Passivent Aircool is a configurable façade-ventilation system for commercial buildings, not a single off-the-shelf fan. Its motorised, insulated dampers can regulate air intake or extract in natural-ventilation schemes and can also serve mechanical systems. The range is used for controlled ventilation and, where the design permits, night cooling that removes heat stored in the building fabric after occupancy.
Choosing a suitable Aircool variant requires coordination of airflow, acoustic exposure, façade construction, wall depth, heating, controls and the project’s comfort criteria. The figures commonly quoted for the wall unit come from Passivent’s PVCTI8 Issue 2 specification, dated March 2025, and describe particular configurations and test conditions rather than guaranteed performance in every installed building.

What is a Passivent Aircool ventilator?
A Passivent Aircool ventilator is a controllable opening installed in an external wall, curtain wall or compatible window profile. Electrically actuated dampers open and close to manage outdoor-air intake or room-air extract. The insulated assembly is intended to form part of a coordinated building ventilation strategy, with controls deciding when and how far it opens.
In a natural-ventilation design, Aircool units can provide controlled façade openings for supply and extract paths. In a mechanical system, the same type of opening can be used as an intake or discharge component where the project’s air-pressure and distribution design allows it. Passivent also identifies night cooling as a use: when outdoor conditions are favourable, the system can purge heat accumulated in floors, walls and other fabric during the day.

The family is configurable. Standard, acoustic, thermal and fan-assisted hybrid versions add different functions; they are not interchangeable upgrades. The correct selection depends on the ventilation concept, external noise, the need to temper incoming air, the heating system and the control sequence.
Which Aircool variant fits the project?
| Variant | What it adds | Question to resolve before specification |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Aircool | Motorised insulated dampers for controlled intake or extract. Passivent describes it for natural or mechanical ventilation and for night cooling. | Is controllable façade ventilation sufficient, without extra acoustic treatment or air-heating functions? |
| Acoustic Aircool | Acoustic liners plus one or two rows of internal acoustic chevrons. Passivent presents it for façades exposed to higher external noise. | What sound reduction is required at the occupied space, and what airflow or pressure penalty applies to the selected size and chevron arrangement? |
| Thermal Aircool | A low-resistance airflow heater coil connected to the building’s central heating circuit. An integral sensor reports incoming-air temperature so water flow and temperature can be regulated through third-party controls. | Is tempering outdoor air needed, and have the heating circuit, valve arrangement, sensor and control logic been designed together? |
| Hybrid Plus2 Aircool | Combines Aircool functions with a fan-assisted air-tempering and mixing unit. Passivent describes passive, cooling and mixing modes, with operation based on internal and external conditions. | Does the room need fan assistance or mixing to meet comfort and ventilation criteria in changing conditions? Confirm the control philosophy and design limits. |
| Thermal Hybrid Aircool | Similar to Hybrid Plus2, but with a room-side outlet containing an inline heater and two additional heating modes, according to Passivent. | How will the additional heat function fit the room’s primary heating strategy, and which controls will coordinate it with ventilation? |
For an acoustic selection, request test data for the actual opening size and baffle option. A generic sound-reduction value cannot be transferred safely between configurations. Likewise, a thermal or hybrid unit should be assessed as part of the building’s complete heating and ventilation sequence rather than treated as a standalone heater.
What should be checked before sizing an Aircool unit?
1. Define the ventilation strategy and duty
Set out whether each opening is for supply, extract or a mode that changes with operating conditions. Establish design airflow, pressure assumptions, occupancy periods and the circumstances in which night cooling is enabled. Map the complete air path, including opposite-side openings, shafts, internal transfer routes and any mechanical fans. Aircool is one component; its opening area and control response must support the calculated system duty.
2. Allow for free area and airflow resistance
Passivent’s March 2025 wall specification states a free ventilation area of 24–44%, depending on product size. The nominal opening therefore is not the same as the effective airflow area. Use the selected unit’s free area, discharge coefficient and pressure relationship in the project calculation. Acoustic chevrons, screens and other internal components can alter resistance, so do not use the standard configuration’s assumptions for an acoustic or hybrid product.

3. Check structural opening and wall depth
PVCTI8 Issue 2 gives a stated wall-unit structural opening range of 255–1,490 mm high and 400–3,000 mm long, with a maximum stated area of 3 m² and a maximum height of 1,490 mm. The minimum wall depth is listed as 195 mm with an internal cover grille and 185 mm without one. These are specification limits, not permission to omit a design check. Coordinate the actual unit dimensions with the structural opening, insulation build-up, cavity barriers, interior finish and the façade manufacturer’s details.
4. Confirm the façade construction
Passivent describes the range as suitable for different wall constructions, curtain walling and window profiles, but the interface is project-specific. Identify the exact façade system, mullion or panel geometry, sleeve arrangement, weathering details and internal grille location. The wall specification describes extruded-aluminium external components, an insect screen, an internal cover grille and an aluminium wall sleeve. Confirm that these elements fit the proposed build-up and that any required flashings, seals and access provisions are included in the façade package.

Locate the external noise sources and set the internal criterion for the occupied room. Then select standard or acoustic Aircool and obtain data for the chosen opening dimensions and one- or two-row chevron configuration. More acoustic treatment can change pressure loss and available airflow; the design team must check both the noise target and the ventilation duty instead of optimising one in isolation.
6. Decide whether incoming air needs tempering
If cold outdoor air could cause discomfort or conflict with the heating strategy, assess Thermal Aircool or a thermal hybrid. Thermal Aircool uses a low-resistance water heater coil connected to central heating, with an integral incoming-air temperature sensor. Verify available flow and return temperatures, valve and pump capacity, frost or low-temperature protection required by the project, sensor location and the sequence that prevents heating and cooling commands from fighting each other. The product documentation identifies third-party controls for regulating water flow and temperature; compatibility must be confirmed for the selected equipment.

