The project, now called the Australian Hockey Centre, is at Curtin University’s Bentley campus. Its scope and funding grew after the approval-era proposal: the WA Government announced a $163 million commitment in May 2025, and construction commenced on 26 February 2026. Government material gives April 2029 as the expected completion date.
What was approved in May 2025?
The development application approved by the WA Planning Commission on 7 May 2025 proposed demolishing the existing Perth Hockey Stadium and replacing it with a three-storey stadium. The approval-era plan described 1,000 fixed seats, changing rooms, a kitchen, a bar and function rooms for club and community competitions and events. The Commission’s approval was reported on 7 May 2025; the Town of Victoria Park’s planning-report material is summarized in PerthNow’s approval-era coverage.
Consultation concerns
PerthNow reported that 15 submissions objected during consultation, with concerns focused primarily on the loss of 107 trees. Those figures describe the objections reported in that approval-era coverage; they do not establish the full range of community views or reproduce the complete submissions. PerthNow’s report
How the project changed after approval
After Perth secured Hockey Australia’s High Performance Program, the State Government announced an expanded project. Its May 2025 description added a fourth full-sized pitch and a children’s playing pitch, alongside a specialist high-performance training facility and an indoor hockey centre. The later scope also describes four outdoor fields, modern broadcast capabilities and a main stadium able to accommodate 10,000 spectators in event mode. The WA Government’s scope and funding announcement and its Australian Hockey Centre project information describe the expanded plan.

The seat and capacity figures are different measures from different project descriptions: the approval-era figure refers to fixed seats, while the later government figure refers to event-mode attendance. They should not be read as a like-for-like change in fixed seating.
What the Australian Hockey Centre is intended to do
The centre is intended to bring elite and community hockey together, host school programs and major national and international tournaments, and provide a permanent base for Hockey Australia’s high-performance program. Government material says Perth secured the Hockey Australia High Performance Program for 18 years. A separate planning report describes the bid as securing the program in Perth for more than 40 years. These are distinct statements, and the 18-year hosting term should not be presented as a 40-year commitment. Government statement; Planning report
