Signify announced it on September 4, 2025, and the current US Philips Hue store lists a two-bulb color starter kit at $99.99, including a standard Hue Bridge. It offers Hue’s app, ecosystem and expansion options at a lower entry price, but it is not necessarily the cheapest smart lighting and its lighting performance is described by Signify as simplified.

What is Philips Hue Essential?
Hue Essential is an entry-level product family within the Philips Hue ecosystem. It is designed for people who want to start with one room or a few bulbs without paying the higher prices associated with some standard and premium Hue products.
It is not a separate smart-home platform. Essential products are intended to work alongside compatible regular Hue lights, accessories and the Hue app. The range includes:
#1 Best Overall
- SWITCH TO SMART LIGHTING: Simply screw in your new smart bulb, download the award-winning Hue app, then start controlling and customizing your smart light remotely
- CREATE AMBIANCE WITH COLOR: Find the right light with the LED lights for any mood with millions of colors and a packed library of preset light scenes designed by Hue’s lighting experts
- SMOOTH DIMMING: Easily dim your smart light bulbs from full brightness all the way down to 2% using the Hue app to achieve the right level of lighting for whatever you’re doing
- CONTROL USING YOUR VOICE: Connect to your home assistant, and you’ll be able to control your LED light bulbs remotely using voice commands—compatible with Alexa, Google Assistant, and Apple Home.
- EXPAND YOUR SETUP: Add a Hue Bridge and other Hue products to unlock more features, including home security and content syncing with music, movies, and video games
- A19/E26 color bulbs in the US
- BR30 bulbs where sold
- GU10 spotlights
- Essential starter kits
- Essential strip lights
- Essential Flex strip lights
Availability, socket formats and product variants differ between the US, Europe, the UK and other regions. US buyers should check the exact Philips Hue product page rather than assume that every Essential model is sold locally.
Signify’s announcement positioned Essential as a more affordable way to enter Hue while retaining the company’s software, connectivity and wider ecosystem compatibility.
When did Hue Essential launch?
- September 4, 2025: Signify announced the Essential range.
- September 2025: North American bulbs and starter kits were scheduled to become available.
- December 2025: North American Essential strip lights were scheduled to follow.
- August 18, 2026: US Essential starter kits were listed for purchase on Philips Hue’s store.
Some early coverage, including a September 9, 2025 report from T3, used future-tense launch language because the products had just been announced. The current answer is that the range has moved beyond announcement, although availability remains region- and model-dependent.

The following prices were visible on Philips Hue’s US store on August 18, 2026:
| Product | Price seen | What it includes or supports |
|---|---|---|
| Essential two-bulb starter kit | $99.99 | Two E26 color bulbs and a standard Hue Bridge |
| Essential four-bulb starter kit | $119.99 | Four Essential color bulbs and a standard Hue Bridge |
| Standard Hue Bridge | $69.99 | Up to 50 lights and 12 accessories, according to Philips |
| Hue Bridge Pro | $139.99 | 150+ lights and 50+ accessories, plus advanced features |
Signify’s launch announcement gave starting prices of $24.99 for Essential A19 and BR30 bulbs and $59.99 for a five-meter Essential strip light in North America. Those launch figures should not be confused with current individual-product prices or temporary promotions.
For comparison, Philips Hue’s US starter-kit page also listed a two-bulb standard white starter kit at $76.99. If you only need basic white light, Essential’s color capability may not justify the additional cost.
Check the current Hue starter-kit page before buying, because stock, promotions and bundle prices can change.

