Philips Hue did not put motion detectors inside its bulbs. Its September 4, 2025 product refresh introduced Hue MotionAware, a Bridge Pro feature that uses changes in the wireless environment between compatible Hue devices to detect movement. The result can automate lights or trigger alerts, but it is a network-based sensing system—not a replacement for a camera, PIR sensor, mmWave sensor or professionally monitored alarm.
The short version
- Hue Bridge Pro: the required hardware for MotionAware, with capacity for up to 150 lights and 50 accessories.
- MotionAware: uses the Hue network to detect movement without adding a dedicated motion sensor. Signify says more than 95% of Hue lights support it, but that is a manufacturer claim.
- Hue Secure wired video doorbell: offers 2K video, a 180-degree view, night vision, two-way audio and Hue-light integration.
- Hue Essential bulbs: lower-cost bulbs with compromises in brightness, white-light range and some dimming performance.
- Matter over Thread: new-generation bulbs support Matter over Thread alongside Zigbee and Bluetooth, although proprietary Hue features do not automatically transfer to every platform.
- Other additions: new light strips and Festavia Globe outdoor string lights expanded the range.
The Bridge Pro launched in North America at $98.99, but the U.S. Philips Hue shop listed it at $139.99 on pages crawled in August 2026. Launch prices for the doorbell and Smart Chime were $169.99 and $59.99 respectively; current prices can differ.

How MotionAware works
MotionAware analyzes changes in wireless signals created when something moves through the space between compatible Hue devices. The Bridge Pro processes that information and can use the result in Hue automations or security alerts.

MotionAware may be useful for turning lights on when someone enters a room, activating lights as a deterrent while the household is away, or detecting movement in an area where a conventional sensor has no convenient line of sight. It can also work alongside Hue Secure cameras, contact sensors and doorbells.
It should not be confused with camera-based detection. Hue’s security materials describe camera and sensor systems that can identify categories such as people, animals, vehicles and packages. MotionAware should not be assumed to provide the same identification capability. It is also not a substitute for a professionally monitored alarm.
Large open rooms, unusual layouts, radio interference and device placement may affect results. Test any automation before relying on it for security-critical alerts.
What you need for MotionAware
The original Hue Bridge does not unlock MotionAware. A typical setup requires:
- A Hue Bridge Pro.
- Compatible Hue lights positioned in the area to be monitored.
- The current Hue app and compatible device firmware.
- A Hue account and internet connection for remote notifications or cloud-connected security functions.
- A Hue Secure subscription, according to Signify’s September 2025 launch announcement.
That last point deserves attention. Signify tied MotionAware to a Hue Secure subscription in its launch material, while current retail pages do not make the requirement equally prominent. Check the subscription screen, current terms and the in-app paywall before buying. Do not assume that purchasing the Bridge Pro alone provides every MotionAware function.
Existing Hue bulbs generally do not need to be physically replaced for the feature, but compatibility varies by product and configuration. Signify’s announcement is the source for its claim that more than 95% of Hue lights support MotionAware.

Bridge Pro versus the original Hue Bridge
| Feature | Bridge Pro | Original Bridge |
|---|---|---|
| MotionAware | Supported | Not supported |
| Lights | Up to 150 | Lower capacity |
| Accessories | Up to 50 | Lower capacity |
| Processing | Signify says five times more powerful | Baseline hardware |
| Memory | Signify says 15 times more memory | Baseline hardware |
| Scenes | More than 500 custom scenes | Lower capacity |
| Connectivity | Wi-Fi support, including 2.4GHz | More dependent on existing network arrangement |
| Migration | Supports migration from an existing Bridge | Not applicable |
Signify also said support for combining multiple existing Bridges into one Bridge Pro would arrive before the end of 2025. Treat that as a launch commitment unless current Hue support documentation confirms the feature and its present limitations.
The Bridge Pro is therefore more than a MotionAware license key. It is also aimed at households with large Hue installations, many scenes or a need for faster response and more flexible placement. For a small setup used only for schedules and color scenes, its benefits are much less compelling.

