.
- Follow Via del Bacio and Via dell’Amore. These streets lead toward the panoramic walls at Via del Casello. The portal estimates about 400 metres to the panoramic section.
- Pause at the walls and return toward Piazza Pio II. The return leg is estimated at about 300 metres. The elevated streets make the relationship between the compact centre and the Val d’Orcia landscape visible before the route enters its principal monument ensemble.
- Read the Piazza Pio II ensemble. The Cathedral, Palazzo Piccolomini and the Palazzi dei Cardinali form the centre of the historic composition. The Town Hall and Diocesan Museum at Palazzo Borgia add civic and cultural functions to the same square.
- Continue to San Francesco. The church marks the route’s move away from the central square and toward the older settlement landscape.
- Walk toward Gozzante and the Parish Church of Corsignano. The portal estimates approximately 1.2 kilometres from San Francesco to the parish church. This is the key historical transition from Renaissance Pienza to medieval Corsignano and its Roman antecedents.
- Choose the landscape extension. The described extension continues about 1.5 kilometres from Corsignano to the Path of Art and Soul through the woods of Porciano, then onward to the Medieval Tower of Favolello and a sculpture called the Guardian of the Valley.
Including visits and pauses, the portal estimates the complete itinerary at about 5.5 kilometres and four to five hours. Actual time depends on opening hours, walking pace, weather and the amount of interpretation provided at each stop.
Short centre walk or full landscape itinerary?
The municipal portal also describes a shorter two- to three-hour stroll that stays around Pienza’s historic streets. The comparison is useful when choosing a route for different visitors or different conservation pressures.
| Option | Estimated time | Places and character | Surface and setting |
|---|---|---|---|
| Historic-centre stroll | 2–3 hours | Porta al Prato, Corso Rossellino, Piazza Pio II, the walls, Via del Bacio, Via dell’Amore, Via della Fortuna and Via Santa Caterina | Primarily town streets and monument approaches |
| Extended historical landscape route | About 4–5 hours including stops | Via delle Case Nuove, San Carlo Borromeo, panoramic walls, Piazza Pio II, San Francesco, Gozzante, Parish Church of Corsignano and the possible Path of Art and Soul extension | Cobbled streets plus unpaved paths, with a transition into the surrounding landscape |
The shorter option suits a limited visit or a group that needs frequent access to central services. The longer route better expresses the project’s central idea because it connects the old city with Corsignano, archaeological context and contemporary landscape installations. The sources do not provide a full accessibility assessment or a current report on path conditions, so neither route should be advertised as universally accessible without a current local check.

Planning the walk responsibly
Allow for surfaces and weather
The tourism portal recommends comfortable shoes for cobbled streets and unpaved paths. Footwear with secure grip is a practical response to the route’s two different surfaces, especially where the walk leaves the centre. Rain, heat and seasonal vegetation can change comfort and footing; current conditions should be checked locally before setting out.
Time the central visits
The portal suggests a morning-to-early-afternoon visit for the quality of light. It also notes that some stops, including Palazzo Piccolomini, have seasonal opening hours. Check current opening times, admission arrangements and any temporary closures before fixing a group itinerary. The four- to five-hour estimate includes visits and pauses, so a day planned around interior access needs more flexibility than a continuous walk.
Decide where to turn back
A route editor should identify a clear return point at the centre and another at Corsignano. Visitors who choose the two- to three-hour town walk can experience the core streets and walls without committing to the 1.2-kilometre approach to the parish church. Those continuing can treat Corsignano as the historical destination or add the 1.5-kilometre Path of Art and Soul extension if time, weather and path conditions allow.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why conservation and public life belong in the same route
The Municipality reports that Pienza received UNESCO recognition in 1996 and the Val d’Orcia in 2004. Such recognition increases the importance of protecting buildings, streetscapes and landscape relationships, but it does not turn the town into a museum without residents. The municipal history account explicitly identifies the challenge of balancing increasing guests with a small resident population and protecting basic services.
A walk designed around that reality should distribute attention rather than concentrate every visitor in one square. Starting at Via delle Case Nuove acknowledges housing and everyday use. Moving through the central ensemble explains the Renaissance plan. Continuing to Corsignano and the surrounding paths spreads the historical story geographically, while the route’s pauses can direct people without requiring intrusive new construction.

This is a planning principle, not evidence that the ASLA student project achieved a particular visitor pattern or solved tourism pressure. The documented project goal is to balance conservation, local public life and tourism development; its actual outcomes are not established by the available award description.
How to interpret each stop without overbuilding
A strong interpretation sequence can use a consistent set of questions at every pause:
- What period is visible? Identify the archaeological, Roman, medieval or Renaissance layer without implying that one period erased the others.
- What survives physically? Point to a street alignment, wall, church, quarry, tower or view that the walker can actually see.
- What changed? Explain how later development reused, redirected or recontextualised the earlier landscape.
- Who uses this place now? Distinguish resident services, worship, museum visits, tourism and landscape recreation.
- What should remain protected? Connect the stop to the care of fabric, views, archaeological evidence and ordinary public access.
At Piazza Pio II, for example, the interpretation can connect the Cathedral’s 1462 design, Rossellino’s role and the square’s civic buildings without reducing the place to an architectural catalogue. At Corsignano, the Roman street framework, medieval parish and route through the landscape can be presented as a continuous history rather than separate attractions.

The available ASLA search result establishes the project title, its student-award context and the stated trail sequence and objectives. It does not establish the designers’ names, a construction programme, materials, signage system, accessibility upgrades, visitor counts, economic effects or post-completion evaluation. Those details should not be supplied by assumption.
Likewise, the municipal distances are planning estimates. They are useful for choosing between a centre walk and a longer outing, but they are not a field-tested navigation track. Access, opening hours, path conditions and route details can change, so a current municipal check is essential close to the day of travel.
A practical checklist for a walkable-history brief
- Define whether the intended audience needs the two- to three-hour centre stroll or the approximately 5.5-kilometre extended itinerary.
- List every stop in sequence, including the point where walkers can return from Corsignano.
- Separate confirmed historical evidence from interpretive framing and label each clearly.
- Check current opening hours for Palazzo Piccolomini and other interiors before publishing times.
- Describe cobbled and unpaved surfaces and advise suitable footwear.
- Confirm current route conditions, wayfinding and any temporary restrictions.
- Keep resident access and basic services visible in the route plan, not as an afterthought.
- Do not claim accessibility, visitor impact or project outcomes without current evidence.
Read this way, Pienza’s historical percorsi become an editing problem with a concrete public purpose: connect archaeological, medieval and Renaissance evidence; make the landscape intelligible; and let visitors move through a living town without treating it as a backdrop.
