A safe beginner DIY power bank uses one authentic, undamaged 3.6/3.7V lithium-ion cell, a documented single-cell charger/protection/5V boost module, secure wiring, and a protective enclosure. A battery cannot be connected directly to a USB port: the circuit must charge the cell correctly, protect it from electrical faults, and convert its changing voltage into regulated USB power.
For ordinary phone charging, a commercial power bank is usually the safer and simpler choice. Build your own when you need a custom enclosure, project integration, or the learning experience—and treat lithium-ion safety as a design requirement, not an optional extra.

What a DIY power bank contains
A basic single-cell power bank follows this architecture:
USB input → Li-ion charger → battery cell → protection → 5V boost converter → USB output
Many integrated power-bank boards combine these functions, but their ratings and behavior vary. Check the board’s documentation rather than assuming it supports pass-through charging, high current, or USB-C Power Delivery.

A USB-C receptacle alone does not mean fast charging. USB-C may be used only for 5V input or output. USB-C PD requires a source controller, negotiated power profiles, suitable conversion circuitry, and fault protection. Texas Instruments’ PMP4496 reference design illustrates the additional circuitry involved in a proper USB-C power-bank design.
Is building one worth it?
DIY makes sense for a custom size, unusual connector layout, project integration, telemetry, solar input, or educational value. It can also reuse a known-good cell. It is rarely the cheapest way to charge a phone.
A commercial power bank generally offers a better-finished enclosure, tested thermal behavior, more predictable charging and output negotiation, and easier travel use. Even commercial products can be recalled, however, so buy from a reputable source, inspect the product, and check current safety notices.

For a first build, use:
- One new, authentic 3.6/3.7V lithium-ion or lithium-polymer cell with documented capacity and discharge rating.
- A reputable single-cell module explicitly combining charging, battery protection, and regulated 5V boost output.
- A battery holder or mechanically secure connector.
- A USB-A or documented USB-C output.
- An insulated enclosure, strain relief, and suitable wire.
- A multimeter and, ideally, a USB load tester or electronic load.
The module should state its supported chemistry, cell count, charge voltage and current, continuous output current, low-voltage cutoff, short-circuit behavior, and whether it permits powering a load while charging. A marketplace photograph or “5V 2A” title is not enough. Continuous current, thermal derating, startup surges, and input current at low battery voltage matter.
Choose the battery carefully
Use a traceable cell from a reputable manufacturer or distributor. Check its model, nominal voltage, maximum charge voltage, capacity, continuous discharge rating, wrapper, insulating ring, and physical condition.
Reject any cell that is swollen, dented, corroded, leaking, hot, torn, or unidentified. Avoid implausible “9800mAh” 18650 claims, casually reclaimed laptop cells, and cells of different brands, ages, capacities, or charge states connected together.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission warns that loose 18650 cells can short against metal objects and cause overheating, fire, explosion, or serious injury. Never carry an unprotected loose cell in a pocket, toolbox, or metal container with keys or screws.
Cell-level safety features such as separators, positive-temperature-coefficient devices, and current-interrupt devices do not make every cell safe. As UL Research Institutes explains, pack-level protection is also important—and a cheap protection board cannot correct a counterfeit or internally damaged cell.

Generic assembly procedure
This is an architecture, not a universal wiring diagram. The board’s markings and datasheet control.
1. Define the target
Decide whether you need regulated 5V or USB-C PD, the required continuous and peak current, physical dimensions, runtime, and whether pass-through charging is necessary. Do not begin with series cells, laptop-class PD, solar charging, or wireless charging unless you already understand battery-management design.
2. Inspect the cell and board
Confirm the cell’s polarity and condition. Confirm that the board is for one cell and that its charging voltage matches the cell chemistry. Verify whether protection is integrated and whether the USB-C connector is merely a 5V port.
3. Connect the battery
With power disconnected, connect exactly as marked:
Battery positive → B+ or BAT+
Battery negative → B− or BAT−
Do not connect a two-cell or three-cell pack to a single-cell board. Do not connect the battery to output terminals, bypass protection, or treat a bare cylindrical cell as a beginner soldering lug. A properly sized holder is the better starting point.
4. Inspect before powering
- Look for solder bridges and exposed conductors.
- Confirm polarity against the documentation.
- Check that USB pins are not shorted.
- Ensure the cell cannot move or rub against the PCB.
- Keep conductive enclosure parts away from battery terminals.
5. Test the output without an expensive device
Connect the cell, measure the USB output, and confirm that it is within the documented range. Test with a low-value USB load or electronic load first. Increase current gradually while watching voltage sag and temperature. Stop immediately for abnormal heat, smell, swelling, smoke, intermittent behavior, or unusual noise.
Do not make a phone, laptop, Raspberry Pi, or other valuable device the first test load.