What is in the two-bulb Essential kit?
The current US two-bulb kit contains two A19-shaped E26 bulbs and a standard Hue Bridge. The listed bulb specifications include:
- Up to 800 lumens per bulb
- Warm-to-cool white light from 2,200K to 6,500K
- Color lighting
- Dimming down to 2%
- Bluetooth and Zigbee communication
- 25,000-hour nominal lifetime
- Two-year warranty
- IP20 indoor rating
- Android 10 or later and iOS 16 or later app support
The bulbs are designed for indoor use. Check the fitting, physical dimensions, enclosure requirements and brightness before installing one in a particular fixture. An E26 bulb is the US socket format; European listings commonly use E27.
The official product page lists support for Alexa, Apple Home, Google Assistant, Cortana, SmartThings and other integrations. Matter functionality may require the Hue Bridge or another compatible hub.
Do Essential bulbs need a Hue Bridge?
No—not for basic nearby Bluetooth control. You can begin with a small number of Essential bulbs and use Bluetooth for local control. That makes a Bluetooth-only setup reasonable for one room, a rental property or someone testing whether smart lighting fits their home.
A Bridge becomes the better choice when you want:
- Control while away from home
- Multiple rooms
- Schedules and more extensive automations
- Hue switches, sensors and other accessories
- Entertainment or media synchronization
- A larger, more reliable Hue installation
Philips describes Bluetooth as suitable for a few lights and basic phone control, while its buying guide recommends a Bridge for expansion and advanced features. The two-bulb Essential starter kit already includes the standard Bridge, which is usually the more sensible purchase for someone who expects to add lights later.
Standard Bridge or Bridge Pro?
Most beginners should choose the standard Bridge supplied with the Essential starter kit. Philips lists it as supporting up to 50 lights and 12 accessories, which is ample for a typical apartment or smaller home.
The Bridge Pro is aimed at larger or more advanced installations. Philips lists support for 150+ lights and 50+ accessories, along with features such as MotionAware, Hue Sync and enhanced whole-home capabilities. Signify says it has a processor five times more powerful and 15 times more memory than the standard Bridge, and can store more than 500 custom scenes.
Rank #3
- WARM WHITE LIGHT: Light up your home and create a warm, welcoming feel with soft white light (2700K) ideal for bedrooms, living rooms, and spaces to relax
- LOW DIMMING: Dim your LED light bulb smoothly from full brightness down to 5% to achieve the right lighting for whatever you’re doing, whether watching a movie or unwinding before bed
- SMART CONTROLS: Control your LED light remotely using the award-winning Hue app or add a Bridge to control using your preferred home assistant—compatible with Alexa, Google Assistant, and Apple Home
- EASY TO USE: Simply screw in your new smart LED bulb, download the award-winning Hue app, and start enjoying all the benefits of smart lighting—it's as easy as that
- BUILT TO LAST: These Hue LED bulbs are designed to last, with an average lifespan of 25,000 hours
Those capabilities are difficult to justify for two Essential bulbs. Start with the standard Bridge unless you already know you are building a large Hue system.
What has been simplified?
This is the most important qualification. Signify says Essential uses the same Hue software and ecosystem compatibility but provides “simplified lighting performance.”
The announcement does not provide a complete model-by-model breakdown showing exactly what changes compared with premium Hue bulbs. It does not establish that every Essential product matches standard Hue products in brightness, color gamut, color rendering, effects, materials, dimming behavior or longevity.
Therefore, Essential should not be described as identical Hue performance for less money. The current two-bulb kit lists a CRI of at least 80, 800 lumens and a two-year warranty, but those specifications should not automatically be applied to every Essential bulb, spotlight or strip light.
Essential versus standard Hue
| Category | Hue Essential | Standard or premium Hue |
|---|---|---|
| Entry price | Lower | Generally higher |
| Hue app control | Yes | Yes |
| Bluetooth operation | Yes | Common on newer products |
| Hue Bridge compatibility | Yes | Yes |
| White and color lighting | Available, depending on model | Available across relevant product lines |
| Lighting performance | Simplified and model-specific | Broader range of premium options |
| Best suited to | First rooms and budget-conscious Hue buyers | Enthusiasts and whole-home installations |
The central advantage is compatibility. Essential does not abandon the Hue ecosystem, so buyers can begin with lower-cost bulbs and later add compatible standard Hue lights, switches and sensors.

Matter, Thread and smart-home compatibility
Signify announced Matter-over-Thread support for the new generation of Hue bulbs, including Essential. However, the current US product page describes Matter functionality through the Hue Bridge or compatible third-party hubs and Thread border routers, while listing Bluetooth and Zigbee as the bulbs’ communication protocols.
That means buyers should not assume that every Essential bulb works hub-free with every Matter platform. Check the exact model, firmware, region and requirements of the platform you intend to use before purchase. For many households, the included Hue Bridge remains the simplest route to broader integrations.

- SWITCH TO SMART LIGHTING: Enjoy smart lighting instantly: screw in your bulb, download the Hue app, and control your light remotely.

