Neither material is automatically better for a facade. Perforated metal is a sheet punched with a specified hole pattern; expanded metal is a sheet cut and stretched into an interconnected mesh. Choose between them by comparing the actual opening geometry and open area, alloy, gauge or thickness, finish, panel dimensions, edge treatment, fabrication, and attachment to the supporting structure. Supplier literature confirms facade and sunscreen applications for both, but it does not establish a universal cost, durability, solar-control, structural, acoustic, or code-compliance winner.

What is the difference between perforated and expanded metal?

The distinction starts with manufacturing. A perforated panel remains a sheet with openings punched or otherwise pierced into it. An expanded panel starts as a solid sheet that is slit and stretched, turning the original material into a continuous mesh. The process affects the shape of the openings, the visual rhythm, the way the panel carries loads, and how much material remains around each opening.

Those category names are not performance specifications. Two products sold as perforated metal can have very different hole sizes, pitches, thicknesses, alloys, finishes, and open-area percentages. Expanded mesh likewise changes with the original sheet, strand dimensions, opening size, orientation, and finished panel configuration. A facade decision therefore has to be made from the exact product drawing and assembly details, not from the label alone.

How perforated metal is made

Perforated metal is sheet stock with a selected pattern of openings. Supplier descriptions identify round, square, slotted, hexagonal, and decorative patterns, with hole size and spacing selected for the application. The sheet can be supplied in different materials, gauges, and finishes and can be cut or fabricated into facade panels or sunscreen components.

Because each opening is defined independently, the designer can tune the pattern for appearance, screening, and the desired balance of solid surface and void. The finished look can be highly regular or decorative, but the exact sightline and transmission characteristics depend on the selected pattern and how the panels are mounted.

How expanded metal is made

Expanded metal is cut and stretched from one sheet, producing a regular mesh with connected strands. Direct Metals’ industrial glossary describes it as “a type of sheet metal that has been cut and stretched to form a regular pattern of metal mesh-like material.” The architectural expanded-sheet descriptions identify diamond-shaped openings and facade and sunscreen uses.

Since the strands remain part of one continuous sheet, the panel has no separate wire intersections to weld. That does not, by itself, establish a structural rating or make every expanded panel suitable for a particular cladding support system. The finished panel still needs an engineered frame, perimeter treatment, and attachment appropriate to its dimensions and exposure.

Where each material is used on a facade

Supplier pages identify perforated metal for exterior cladding and sunscreens. Expanded metal is also identified for building facades and sunscreens. These are potential applications, not a guarantee that an unmodified catalog sheet is a complete rainscreen, guard, balcony screen, or code-compliant facade assembly.

  • Exterior visual screens: Both materials can create a semi-transparent outer layer in front of walls, balconies, equipment, or service areas. The view from inside and outside must be checked with the actual pattern and viewing angle.
  • Solar-screen elements: Both can be specified as a secondary screen, but solar-control performance depends on open area, orientation, projection, color, glazing behind the screen, and local sun angles. The cited material does not provide a universal shading coefficient for either category.
  • Cladding or rainscreen skins: A panel may be part of a larger facade assembly. Water management, drainage, cavity ventilation, fire performance, thermal movement, and attachment must be designed for the complete assembly rather than inferred from the metal pattern.
  • Decorative facade features: Perforated patterns offer many hole shapes and layouts; expanded mesh supplies a characteristic diamond pattern. Samples or full-size mockups are more reliable than a small catalog image for judging appearance.

Open area: the number that must be compared carefully

Open area is the percentage of a panel occupied by openings. It influences how much light and air can pass through and how much solid metal remains visible, but it is only one input to facade performance. The same nominal open area can look different when the openings are round, square, slotted, or diamond-shaped, and when the panel is viewed obliquely.

One Direct Metals specification sheet lists 56% open area for a specific perforated stainless-steel sheet with 3/8-inch square openings on 1/2-inch straight centers in 16 gauge. That is a manufacturer value for that exact hole shape, size, pitch, and sheet. It is not a typical value for all perforated metal and cannot be used as an expanded-metal benchmark.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Open-area percentage and the calculation basis.
  • Opening dimensions, center-to-center spacing, and orientation.
  • Sheet thickness or gauge and, for expanded mesh, strand width and thickness.
  • Panel width, length, margins, and any unperforated or unexpanded borders.
  • Whether the stated value applies to the raw sheet or the finished panel after trimming, framing, or edging.

