Hue Bridge Pro

Philips Hue Bridge Pro Can Turn Your Lights Into Motion Sensors—With Important Limits

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Yes—but only with Philips Hue Bridge Pro. Its MotionAware feature analyzes changes in Zigbee wireless signals between three or four compatible Hue lights to detect movement. It does not make every bulb an independent sensor, and it is not available on the ordinary Hue Bridge.

For existing Hue owners with several suitably positioned lights, MotionAware could provide sensor-free lighting automation. For a small room, outdoor area, or precisely positioned doorway sensor, a dedicated Hue motion sensor may still be the better choice.

What MotionAware actually does

Hue lights already communicate over a Zigbee mesh network. When someone moves through the signal paths between several lights, the wireless environment changes. Bridge Pro interprets those fluctuations as movement.

In practical terms, the bulbs are not individually “seeing” people. The Bridge Pro is analyzing signal changes between multiple lights. Philips describes the feature as MotionAware.

That makes it closer to movement or occupancy detection than to a camera. It does not produce an image, and the available documentation does not establish reliable identification of a person, people-counting, or dependable detection of someone who remains completely still.

The most important clarification: this is Bridge Pro only

The headline refers to the Hue Bridge Pro, introduced by Signify on September 4, 2025—not the standard Hue Bridge. Philips explicitly lists MotionAware as exclusive to Bridge Pro.

The regular Bridge can control Hue lights and dedicated Hue motion sensors, but it cannot use the lights themselves as MotionAware sensors. Buying the less expensive standard Bridge will not enable this feature.

What you need

  • A Hue Bridge Pro.
  • Three or four compatible Hue lights for each detection area.
  • All selected lights connected to the same Bridge Pro.
  • Lights that remain powered and reachable.
  • An indoor layout that gives the lights useful spacing and signal paths.

Philips recommends placing the lights roughly 1–7 metres (3–23 feet) apart, at varying heights where possible. Avoid putting them all in a straight line, and avoid walls between them where practical. Position them around entrances, walkways, or other routes people use.

Philips says Bridge Pro can support up to four MotionAware areas, with three or four compatible lights per area. That is not unlimited whole-home coverage: a house with many rooms cannot automatically turn every bulb into a separate motion detector.

Compatibility is not guaranteed

Philips claims that up to 95% of existing Hue products are compatible, but that is a manufacturer claim rather than an independently verified compatibility rate. Check the exact models in the Hue app and Philips’ compatibility guidance.

Some older Philips products based on ZigBee SmartLink or ZigBee LightLink—including certain Living Colors and Living Whites products—do not support this mode. A product that works with Hue generally should not automatically be assumed to support MotionAware.

How to set up a MotionAware area

  1. Open the Hue app and choose a room or zone for the detection area.
  2. Select three or four compatible, reachable lights.
  3. Allow the selected lights to blink so you can confirm the fixtures.
  4. Leave the area during calibration, ensuring that people and pets are absent.
  5. Choose what should happen when movement is detected, such as turning lights on or off or triggering another Hue action.
  6. Adjust sensitivity and behavior after testing the area.

Later changes are available at Hue app → Settings → Motion areas. From there, you can adjust sensitivity, temporarily disable an area, and revise which lights respond.

Philips says the system can learn about changes in the room over time, but users should not expect perfect or immediate detection. Geometry, furniture, walls, pets, and the selected sensitivity all matter.

Common problems and fixes

Motion is detected too early

The sensing area may be too close to a doorway or wall, or sensitivity may be too high. Select lights farther into the room or reduce sensitivity.

Motion is detected too late

The lights may not cover the route into the room. Move the detection geometry closer to the entrance or increase sensitivity.

Movement in another room triggers the lights

Signal changes can be interpreted across nearby spaces, floors, walls, or ceilings. Try selecting lights farther from walls and ceilings, add a fourth light, and reduce sensitivity.

