Philips Hue’s New Automation Tool Has Arrived: Here’s What You Need to Know

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Philips Hue’s new automation update mainly changes how you find and manage routines—it does not replace Hue’s existing automation system. On supported Bridge-based setups, automations now appear inside the Rooms and Zones they control, alongside lights, scenes, and accessories. You can manage them there while still using the dedicated Automations tab for a complete, home-wide list.

The feature works with both the standard Philips Hue Bridge v2 and Hue Bridge Pro. You do not need Bridge Pro simply to use the new Room and Zone automation view.

What is Philips Hue’s new automation tool?

The update gives Hue automations a more useful context. Instead of finding every routine only in one global list, you can open a Room or Zone—such as the bedroom, kitchen, or hallway—and see the automations that affect that space.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For example, a bedroom wake-up routine can appear in the bedroom view, while a motion-triggered hallway routine can be managed from the hallway’s Room or Zone screen. Depending on how your Home is organised, an automation affecting several areas may be associated with multiple relevant spaces or a broader Bridge-level grouping.

  • CONTROL USING YOUR VOICE: Connect to your home assistant, and you’ll be able to control your LED light bulbs remotely using voice commands—compatible with Alexa, Google Assistant, and Apple Home.
  • EXPAND YOUR SETUP: Add a Hue Bridge and other Hue products to unlock more features, including home security and content syncing with music, movies, and video games

Signify describes the contextual interface as supporting the creation, editing, deletion, enabling, disabling, manual starting, and manual stopping of automations. Starting an automation manually does not create a new trigger; it runs an existing routine immediately.

What changed in the Hue app?

  • Automations appear in Rooms and Zones: routines are shown near the lights, scenes, and accessories they control.
  • More direct controls: you can manage a routine without first navigating to the global automation list.
  • Customisable layouts: Hue has described the ability to reorder sections within Rooms and Zones, helping you put automations, scenes, accessories, or lights where they are most useful.
  • The global list remains: the dedicated Automations tab has not been removed and remains the best place to audit routines across the entire Home.

This is primarily a usability and organisation improvement. It does not, by itself, introduce an unrestricted rule engine, unlimited conditional logic, or universal control of every smart-home device.

Which Hue Bridges support the feature?

The Room and Zone automation update is intended for systems using either the Hue Bridge v2 or Hue Bridge Pro. Early-2026 rollout reporting associated the feature with Bridge firmware versions 1975104000 for Bridge v2 and 2071193000 for Bridge Pro. See the rollout coverage from TechRadar for those reported version numbers.

Availability can vary by platform, country, account, and staged rollout. iOS and Android may show slightly different labels or receive changes at different times. Bluetooth-only users should not assume they receive the complete Bridge-based feature set: the official app listing warns that some Hue features require a Philips Hue Bridge.

How to find and use the new automation view

  1. Open the Philips Hue app.
  2. Confirm that you are viewing the correct Home and Bridge.
  3. Open the relevant Room or Zone.
  4. Look for the Automations section alongside lights, scenes, and accessories.
  5. Select an automation to edit, enable, disable, start, stop, or delete it, where those controls are available in your app version.

Use the dedicated Automations tab when you want to see the complete list of routines across the Home, check for duplicates, or inspect an automation that is not obvious from a particular Room or Zone.

To create a routine, use the automation control in the relevant Room or Zone or open the dedicated Automations area. Menu names can change between app versions. As of Hue app version 5.70, Philips Hue renamed Custom automation to Lighting schedule; the release notes say the behaviour remained the same. Check the Hue iOS release notes for current terminology and platform changes.

What types of automation can Hue handle?

The update surfaces existing Hue capabilities rather than replacing them. Depending on your devices, app version, and setup, Hue supports routines such as:

  • wake-up routines that gradually increase brightness;
  • go-to-sleep routines;
  • Coming home and Leaving home automations;
  • timers;
  • motion-sensor triggers;
  • fixed-time schedules;
  • sunrise and sunset schedules, including offsets;
  • accessory-triggered behaviours; and
  • preset colour or behaviour cycles.

Many routines can also specify what happens at the end—for example, whether lights turn off after the automation. Coming-home and leaving-home behaviour can depend on multiple household members and phone-location settings. Hue’s release documentation describes multi-user geofencing designed to account for whether someone else is already home.

Can Hue’s AI assistant create automations?

Yes, but the AI assistant is a separate feature from the Room and Zone automation layout. Philips Hue says the assistant can recommend or generate scenes, control lights, and create automations from typed or recorded natural-language requests. Newer app versions can provide access from Rooms and Zones screens. Language and availability vary; it launched in English and later added Spanish, German, and Dutch support according to Hue’s release information.