Are the Essential strip lights part of the same range?
Yes. The Essential family includes an Essential strip light and an Essential Flex strip light. Signify announced a North American price of $59.99 for a five-meter Essential strip light, with regional availability and pricing varying for the Flex version.
Do not confuse these with Philips Hue’s more expensive redesigned strip-light products. Signify separately announced premium OmniGlow and Flux strip lights; OmniGlow, for example, uses CSP technology and reaches up to 4,500 lumens. Those products are not part of the budget Essential range.
Which Essential setup should you buy?
Choose the two-bulb kit if you want to try Hue
The $99.99 two-bulb kit is the lowest-commitment route into color-capable Hue with a Bridge included. It suits a bedroom, living room or small apartment where you may eventually add more lights.
Choose the four-bulb kit if you already know you need several lights
At the listed $119.99 price, the four-bulb kit is aimed at buyers equipping several fixtures at once. It is a better starting point for a multi-light room, but the two-bulb kit is safer if you are unsure whether Hue’s ecosystem is worth the cost.
Choose a standard white kit if color is unnecessary
The standard white two-bulb kit listed below the Essential color kit is worth checking if you only want dimmable warm-to-white lighting. Essential is not automatically the cheapest Hue option.
Consider standard Hue or Bridge Pro for a serious whole-home system
If you need particularly high brightness, advanced lighting effects, a large number of accessories or a substantial whole-home installation, compare individual standard and premium Hue products instead of assuming Essential will meet every requirement.

Important installation limitations
Smart bulbs need continuous power
If someone turns off the physical wall switch, the bulb loses power and cannot respond to app commands or automations. In rooms used by several people, consider a Hue-compatible dimmer, smart button or wall-control solution so the light remains accessible without cutting power.
Best Value
- NATURAL DAYLIGHT AT HOME - This smart bulb has a wider than average CCT range covering the spectrum of daylight: from relaxing tones below 2700K through blue-sky light at 12000K to high-energy light
- ULTRA-LOW DIMMING - Dim your LED light bulb from full brightness all the way to 0.2% to achieve the right lighting for whatever you’re doing, whether you’re watching a movie or unwinding before bed
- CONSISTENT COLOR - Chromasync technology ensures consistent & vibrant colors, with precision color matching so that all your smart LED bulbs produce the exact same color when you sync them together
- SMART CONTROLS - Control your LED light remotely using the award-winning Hue app or add a Bridge to control using your preferred home assistant—compatible with Alexa, Google Assistant, and Apple Home
- BUILT TO LAST - These Hue LED bulbs are designed to last, with an average lifespan of 25,000 hours
800 lumens may not suit every room
The current two-bulb kit lists up to 800 lumens per bulb. That may be sufficient for lamps and accent lighting, but task lighting, kitchens and larger rooms may need more fixtures or brighter models. Compare lumens—not only watt-equivalent marketing—and check whether a fitting requires a particular bulb shape.
Indoor rating matters
The current E26 Essential bulb is rated IP20 for indoor use. It is not an outdoor or wet-location product. Check the rating of the exact Essential model before installing it in a bathroom, covered exterior fixture or other damp location.
Is Hue Essential good value?
Essential is good value when the priority is entering the Hue ecosystem at a lower price. You get color and tunable-white lighting, Bluetooth for a simple start, a path to Bridge-based expansion and compatibility with the broader Hue system.

It is less compelling if the only goal is the lowest possible smart-bulb price. Budget Wi-Fi ecosystems such as Govee may be more attractive for shoppers focused on upfront cost and broad RGB products. WiZ is another Philips-associated, more budget-oriented option, while Nanoleaf is better known for decorative, design-led lighting.
Those alternatives use different ecosystem strategies, and current prices, stock and compatibility should be checked directly. Essential’s premium is primarily for the Hue platform and its expansion path—not simply for making a bulb turn on and off from a phone.
Bottom line
Philips Hue Essential makes Hue more approachable, but it is not the same as making smart lighting universally cheap. The range launched in September 2025, is available in the US by August 2026, and currently starts with a $99.99 two-bulb color kit that includes the standard Bridge.
Buy it if you want Hue’s app, integrations and expandable ecosystem. Choose Bluetooth-only control for a small, simple installation, or use the included standard Bridge if you expect multiple rooms, automations or accessories. If your priority is the absolute lowest price, basic white light or a completely hub-free Matter setup, compare other options before buying.
