LG did demonstrate a robot folding and stacking laundry at CES 2026, but it did not announce a consumer product launch. Called LG CLOiD, the machine is a broader AI-enabled home robot designed to coordinate appliances and perform physical household tasks. LG’s official announcements did not include a price, release date, preorder program, or confirmed retail channel.
The CES demonstration showed CLOiD initiating laundry-related tasks through connected appliances, then handling garments after they dried. “Laundry-folding robot” is therefore useful shorthand, but CLOiD is not a dedicated folding appliance.

What LG revealed at CES 2026
LG announced CLOiD ahead of CES and demonstrated it in Las Vegas from January 6–9, 2026. The robot was presented as part of LG’s wider Zero Labor Home strategy. LG listed CLOiD at booth #15004 in the Las Vegas Convention Center.

In the laundry scenario, household occupants leave, CLOiD starts laundry-related tasks using connected appliances, and the robot later handles, folds, and stacks the dried garments. LG also showed or described tasks such as retrieving milk, placing a croissant in an oven, preparing breakfast, organizing dishes, retrieving workout clothing, and clearing obstacles from a cleaning path.

It is a general-purpose home robot, not a folding machine
CLOiD’s most attention-grabbing capability is its ability to manipulate soft clothing, but laundry is only one part of the concept. LG describes the robot as a mobile household assistant that can interact with appliances, objects, and people in the home.
That distinction matters. Starting a washing cycle through LG’s ThinQ ecosystem is primarily an appliance-integration task. Picking up a garment, finding its edges, orienting it, folding it correctly, and stacking it is a much harder physical-robotics problem.

How CLOiD is built
According to LG’s official specifications, CLOiD includes:
- A wheeled autonomous base rather than bipedal legs.
- Two articulated arms.
- Seven degrees of freedom in each arm.
- Hands with five independently actuated fingers per hand.
- A head unit containing a display, speaker, camera, and sensors.
- A tilting torso intended to help it reach from approximately knee level upward.
The wheeled base should provide greater stability than a walking humanoid platform, while the arms and articulated hands are intended to let CLOiD operate household objects. However, the hardware specifications do not by themselves prove human-equivalent dexterity or dependable operation in an ordinary home.
What AI does LG say it uses?
LG describes CLOiD as using vision-based learning, environmental understanding, voice interaction, autonomous navigation, and integration with the ThinQ ecosystem. The company frames the robot’s operation through a “Sense-Think-Act” model: detect conditions, decide what to do, and take physical action.
LG also positions the head unit as a mobile AI home hub and uses its “Affectionate Intelligence” branding. A Korean-language LG announcement refers to vision-language and vision-language-action technologies trained on household-task data. Those statements should be understood as LG’s description of its technology, not as independently validated evidence of performance.

Why folding laundry is difficult for robots
Clothing is a particularly demanding material for robotic manipulation. Unlike a cup or a box, a garment has no fixed shape and can change form every time it is lifted.
- Garments can overlap, tangle, or hide one another.
- Shirts, trousers, socks, towels, and bedding have different shapes and handling requirements.
- Thin edges and sleeves are harder to detect and grasp than rigid handles.
- Fabric varies in weight, stretch, texture, dampness, and wrinkle level.
- A garment may be inside out, partly trapped, or positioned unpredictably.
A controlled task involving one visible towel is different from processing a mixed load. A reliable home system would need to identify each item, separate it from other garments, find usable edges, fold it consistently, and place it in the correct stack. It would also need to recover when a person, pet, basket, appliance, or piece of clothing blocks the expected route.
How well did the CES demonstration work?
The official demonstration shows that CLOiD can perform laundry-folding motions in a staged setting. It does not establish how reliably the robot would work unsupervised in a typical home.

An independent Tom’s Guide report described a live folding attempt in which CLOiD became confused while folding a towel. That observation is useful because it illustrates the gap between a compelling demonstration and dependable everyday automation. It is not, however, a formal failure rate or proof that the entire system does not work.

What LG has not announced
In the official CES material reviewed, LG did not provide:
- A consumer price.
- A release or delivery date.
- A preorder page or retail listing.
- A confirmed country-by-country sales plan.
- A subscription, service, or maintenance fee.
- A final consumer specification.
- A published folding accuracy or reliability rate.
- A confirmed list of compatible washers, dryers, or other appliances.
ThinQ integration also does not mean CLOiD will work with every LG appliance. Compatibility, room layout, required setup, privacy controls, and the degree of human supervision remain unanswered practical questions.
Could it work in a real home?
The wheeled design would require clear, navigable floors and enough space around laundry appliances. Steps, thresholds, clutter, pets, children, narrow laundry rooms, and blocked doors could all affect operation. A household would also need to consider where garments are placed and whether the robot can reach, identify, and separate them.
Recommended Free Tools
LG emphasizes stability and safety around children and pets as design goals, but those claims should not be confused with independently verified household safety certification. Cameras, microphones, and other sensors also raise ordinary smart-home questions about data processing, cloud dependence, account permissions, storage, and privacy. A complete consumer data architecture was not provided in the reviewed announcements.

Can you buy CLOiD now?
There is no confirmed consumer purchase route in the official material reviewed. LG’s announcements establish a public CES demonstration and an ongoing home-robotics development effort, not a retail launch.
Readers looking to reduce laundry work today can buy washing and drying equipment such as LG’s WashCombo and WashTower products. Those machines automate cleaning and drying, but they do not pick up clothing, fold it, or stack it. Robot vacuums are likewise adjacent automation products, not substitutes for CLOiD’s demonstrated manipulation capability.
The practical verdict
LG CLOiD is best understood as a public working demonstration of a general-purpose home robot, with laundry folding serving as its clearest showcase of physical dexterity. It is more ambitious than a smart washer or dryer because it is intended to act across appliances and household objects.
But the evidence does not support calling it a finished, available laundry-folding appliance. Until LG publishes pricing, availability, compatibility, performance data, and operating requirements, CLOiD remains a future-facing home-robotics platform rather than something consumers can order.