Do not infer that a more open-looking panel automatically provides more ventilation. Frame members, folded edges, overlap, stand-off distance, and the angle of airflow can reduce the effective free area of the installed screen.

How light, air, and sound differ in practice

Light transmission and appearance

Perforated metal is described by its supplier as filtering solids and diffusing light, air, and sound. Expanded metal is described as allowing passage of light, air, heat, and sound. These statements explain the intended function of the openings, not a measured transmission value for a finished facade.

Pattern geometry changes the visual result. A perforated sheet can present a calmer field of repeated dots, slots, or squares. Expanded mesh creates a directional diamond pattern whose apparent density changes with viewing angle and panel orientation. Darker finishes, backlighting, interior surfaces, and the distance to the wall behind the screen also alter perceived transparency.

Air movement

Both products can be used where some air passage is desired, but airflow through a screen is not determined by open area alone. The opening shape, panel depth, wind direction, surrounding frame, and pressure difference all matter. If the screen is intended to ventilate a plant area, car park, or rainscreen cavity, obtain the free-area and pressure-drop information required by the mechanical or facade engineer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sound and heat

The supplier descriptions mention diffusion or passage of sound and, for expanded metal, heat. They do not establish a sound-transmission class, insertion loss, thermal resistance, or heat-rejection value. A metal screen should not be credited with acoustic or thermal performance beyond the project-specific test or calculation for the complete assembly.

Material, gauge, finish, and corrosion decisions

Perforated supplier listings include aluminum, stainless steel, galvanized steel, carbon steel, and other material options. Expanded metal is likewise available in project-dependent material and fabrication choices. Select the alloy and finish for the exposure, cleaning regime, adjacent materials, and required appearance; do not select by pattern alone.

Alloy and thickness

Thicker sheet or heavier gauge can change stiffness, weight, edge behavior, and attachment requirements. A lighter panel may simplify handling but need more perimeter framing or intermediate supports. The cited information does not provide span tables or allowable loads, so the engineer responsible for the facade must verify the selected thickness against wind, maintenance, vibration, and impact conditions.

Finish and exposure

Finish selection affects color, reflectance, weathering, and compatibility with fasteners and framing. Galvanized, carbon-steel, aluminum, and stainless components do not have identical corrosion behavior, especially where dissimilar metals contact one another or where salts, pollutants, or trapped moisture are present. Require the fabricator to identify the finish system and any limitations for the project environment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Edges and perimeter treatment

Perforated panels may require folded returns, welded frames, or other edge reinforcement. Expanded-sheet suppliers identify U-edging as an accessory for expanded sheet. The edge condition affects handling, visual alignment, stiffness, and how the panel connects to clips or rails. Include the edge profile and corner treatment in the shop drawing rather than leaving them to field fabrication.

Attachment and panelization: the part that turns sheet into a facade

A catalog panel is not an engineered facade assembly. The support rails, clips, fasteners, stand-offs, gaskets, joints, and drainage path determine how the screen behaves under wind and thermal movement. Attachment also changes the visible open area: a broad frame or overlapping joint can cover a significant portion of the nominal openings.

Ask for a panelization plan showing maximum panel dimensions, support spacing, joint widths, orientation, and access for replacement. Confirm how the system accommodates thermal expansion, how water drains, and how dissimilar metals are isolated. The engineer should check the supporting wall or frame as well as the metal screen; a strong panel cannot compensate for an under-designed substrate or connection.

Which material is better for a specific facade goal?

Choose perforated metal when pattern control is the priority

Perforated metal is the more direct starting point when the design depends on a defined hole shape, a custom graphic pattern, or a deliberately calculated open area. Round, square, slotted, hexagonal, and decorative options allow the elevation to be tuned to a visual concept. Confirm that the selected spacing leaves enough margin for cutting, fastening, and edge strength.

Choose expanded metal when a continuous diamond mesh is desired

Expanded metal is the natural candidate when the design calls for a connected, diamond-pattern screen made by cutting and stretching one sheet. Its mesh character can provide a strong texture and directional reading across a facade. Verify orientation, strand dimensions, panel flatness, perimeter edging, and the way the mesh is tensioned or supported.

When neither can be selected from a label

If the primary requirement is a measured ventilation rate, solar-control value, acoustic result, structural capacity, fire classification, or code acceptance, neither category name answers the question. Require data for the exact panel and its installation, then have the appropriate facade, structural, fire, or mechanical professional review it.

