Announced by Signify on September 4, 2025, the Essential line keeps Hue app control, Bluetooth setup, voice-control support where available, and compatibility with Hue Bridge systems. The savings come from simplified lighting performance, including a 2% minimum dimming level and lower output on some models.
For U.S. buyers, the Essential A19 and BR30 are currently listed at $24.99 each, while an Essential A19 four-pack is listed at $59.99. Prices, stock, and promotions vary by region and date.

What changed in the 2025 Hue refresh?
Signify’s September 2025 announcement covered more than cheaper bulbs. The broader refresh included:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Hue Essential: lower-priced A19, BR30, GU10, light-strip, and starter-kit products.
- Hue Bridge Pro: a higher-capacity hub with faster processing, more memory, and newer features.
- Revamped light strips: a redesigned strip-light lineup positioned alongside Essential as part of the wider ecosystem update.
It is more accurate to call this a tiered lineup expansion and ecosystem refresh than a complete replacement. The current Hue catalog continues to list Essential and standard Hue products together.

Essential bulb models and U.S. prices
| Model | Socket and shape | Brightness | Light | Minimum dimming | Current U.S. listing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Essential A19 | E26, A19 | Up to 800 lumens | White and color | 2% | $24.99 each; $59.99 four-pack |
| Essential BR30 | E26, BR30 | Up to 650 lumens | White and color | 2% | $24.99 |
| Essential GU10 | GU10 spotlight | Not established in the supplied U.S. listing | Announced as part of the range | Not established | U.S. price not confirmed |
These specifications and prices come from the official U.S. Hue bulb catalog. The launch announcement also included Essential light strips, but U.S. availability and pricing should be checked on the live store rather than inferred from European launch information.
Are Essential bulbs genuinely cheaper?
Yes, at the current listed U.S. prices. An Essential A19 costs $24.99 individually, compared with roughly $54.99 to $59.99 for listed standard Hue A19 models. That makes Essential approximately half the listed price of specific standard models before discounts.
The four-pack is the strongest value: $59.99 total, or about $15 per bulb. That is a manufacturer-listed bundle price, not a guaranteed permanent price or a promise that every retailer will match it.
The comparison is not perfectly like-for-like. Listed standard Hue models can offer up to 810 or 1,100 lumens, dim to 0.2%, and include features such as full-spectrum daylight and Chromasync precision color. Essential is cheaper because it is a simplified performance tier—not because it delivers identical lighting specifications.
What you give up with Essential
Less low-light control
Essential bulbs are listed as dimming to 2%. Current full-featured Hue examples advertise dimming to 0.2%. The difference is most relevant in bedrooms, media rooms, restaurants, and other spaces where a very low, subtle glow matters.

Simplified color and white-light performance
Essential listings use the labels “Essential white light” and “Essential color,” while standard models advertise full-spectrum daylight and Chromasync precision color. That does not establish that Essential colors are poor; it does establish that Signify positions them below the standard range in lighting performance.

Lower brightness in some formats
The Essential BR30 is listed at up to 650 lumens. That may be sufficient for accent lighting or a smaller room, but buyers should not assume it will replace a brighter standard floodlight in every recessed-lighting installation.
Do you need a Hue Bridge?
No—not for basic control. Essential bulbs can be set up and controlled over Bluetooth using compatible Hue controls. This is suitable for a small installation where you need local app or voice control and do not need advanced automation.
A Bridge becomes useful for:
- larger or whole-home installations;
- schedules and more advanced automations;
- control while away from home;
- Hue Sync;
- broader accessory integration; and
- more extensive system management.
The current U.S. Hue store lists the standard Hue Bridge at $69.99, supporting up to 50 lights and 12 accessories. The Hue Bridge Pro is listed at $139.99, supporting more than 150 lights and 50 accessories.
The official starter-kit page also lists Bridge Pro features including Hue Sync, MotionAware, whole-home control, and advanced encryption. Bridge Pro is an upgrade hub, not a mandatory purchase for Essential bulbs.
What is different about Bridge Pro?
According to Signify, Bridge Pro has a processor five times more powerful than the original Hue Bridge, 15 times more memory, capacity for more than 500 custom lighting scenes, and support for Hue MotionAware, which can use Hue lights as motion sensors.