7. Design the actuator and controls
The March 2025 wall specification identifies a 24 V modulating actuator with a 0–10 V signal. Put the actuator power supply, signal source, fail position, feedback requirements and commissioning points on the controls drawings. Define how internal and external temperature, air-quality strategy, wind or rain interlocks and time schedules will affect operation only when those functions are part of the project design. Hybrid products have additional modes, so agree the sequence with the controls contractor before ordering. Confirm the exact actuator and accessory arrangement for the chosen variant; do not assume that a control package for one Aircool configuration applies to another.
Published technical figures: what they mean
The following values are stated in Passivent’s PVCTI8 wall specification, Issue 2, March 2025. They describe the specified vertical wall-mounted configuration where noted. They are manufacturer figures, not independent measurements of an occupied building.

|---|---|
| Thermal transmittance with blades closed | U-value 0.86 W/m²K for the vertical wall-mounted configuration. |
| Rain rejection at external louvres | 98.6%, independently tested at BSRIA using BS EN 13030:2001. |
| Closed-ventilator air leakage | 9.7 m³/hour/m² at 50 Pa; 0.54 m³/hour/m² at 2 Pa. |
| Discharge coefficient with internal cover grille | 0.42 for inflow and 0.44 for outflow. |
| Free ventilation area | 24–44%, depending on product size. |
| Structural opening range | 255–1,490 mm high and 400–3,000 mm long; maximum stated area 3 m² and maximum stated height 1,490 mm. |
| Minimum wall depth | 195 mm with an internal cover grille; 185 mm without one. |
| Actuator | 24 V modulating actuator with a 0–10 V signal, as identified in the specification. |
Do not generalise these wall-product measurements to window, acoustic, thermal, Hybrid Plus2 or Thermal Hybrid configurations. Product size, grille or baffle arrangement, installation position and test method all affect the result. The rain-rejection figure, for example, is tied to the stated BSRIA test and BS EN 13030:2001 method; it is not a blanket guarantee for every façade detail. Validate the selected product and installation against the project’s weather, thermal, acoustic and airflow requirements.
How to take an Aircool project from concept to order
- Document the brief. Record building use, occupied zones, ventilation mode, design airflow, night-cooling intent, acoustic criteria and comfort limits.
- Mark the façade locations. Coordinate each opening with structural grids, wall or curtain-wall build-up, insulation, cavity barriers, internal finishes and access for installation and maintenance.
- Shortlist the variant. Start with Standard Aircool, then add acoustic, thermal or hybrid functions only when the design duty requires them.
- Calculate effective airflow. Use the selected size’s free area, discharge coefficient and pressure data. Include the resistance of acoustic chevrons, screens, grilles and any connected duct or fan system.
- Coordinate heating and controls. For thermal products, confirm water-system capacity and sensor strategy. For all products, show the 24 V supply, 0–10 V modulation, control panel interfaces, operating modes and interlocks.
- Check compliance evidence. Request the current data for the exact configuration, including acoustic results where relevant, rather than relying on a value from a different size or variant.
- Obtain project calculations. Passivent says its technical team can assist with bulk airflow calculations and thermal modelling. Use that support to test the selected arrangement against the building model and then record the agreed unit schedule.
- Commission by mode. Test closed and modulating positions, intake and extract direction, night-cooling schedules, temperature response, heating-valve operation and any fan-assisted modes. Record measured settings and hand them to the facilities team.
Common specification mistakes and their fixes
- Treating Aircool as a universal product: Fix this by scheduling the exact variant, size, opening dimensions, grille or baffle arrangement and actuator for every location.
- Using nominal dimensions as airflow area: Apply the published free-area range and configuration-specific pressure data to the airflow calculation.
- Copying standard-unit data to acoustic or hybrid units: Obtain evidence for the selected product, because liners, chevrons, fans and heaters change resistance and performance.
- Leaving the façade interface until site: Resolve wall depth, sleeve, grille, insect screen, weathering and interior finishes in the façade and services drawings.
- Ordering a thermal unit without a heating-control sequence: Confirm water temperatures, valve control, sensor wiring and operating priorities with the mechanical and controls designers.
- Assuming a published figure predicts indoor air quality: Aircool can support a ventilation strategy, but the product literature does not establish a guaranteed health outcome. Indoor conditions depend on the whole system, controls, occupancy and commissioning.
- Ignoring evidence dates and test conditions: Cite PVCTI8 Issue 2, March 2025, alongside the values and re-check the current documentation at procurement.
What Aircool can—and cannot—say about healthy internal environments
Controlled façade openings can help a project deliver planned outdoor-air supply, extract and night cooling when they are correctly sized, positioned and controlled. The acoustic, thermal and hybrid options address particular constraints that might otherwise limit the usable ventilation strategy.

That does not mean an Aircool ventilator alone guarantees a healthy indoor environment. The outcome also depends on the building’s air paths, occupancy, contaminant sources, filtration or mechanical equipment where used, weather response, control settings and commissioning. Treat the ventilator as a coordinated building-system component and verify the completed design against the project’s indoor-air, thermal-comfort and acoustic criteria.
When to involve Passivent’s technical team
Early technical coordination is worthwhile when a project has many façade openings, mixed wall constructions, significant external noise, unusual opening sizes, thermal-air tempering or hybrid operating modes. Passivent states that its team can help with bulk airflow calculations and thermal modelling. Give the team the actual façade build-up, opening schedule, airflow duties, acoustic targets, heating data and control intent so the response addresses the installed configuration rather than a generic product description.