A practical selection procedure

  1. Define the facade function. State whether the screen is decorative, a sunscreen, a privacy layer, a ventilating enclosure, an outer cladding layer, or a combination. Record viewing directions and maintenance access.
  2. Set the visual target. Choose the desired opening shape or mesh pattern, orientation, color, reflectance, and approximate transparency. Review physical samples at the intended viewing distance and with the backing wall or glazing visible.
  3. Set the transmission requirement. Establish the required open area or free area and identify whether light, air, heat, or sound is the controlling criterion. Do not substitute a generic percentage for a project requirement.
  4. Choose the material and thickness. Specify alloy, gauge or thickness, finish, and exposure conditions. Include compatibility requirements for rails, fasteners, flashings, and adjacent cladding.
  5. Develop the panel and edge details. Define panel dimensions, margins, folded returns, U-edging or frames, corners, joints, and replacement access. Ask the fabricator to identify any limits on size or pattern near edges.
  6. Engineer the attachment. Check wind and other project loads, support spacing, thermal movement, substrate capacity, drainage, and corrosion isolation. Treat the screen and its support as one assembly.
  7. Compare quotations on the same basis. Request material, finish, fabrication, edging, framing, fasteners, delivery, installation, and engineering as separate line items so that a low sheet price is not mistaken for a lower installed cost.
  8. Approve a representative mockup. Use the actual pattern, finish, joints, frame, and backing condition. Review transparency, glare, shadows, alignment, and maintenance access before releasing production.

Information to include in a specification or quote request

  • Facade location, orientation, height, and exposure conditions.
  • Perforated or expanded pattern, opening dimensions, orientation, and target open area.
  • Alloy, gauge or thickness, finish, color, and corrosion environment.
  • Panel sizes, margins, tolerances, edge profiles, corners, and U-edging or framing requirements.
  • Support layout, attachment method, fastener material, stand-off, joints, and movement allowances.
  • Required submittals: product data, shop drawings, finish samples, calculations, installation instructions, and maintenance guidance.
  • Any project-specific requirements for fire, wind, impact, ventilation, acoustics, glare, or solar control.

This information lets a supplier or custom fabricator price the same scope and lets the design team compare products without hiding differences in panelization or attachment.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Using a category average for open area

There is no single open-area value for perforated metal or expanded mesh. Use the exact product calculation or certification, including borders and framing where relevant.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming a supplier application list is an approval

A page that lists facades or sunscreens shows an intended use, not compliance with a particular building code or project specification. Obtain the required engineering and documentation for the jurisdiction.

Comparing sheet prices instead of installed systems

Pattern, alloy, finish, cutting, edging, frames, clips, access equipment, and installation can change the total cost. The cited material contains no comparable installed-price study, so a universal cheaper option cannot be stated.

Ignoring the backing condition

The wall, glazing, insulation, or equipment behind the screen affects privacy, perceived transparency, heat buildup, and shadowing. Evaluate the complete elevation at representative sun angles and interior lighting conditions.

Leaving edges and joints until fabrication

Unplanned borders can reduce effective open area and create visible misalignment. Show the perimeter, corners, joints, and attachment zones on the elevation and shop drawings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Treating the screen as self-supporting

Neither a perforated sheet nor an expanded mesh label supplies a structural capacity. Verify spans, supports, connections, and substrate loads for the actual geometry and exposure.

What the available evidence can and cannot establish

The cited supplier and specification material supports the manufacturing distinction, the facade and sunscreen applications, the broad descriptions of light and air passage, the available pattern and material choices, and the one 56% open-area example for a defined perforated stainless sheet.

It does not establish which material costs less when installed, lasts longer in a defined climate, gives better solar control, satisfies a particular code, or performs better acoustically or structurally in a specific facade assembly. Those outcomes depend on geometry, alloy, finish, framing, attachment, exposure, and jurisdiction. Treat them as project questions requiring comparable quotations and professional review rather than as properties of the category name.

Decision checklist

  • Is the required pattern clearly defined: punched holes or diamond mesh?
  • Do both candidates have product-specific open-area data?
  • Are light, air, heat, sound, privacy, and glare requirements stated separately?
  • Are alloy, gauge or thickness, finish, and exposure compatible?
  • Are panel dimensions, borders, edges, joints, and orientation documented?
  • Has the attachment and supporting structure been engineered?
  • Are finish samples and a representative mockup approved?
  • Are quotations comparing the same fabrication, framing, installation, and engineering scope?