Use the specified USB source. Observe charge current, status indicators, battery temperature, and whether the output changes or becomes unstable during charging. Some designs disable output while charging; others support load sharing. Do not assume simultaneous charging and use is safe or efficient. Adafruit documents flicker, sleep behavior, and substantial losses for some commercial power-bank designs, while its bq25185 charger documentation provides an example of a six-hour safety timeout.

7. Install the enclosure
Secure the cell so it cannot slide, puncture, or crush. Add strain relief to cables. Keep the battery away from hot regulators and allow heat to escape. Do not seal a high-power converter in a tiny airtight enclosure. Do not charge or operate a DIY lithium pack on a bed, sofa, lap, or other combustible surface.
Capacity: why the USB output is lower than the label
Battery capacity is commonly printed in milliamp-hours, but the useful USB capacity depends on energy and conversion losses:
Battery energy (Wh) = capacity (Ah) × nominal voltage
For a 2,600mAh cell:
2.6Ah × 3.6V = 9.36Wh
At an assumed 85% boost-conversion efficiency:
9.36Wh × 0.85 = 7.96Wh at the output
7.96Wh ÷ 5V ≈ 1.59Ah at USB output
That approximate 1,590mAh is reduced further by wiring, protection losses, cutoff thresholds, cable resistance, temperature, and the connected device. Cell mAh is not USB-output mAh, and actual efficiency changes with load and battery voltage.
USB-C, fast charging, and higher power
USB-C input
A USB-C connector may simply accept power to charge the cell. Confirm the board’s expected source behavior and input voltage.
USB-C 5V output
A USB-C receptacle can provide basic 5V without offering higher-voltage PD profiles or proprietary fast charging. Confirm the required source-identification circuitry and cable behavior.
USB-C Power Delivery
PD output requires negotiated voltage and current profiles. A board such as SparkFun’s USB-C Power Delivery board is an advanced configurable PD controller, not a complete power bank: it does not by itself provide the cell, charger, boost converter, enclosure, and complete battery protection.
For laptops or other high-power devices, begin with a complete documented PD-capable architecture. A basic 5V boost module with a USB-C connector is not a laptop charger.

Other architectures
| Design | Appropriate use | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Single cell plus integrated board | Beginner projects and modest 5V loads | Limited output; module quality varies |
| LiPo pouch cell | Thin custom enclosures | More vulnerable to puncture and swelling |
| Parallel cells | More capacity at roughly one-cell voltage | Requires matched cells, secure interconnects, and protection |
| Series pack | Higher system voltage and power | Needs a compatible charger, balancing, and BMS |
| Solar-assisted system | Outdoor or off-grid use | Variable input and more complex power-path management |
| Commercial power bank | Routine phone charging and travel | Less customizable |
A two-cell series pack is not simply a larger 3.7V battery. It requires a charger and BMS for the exact series count, cell balancing, and a converter designed for the higher voltage. Parallel packs also need matched cells and appropriate protection; unequal state of charge can create damaging balancing currents.

Troubleshooting
No USB output
Disconnect the load and measure the battery. Check polarity, the enable button, protection status, and whether the battery is below the board’s startup threshold. Some modules sleep or require a button press. Recharge using the specified input and test with a known-compatible load.
Voltage collapses under load
The converter may be overloaded, thermally limiting, or receiving inadequate current from a weak cell, poor holder, thin wire, or bad connector. Reduce the load, improve contacts, or use a converter and cell with suitable continuous ratings. Never bypass protection.
A phone repeatedly starts and stops charging
Possible causes include voltage sag, inadequate current, poor cable quality, missing USB identification circuitry, protocol incompatibility, or low-load sleep behavior. A no-load 5V reading does not prove compatibility with a phone.

The board fails while charging and powering a device
Unless the documentation explicitly supports power-path management or load sharing, the charger may misread the current, the output may flicker, or the battery may charge and discharge simultaneously. Use a board designed for this operating mode.
The battery becomes hot
Stop charging and using it immediately. A hot cell may indicate a short, overcurrent, overcharge, damaged or counterfeit cell, incorrect charger, or internal failure. Do not continue testing to see whether it cools. Keep people and combustible materials away if this can be done safely, and follow local emergency and hazardous-waste guidance.
When buying is the better decision
Buy a complete commercial power bank for routine phone charging, family use, travel, unattended operation, laptop charging, or high-wattage loads. Buy a documented integrated maker power-bank board when you want a project-specific 5V supply without designing every battery-management stage.
Build from separate charger, protection, and converter stages only when customization or learning justifies the added risk. For context, a documented maker product such as Adafruit’s 5,000mAh USB power bank is intended for 5V projects, while a product such as SparkFun’s 10,000mAh battery pack is a ready-made alternative. Product specifications and availability can change, so verify current documentation before purchasing.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not describe a DIY build as certified merely because it uses a protection IC. Safety standards such as UL 1642, UL 2743, and UL 62133 apply to particular products and configurations, not automatically to a home-assembled pack. Relevant standards are listed by the CPSC.
