Yes—but not every bulb becomes a standalone sensor. The Philips Hue Bridge Pro’s MotionAware feature detects movement by analyzing changes in Zigbee wireless signals between three or four compatible, powered Hue lights. It can automate indoor lighting without a dedicated motion sensor, but placement, compatibility, continuous power, and the difference between motion and presence all matter.
What is Philips Hue MotionAware?
MotionAware is exclusive to the Philips Hue Bridge Pro. According to Philips Hue, the Bridge Pro measures fluctuations in the Zigbee signals exchanged between compatible Hue devices. Movement through the area changes the radio environment, allowing the system to identify motion.

That means MotionAware is best understood as radio-based motion detection using a network of lights. The lights do not independently contain conventional PIR or radar sensors, and they do not each become universal motion detectors.

Philips Hue’s MotionAware overview and its support guide describe the feature and its current limitations.
How many Hue lights do you need?
You need at least three compatible Hue lights for one MotionAware area. Philips supports a working arrangement of three or four sensing lights, with up to four MotionAware areas per Bridge Pro.
The sensing lights must:
- Be compatible models.
- Be connected to the same Bridge Pro.
- Remain powered on and reachable by the bridge.
- Be positioned to cover the area where movement is expected.
Philips recommends spacing the lights approximately 1–7 meters (3–23 feet) apart and avoiding a layout in which all lights sit in one straight line. A three-dimensional arrangement—with fixtures at varied heights where possible—can create a more useful coverage area. Walls, ceilings, unusual room shapes, and open-plan layouts can affect performance.
The feature is therefore most practical in rooms, paths, entryways, and stair areas that already contain several suitable Hue fixtures. A room with only one ceiling bulb does not meet the minimum requirement.
How to set up MotionAware in the Hue app
- Open the current Philips Hue app.
- Go to Settings.
- Open Motion areas.
- Create a new MotionAware area.
- Select the relevant room or zone.
- Choose three or four compatible, reachable lights.
- Confirm the selected lights. They may blink so you can identify them.
- Leave the area while the system calibrates. People and pets should not remain inside the sensing area.
- Choose the lights or automations that should respond.
- Set sensitivity and active time slots.
- Test the area by walking through it from several directions.
The app disables rooms that do not contain enough compatible lights. If a room does not appear as an option, check the number, model, power status, and bridge assignment of its fixtures.
After moving lights, changing the room layout, or adding obstructions, recalibrate the area. A calibration performed while people or pets are moving inside the space can produce less useful results.
Which Hue lights work with MotionAware?
Philips Hue says the feature supports the vast majority of Hue products, but it also publishes a substantial list of exclusions. The product family name alone is not a reliable compatibility test.
Recommended Free Tools
Listed exceptions include certain models in the Go, Aura, Bloom, Iris, Color Lamp, and Lightstrip ranges, as well as some Smart Plugs, older Dimmer Switches, Smart Buttons, Tap devices, Wall Switch Modules, Hue sensors, cameras, doorbells, and non-Hue or non-Friends-of-Hue Zigbee products.
Check Philips Hue’s live MotionAware compatibility table by model ID. Philips directs users to Settings > Software update in the Hue app to check device information. The list may change as firmware support develops, so do not assume that an older or third-party device will work.
What MotionAware is good at
- Automatic hallway lighting: Lights can respond as someone walks through a passage.
- Entryways and paths: Correctly arranged fixtures can detect movement approaching or passing through an entrance.
- Stair areas: Multiple fixtures at suitable heights may create useful coverage for a stairwell or landing.
- Multi-room responses: Philips’ support documentation says a sensing area can control lights in up to three rooms or one zone.
- Lighting-based security responses: Movement can be used for alerts or light alarms in supported Hue Secure configurations.
These are area-based automations, not precision tracking. MotionAware can identify movement that changes the radio signals between participating lights, but it should not be described as providing camera-like location accuracy or human identification.

Motion detection is not the same as presence detection
MotionAware detects movement, not guaranteed continuous occupancy. Someone walking through a room should create the changes the system is designed to recognize. Someone who sits completely still, works at a desk, or remains in bed may eventually stop producing those signal changes.