Pets cause false triggers

Lower sensitivity or choose lights positioned where pets are less likely to move. Philips’ documentation does not establish a dedicated pet-filtering mode comparable with some camera or radar systems.

The app will not allow a room to be selected

The room may have fewer than three eligible lights, incompatible legacy products, or lights that are unreachable. Confirm the model compatibility, power state, and Bridge Pro connection.

Calibration fails

Make sure every selected light is powered, people and pets leave the area, and the lights are suitably spaced. Check the layout, try adding a fourth light, then recalibrate after changing the sensitivity or fixture positions.

What MotionAware is not

  • It is not a camera. The documented mechanism is Zigbee signal analysis, not video.
  • It is not a standalone sensor in each bulb. Detection depends on the Bridge Pro and a group of lights.
  • It is not guaranteed presence detection. The documented behavior concerns movement; it should not be treated as reliable tracking of someone sitting still.
  • It is not a substitute for every motion sensor. A room with one or two lights may not meet the three-light requirement.
  • It is not automatically a daylight sensor. Philips specifically lists daylight sensing for its dedicated motion sensor, while the MotionAware documentation does not claim equivalent ambient-light measurement.
  • It is not a complete security system. Lighting automation and Hue Secure security features are separate. Philips says security notifications and alarms require a subscription.

Bridge Pro or a dedicated motion sensor?

Philips’ US site listed the indoor Hue motion sensor at $48.99 as of August 18, 2026. It works with the standard Bridge, can be positioned independently of the lights, and includes a daylight sensor.

A standard Bridge plus one indoor sensor would cost about $118.98 at those listed prices, compared with $139.99 for Bridge Pro alone. That comparison is incomplete, however: MotionAware also requires at least three compatible lights arranged appropriately, while a dedicated sensor does not.

Choose Bridge Pro when:

  • You already have three or more compatible Hue lights in a suitable room.
  • You want lighting automation without mounting a separate battery-powered sensor.
  • You want Bridge Pro’s higher capacity or Wi-Fi connection option.
  • You are interested in experimenting with Hue Secure integration, while understanding that security features may require a subscription.

Choose a dedicated indoor motion sensor when:

  • The room has only one or two lights.
  • You need detection at a specific doorway or corridor.
  • You want daylight sensing.
  • The room’s geometry is unsuitable for three-way signal sensing.
  • You want a movable, independently positioned device.

Choose an outdoor sensor for outdoor areas

Philips documents MotionAware as an indoor feature and says outdoor performance is less effective because Zigbee sensing relies on reflections from surrounding objects. For paths, gardens, and driveways, Philips’ dedicated outdoor sensor is the more appropriate category of product.

Is Bridge Pro worth upgrading to?

For an existing Hue owner, the answer depends less on the headline feature than on the room layout. If you already have three or four compatible lights positioned around a hallway, open-plan room, or entrance, MotionAware may add useful automation without installing another device. Bridge Pro is also easier to justify if your system is approaching the standard Bridge’s capacity limits.

If you are starting with one room and one or two bulbs, Bridge Pro is difficult to justify solely for MotionAware. A standard Bridge and dedicated sensor generally provide a more predictable setup, especially where the sensor must be placed at a particular height or doorway.

For security, treat MotionAware as an additional movement trigger rather than a replacement for a purpose-built security system. Hue Secure notifications and alarms are a separate paid layer, and motion detection should not be confused with person identification or continuous surveillance.

Bottom line

MotionAware is a clever use of Hue’s existing Zigbee mesh: Bridge Pro can infer movement from signal changes between three or four compatible lights. But the feature is not available on the standard Bridge, does not make individual bulbs standalone sensors, and depends heavily on spacing, room geometry, calibration, and compatibility.

Bridge Pro makes the strongest case for established Hue owners who already have the right lights in the right arrangement—or who need its higher system capacity. For smaller rooms, precise doorway detection, daylight-aware automation, or outdoor coverage, a dedicated Hue motion sensor remains the more practical option.