Example requests include:

  • “Turn on the bedroom lights gradually at 6:45 every day except Wednesday.”
  • “At sunset, turn on the porch lights and turn them off at midnight.”
  • “Start a warm, dim scene in the living room at 8 p.m. on weekdays.”
  • “Turn on the hallway lights when motion is detected after sunset.”

These are natural-language examples, not guaranteed command syntax. Always review the generated automation before saving it. Check its target Room or Zone, trigger, days, start time, fade behaviour, and end condition. If the result is wrong, edit it manually or recreate it with more explicit wording.

What the update cannot do

It should not be treated as a complete replacement for Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings, or Home Assistant. The Hue app remains focused on Hue lighting and supported accessories. It does not necessarily provide:

  • perfect one-to-one recreation of every former Hue Labs formula.

Hue Labs closed on June 25, 2024. Philips Hue says many formulas were moved into the official app as standard features or scenes, but former users should not assume that every experimental behaviour has an identical modern equivalent. See the Hue Labs support article for the company’s guidance.

New automation view vs AI assistant vs SpatialAware

Feature What it does Qualification
Room and Zone automation view Shows routines where they apply and allows contextual management. Supported Bridge-based setup, current app and firmware; works with Bridge v2 and Bridge Pro.
Dedicated Automations tab Shows the home-wide list of automations. Remains available.
Hue AI assistant Creates scenes and automations from typed or recorded requests. App, language, account, and rollout availability may vary.
Hue SpatialAware Uses room layout and light-position information to distribute scene colours across a space. A separate Bridge Pro feature, not an automation tool.
Hue Labs Former platform for experimental formulas. Closed June 25, 2024.

Signify’s announcement discussed several product improvements in the same broader update, which is why these features can be confused. SpatialAware is designed to scan a room with a smartphone or tablet camera and distribute scene colours according to the room and light positions. It is separate from automation management, and its availability should be checked in the current app.

Do you need Bridge Pro?

No—not for the new contextual automation view alone. Existing Hue owners with a standard Bridge v2 should update the app and Bridge before considering new hardware.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Already own a Hue Bridge: update first; buying Bridge Pro solely for this interface improvement is difficult to justify.
  • Building a new Hue system: a standard Bridge is the sensible choice if you want dependable Hue automation without requiring Pro-specific capabilities.
  • Considering Bridge Pro: choose it for capabilities such as SpatialAware or other Pro features that matter to you, not because the Room and Zone automation view requires it.
  • Need complex cross-brand logic: evaluate Home Assistant or a major smart-home platform instead of assuming more Hue hardware will provide that flexibility.

Home Assistant is considerably more flexible for cross-brand devices and advanced conditions, but it is also more involved to configure and maintain. Third-party platforms can broaden automation options, while introducing additional dependencies and the possibility of duplicate or conflicting rules.

Troubleshooting common problems

The automation appears in the wrong Room or Zone

Open the global Automations tab and inspect the routine’s targets. It may control a Zone rather than a Room, affect multiple spaces, or refer to an area that was renamed or reorganised. Confirm that the relevant lights and accessories are assigned correctly, then force-close and reopen the app.

The automation is missing

Check that you are signed into the correct Hue account, Home, and Bridge. Confirm that the Bridge is online and that both the app and Bridge firmware are current. If you use Bluetooth-only control, the automation may depend on Bridge functionality that your setup does not have. Also check whether the missing routine was a discontinued Hue Labs formula rather than a native Hue automation.

The automation runs at the wrong time

Inspect fixed-time settings, sunrise or sunset selection, offsets, selected days, time-zone and location settings, fade-in durations, and delays. Another automation or platform may also be controlling the same lights, causing an apparent timing error.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Coming Home or Leaving Home is unreliable

Review location permission, background-app permission, battery restrictions, mobile-data or Wi-Fi connectivity, and the presence of other household members. Hue’s multi-user geofencing can intentionally prevent a Coming home or Leaving home routine from behaving like a single-person setup. Also look for conflicting routines in Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings, or Home Assistant.

The AI-created automation is wrong

  1. Open the generated routine.
  2. Check its Room or Zone.
  3. Verify the trigger, schedule, days, fade, and end condition.
  4. Edit it manually where possible.
  5. Delete and recreate it with a more precise request if necessary.

Do not rely on an AI-generated routine for safety-critical or security-sensitive assumptions without checking exactly what it will do.

Bottom line

Philips Hue’s new automation tool is a worthwhile quality-of-life improvement for homes with several Rooms, Zones, sensors, and schedules. Its main achievement is putting routines alongside the spaces they control, while preserving the full Automations tab for whole-home management.

It is not a new universal automation language, and it is not a reason by itself to replace a working Bridge or upgrade to Bridge Pro. Update your Hue app and Bridge first; consider Bridge Pro only if its separate capabilities—particularly SpatialAware—justify the additional hardware.