- 【Compatibility Note at First】Works with AC 120V only. Supports 2.4GHz Wi-Fi band only – 5G band are not supported. Dual-band routers work fine – simply choose the 2.4GHz hotspot during setup. If 2.4GHz and 5GHz share the same name and connection fails, set different names for each band and retry. ⚠️Requires DayBetter App – Not compatible with Tuya, Smartlife, Magic Home App. Does not support MATTER/Home Assistant by now. Do not use with physical dimmer switches – dim via the App or voice.
- 【Smart Bulbs Compatible with Alexa & Google Home】 Experience true hands-free convenience by simply saying, "Alexa, turn on the lights." No hub required! Standard E26 base (approx. 26mm diameter) – fits most standard US light fixtures. ⚠️Not compatible with E12 candelabra bases, GU10 pin bases, or other non-E26 sockets. Please check your old bulb's base type before purchasing. Easily connect to Alexa or Google Assistant via the DAYBETTER App. Control your lights on/off, adjust brightness, change colors, and set custom schedules from anywhere—perfect for cooking, late nights, or setting the right mood anytime.
- 【Quick & Stable Setup with Wi‑Fi + Bluetooth】Our smart bulbs support both Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth for fast, reliable connectivity. Simply download the DAYBETTER App, connect to your 2.4GHz Wi‑Fi network (5GHz band is not supported), and complete the device pairing in minutes. Follow the manual to customize your lighting settings. Enjoy seamless integration with Alexa and Google Assistant for effortless voice control anytime.
- 【RGB Colors and Adjustable White Light】 The wifi light bulbs offer RGB colors for mood and decorative lighting – ideal for parties, gaming, or relaxing ambiance. In white light mode only, the energy-efficient 9W smart bulbs (equivalent to 60W) deliver max 800LM brightness for everyday ambient illumination, ranging from warm tones (2700K) to cool tones (6500K). Switch between RGB mode and white light mode via the APP to match any occasion.
- 【Scheduling and Group Control】 Automate daily routines, such as activating sunrise mode in the morning, dimming lights before bed. You can also add multiple bulbs to a group for convenient and quick control.
Those improvements matter primarily in large or advanced Hue installations. They do not make Bridge Pro necessary for a single Essential bulb or a modest group of lights. For most multi-room buyers, the standard Bridge is the more economical hub unless they specifically need Bridge Pro’s higher capacity or newer features.
What does a complete Essential setup cost?
Using the current listed U.S. prices, before tax, shipping, or promotions:
| Setup | Approximate total | What it provides |
|---|---|---|
| One Essential A19 | $24.99 | Bluetooth-controlled single bulb |
| Four Essential A19 bulbs | $59.99 | Four-bulb bundle, Bluetooth control |
| Four-pack plus standard Bridge | $129.98 | Four bulbs plus expanded Hue features |
| Four-pack plus Bridge Pro | $199.98 | Four bulbs plus the higher-capacity hub |
The Hue store may offer bundle promotions. At the time reflected in the supplied pricing information, its “create your own starter kit” page advertised 20% off when a Bridge or Bridge Pro and at least one eligible light or accessory were purchased together. Eligibility, stock, and promotional pricing can change.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhich Essential bulb fits your fixture?
- Choose Essential A19 for ordinary E26 lamps and fixtures when 800 lumens is sufficient and color lighting is desired.
- Choose Essential BR30 for compatible recessed or floodlight-style fixtures when 650 lumens is sufficient.
- Check GU10 carefully: GU10 spotlights are not interchangeable with E26 bulbs, and a current U.S. price was not established in the supplied product results.
Socket type, bulb shape, brightness, beam pattern, and the fixture’s environmental requirements matter as much as smart-home compatibility. Check the exact model’s enclosure and damp-location rating before installing it in a covered or wet-area fixture.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Who should buy Essential?
Essential is the strongest choice for buyers who want to enter Hue at the lowest Hue-branded price, especially when:
- the installation uses standard E26 fixtures;
- 800 lumens for an A19 or 650 lumens for a BR30 is enough;
- color lighting is wanted without paying standard Hue prices;
- Bluetooth-only control is adequate; or
- the buyer expects to expand into a Bridge-based Hue system later.
The four-pack is particularly attractive for outfitting several lamps or fixtures at once. Start with Bluetooth if the installation is small, then add the standard Bridge when remote control, schedules, accessories, or more rooms become important.

Who should choose standard Hue instead?
Standard Hue is the better fit when the lighting itself matters more than the entry price. Choose it if you need:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- deeper dimming down to the listed 0.2% level;
- the highest available brightness in the A19 range;
- standard Hue’s more advanced white-light or color specifications;
- highly visible entertainment effects or scene transitions; or
- premium lighting performance across a room.
Essential should also not be treated as automatically cheaper than every competing smart-lighting ecosystem. The supplied pricing establishes its position within Hue, but current competitor pricing, Matter support, app features, and regional availability require separate model-by-model comparisons.
Availability and price caveats
The Essential family was announced globally, but products do not necessarily launch in every country at the same time. European launch pricing cannot be applied automatically to U.S. buyers. The U.S. catalog clearly lists the Essential A19 and BR30, while the supplied research does not confirm a current U.S. price for Essential GU10 or Essential light strips.
For any purchase, check the live product page for country, socket, stock status, regular price, and promotion. Do not confuse a bundle or sale price with a permanent manufacturer’s suggested retail price.
The Bottom Line
The verdict: Hue Essential makes the ecosystem meaningfully more accessible, especially through the $59.99 A19 four-pack. It is best understood as lower-performance Hue, not identical “cheap Hue” and not a replacement for standard bulbs. Choose Essential for affordable color lighting and future Hue compatibility; choose standard Hue when deep dimming, higher output, or premium color and white-light performance matter more. A standard Bridge is enough for most expanded systems, while Bridge Pro is mainly for large or advanced installations.