Signify announced a North American launch price of $169.99. That is a September 2025 launch MSRP, not a guaranteed September 2026 street price.
The wiring requirement is important
This is not a battery-powered doorbell. Philips Hue specifies a 12–24V AC transformer rated at least 10VA, and the transformer is not included. Homes with existing doorbell wiring should verify the transformer before purchase. A home without suitable wiring may need new electrical work or an electrician, which can erase the apparent price advantage over battery-powered alternatives.
A wired installation is a poor fit for renters, homes where transformer replacement is difficult, or buyers who specifically require battery operation. Also check current platform support if Apple Home or another smart-home ecosystem is a launch requirement; Apple Home support was reported as unavailable at the doorbell’s launch and may have changed since then.
See the doorbell’s power specification.
What the Smart Chime adds
The optional Smart Chime provides an audible alert inside the home, customizable sounds, light-based visual notifications, quiet hours and different tones for different conditions or times. Signify announced a North American launch price of $59.99.
It is most useful when a phone notification is not enough or when the doorbell cannot be heard throughout the house. It is less necessary if an existing indoor chime or smart-speaker announcement already covers that job.
Essential bulbs: a cheaper way into Hue
Hue Essential bulbs are designed to reduce the entry price of the ecosystem. Signify announced North American prices from $24.99 to $59.99 depending on the bulb and pack. U.S. store listings crawled in August 2026 showed an Essential A19 at $24.99, a four-pack at $59.99 and an Essential BR30 at $24.99.
The trade-off is performance. Compared with premium Hue bulbs, Essential products can offer a smaller white-light spectrum, lower brightness and less-deep dimming on some models. The listed Essential BR30, for example, is rated at 650 lumens. Buyers who need maximum output or the broadest white-light control should compare specifications rather than choosing solely by price.
The advantages are ecosystem compatibility and a lower cost for larger installations. Essential bulbs can work with existing Hue controls and accessories, and new-generation models support Zigbee, Bluetooth and Matter over Thread.

What Matter over Thread changes
Matter is the smart-home interoperability standard. Thread is the low-power mesh networking technology used by compatible devices. Matter over Thread can allow supported Hue bulbs to communicate with compatible smart-home controllers without relying on Zigbee through a Hue Bridge.

However, buyers still need a compatible Thread border router and smart-home controller. Matter support does not mean every Hue feature is exposed everywhere. MotionAware, Hue Secure functions, advanced effects and other proprietary features may remain dependent on the Hue Bridge Pro and Hue software.

| Your situation | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Small Hue setup used for schedules and scenes | Keep the original Bridge unless MotionAware or the extra capacity solves a specific problem. |
| Large Hue installation near its device or scene limits | The Bridge Pro is more defensible because its capacity and faster hardware add value beyond sensing. |
| You want sensor-free lighting automation | Consider Bridge Pro and MotionAware, but verify the current Secure subscription requirement and test detection in your rooms. |
| You already own reliable PIR or mmWave sensors | Keep the original Bridge unless you also need higher capacity, Wi-Fi placement or Hue Secure integration. |
| You want a Hue-integrated front-door camera | Choose the doorbell if compatible wiring exists and 2K video, wide coverage and automatic lighting are priorities. |
| You need battery operation | Reconsider the Hue doorbell; it requires wired power. |
| You want advanced AI detection or professional monitoring | Compare established security ecosystems rather than treating Hue Secure as a monitored alarm replacement. |
| You want the lowest-cost Hue expansion | Essential bulbs are the logical starting point, provided their brightness and white-light limits are acceptable. |
Alternatives worth considering
- Dedicated Hue motion sensor: a simpler, conventional approach that avoids the Bridge Pro upgrade, though it adds a visible, battery-powered device. Philips Hue’s U.S. price signal was $48.99 on the cited product material.
- Dedicated PIR or mmWave sensors: often provide more transparent behavior for occupancy automations. They require additional hardware and may introduce another hub or ecosystem.
- Ring doorbells: offer a broader established doorbell and monitoring ecosystem, but do not provide the same native Hue-light integration.
- Google Nest doorbells: suit Google Home households and established camera workflows, while Hue lighting may require separate automation.
- Aqara sensors and cameras: can be attractive for advanced occupancy and automation setups, but add another ecosystem or hub.
Privacy and reliability considerations
MotionAware is appealing partly because it does not require a camera in every room. The Hue Secure doorbell and cameras are different: they collect video, image and audio data and use cloud connectivity for camera and doorbell functions. Review Philips Hue’s data notice before installing security cameras or a doorbell.
For any motion-based automation, begin with low-consequence actions such as hallway lighting. Check for missed detections and false triggers at different times of day, with doors open and closed, and with normal household activity. Do not use an untested Hue automation as the sole protection for a property.
Bottom line
Philips Hue’s 2025 launch was a substantial platform refresh, but “bulbs become motion sensors” is shorthand rather than a literal hardware description. The Bridge Pro turns compatible Hue devices into part of a wireless movement-detection system, while adding more capacity, memory, processing power and Wi-Fi support.
For large Hue households or buyers building around Hue Secure, Bridge Pro is the meaningful upgrade. For a small lighting setup, a dedicated Hue motion sensor—or an existing PIR or mmWave system—may be simpler and cheaper. The Secure doorbell is compelling mainly for homes with compatible wired power and a strong preference for combining entryway video with Hue-light automation.