If your goal is to keep lights on while a person remains motionless, you may need a dedicated presence sensor or a hybrid automation using timers and other inputs.
MotionAware also should not be treated as a dedicated daylight sensor. Philips’ feature description centers on Zigbee signal changes rather than the ambient-light measurement provided by a conventional Hue motion sensor. Use schedules, time slots, ambient-light automations, or a separate light sensor if daylight-aware behavior is important.
Does MotionAware replace a Hue motion sensor?
Sometimes, but not universally. MotionAware can replace an additional sensor for indoor lighting when a room already has at least three compatible Hue lights arranged appropriately. It is especially attractive when you want to avoid installing another device on a wall or ceiling.
A dedicated Hue Motion Sensor remains the better choice when:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- The room has only one or two Hue lights.
- You need the sensor positioned independently of the light fixtures.
- You want a conventional daylight sensor.
- You need predictable coverage at a doorway, stair landing, or narrow corridor.
- The fixtures are poorly placed for radio-based sensing.
- The room may be dark because a wall switch cuts power to the lights.
- You need reliable detection of someone who may remain still.
- The installation is outdoors or semi-outdoors.
Philips’ buying guide listed the Hue Motion Sensor at $48.99 as of the research date, although prices and promotions vary. For one hallway, buying one sensor can be more economical than replacing a $69.99 standard Bridge with a $139.99 Bridge Pro.
MotionAware and security
MotionAware can contribute to Hue Secure-style lighting responses and alerts, but it is not a professional security system. It does not provide camera evidence, identity verification, tamper-resistant installation, or the perimeter coverage of a dedicated security solution.
Basic convenience automations—such as turning lights on when movement is detected—are the core use case. Security notifications and event-history functions may require a Hue Secure subscription or a separate MotionAware subscription, depending on the user’s configuration and market. Philips’ documentation also notes that subscription requirements can differ when a user already has a Hue camera.
Subscription availability and pricing are geography-dependent. Do not assume that terms shown on a non-U.S. Philips page apply to a U.S. account.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

The participating lights must remain powered and connected. If a traditional wall switch, smart switch, unplugged lamp, or power interruption removes one or more sensing lights from the network, the MotionAware area may stop working or become unreliable until power is restored.

- LEVEL UP YOUR MOVIES, MUSIC, AND GAMES WITH SURROUND LIGHTING: Make your lights dance, flash, dim and brighten along to your movies, TV shows, PC and music, the sync requires HDMI Sync Box
This is an important consideration during construction or renovation. Hue fixtures should be installed on circuits that remain continuously powered, with lighting controlled through the Hue system rather than by routinely cutting power at the wall. Outdoor fixtures and rental installations may be particularly difficult if power cannot be kept stable.
Philips’ guidance is oriented toward indoor spaces and cautions that outdoor performance is less effective because Zigbee signals rely on their surrounding environment. MotionAware should not be used as a direct replacement for an outdoor PIR security sensor.

Should existing Hue owners upgrade?
Upgrade to Bridge Pro if you already have several compatible lights in the same rooms, are nearing the standard Bridge’s capacity, want MotionAware, or need a larger multi-room system.
Keep the standard Bridge if your system is small, your existing automations work reliably, and you do not have three compatible lights in the spaces where motion detection would be useful.
Buy a dedicated Hue Motion Sensor if you need one precisely positioned sensor, daylight sensing, or coverage in a room with fewer than three compatible fixtures.
Philips provides an upgrade path for existing Bridge owners. Its migration guide says rooms, zones, scenes, names, power-up behaviors, and device-specific settings can migrate. Legacy SmartLink or LightLink products may not be supported and could require resetting and re-adding.
Before migrating, record older devices and keep the original Bridge available until the new setup is confirmed. After migration, recheck scenes, entertainment areas, automations, integrations, and any non-Hue Zigbee devices that may need reconnection.
Troubleshooting MotionAware
No MotionAware option appears
- Confirm that the hub is a Bridge Pro, not a standard Hue Bridge.
- Update the Hue app, Bridge Pro software, and light firmware.
- Check that the room or zone contains at least three compatible lights.
- Check excluded model IDs in Philips’ compatibility table.
- Verify that all sensing lights are assigned to the same Bridge Pro.
Detection is inconsistent
- Check the approximate 1–7 meter spacing recommendation.
- Avoid placing every sensing light in one straight line.
- Use fixtures that cover the actual walking path.
- Avoid walls between sensing lights where possible.
- Confirm that all participating lights have continuous power.
- Update firmware before treating the issue as a hardware failure.
- Recalibrate after moving fixtures or changing the room layout.
False triggers or movement detected in an adjacent area
- Lower MotionAware sensitivity.
- Move sensing lights farther from walls, ceilings, or boundaries where practical.
- Add a fourth sensing light to improve the area’s geometry.
- Recalibrate with people and pets outside the sensing area.
- Ensure the configured area does not unintentionally cross a doorway, wall boundary, or floor boundary.
Bottom line
Philips Hue Bridge Pro can turn a properly arranged group of three or four compatible Hue lights into a useful indoor motion-detection system. It can eliminate the need for a separate sensor in some rooms, particularly when the lights are already installed and continuously powered.
It does not turn every bulb into an independent sensor, guarantee presence detection, measure daylight like a dedicated Hue sensor, or replace outdoor and professional security equipment. The $139.99 upgrade makes the most sense for larger Hue installations or homes that can take advantage of several MotionAware areas—not for a small setup that needs one precisely placed motion sensor.
