A peace lily (Spathiphyllum) is a tropical houseplant that does best in bright, indirect light, evenly moist—but not soggy—soil, and a pot that drains. Brown tips, yellow leaves, and drooping can each have more than one cause, so check the plant’s growing conditions before changing its care. Peace lilies are toxic to cats and dogs if chewed, though they are not the same kind of lily as the true lilies that can cause severe kidney injury in cats.
What is a peace lily?
Peace lily is the common name for plants in the genus Spathiphyllum, a group in the Araceae family. It is a tropical, evergreen perennial commonly grown indoors—not a true lily in the genus Lilium. Its glossy, dark-green leaves grow around a distinctive flower structure: a white, leaf-like spathe surrounding a central spadix. It is also called white sails or spathe flower. North Carolina Cooperative Extension and South Dakota State University Extension describe its origins somewhat differently, so a more specific native range is not necessary to identify or care for a household plant.
How do I care for a peace lily?
Choose indirect light
Place it in bright, indirect light, such as near an east-facing window with morning sun or a north-facing window. Peace lilies tolerate shade, but protect them from strong direct sun, which can scorch leaves. Avoid choosing a very dark spot if you want steady growth.
Keep it warm and away from drafts
Keep the plant in a warm, stable room and away from cold windows, exterior doors, or heating and cooling vents. Recommended ranges vary by source: North Carolina Cooperative Extension gives warm daytime conditions of 68–85°F and warns that prolonged temperatures below 40°F can damage the plant; South Dakota State University Extension recommends 65–80°F and avoiding temperatures at or below 55°F. These are source-specific care recommendations, not a single sharp threshold.

Water by checking the soil
Keep the potting mix moist but not waterlogged, and let it dry somewhat between waterings. South Dakota State University Extension puts it plainly: “The soil should be kept moist, but not soggy.” Its care guide, updated April 25, 2024, does not prescribe a universal calendar, and watering needs depend on conditions such as light, temperature, and pot size. Check the soil rather than watering automatically on a weekly schedule.
Use a well-drained potting mix and a container with drainage holes. Empty excess water from the saucer or outer pot; leaving the roots standing in water encourages problems. South Dakota State University Extension recommends room-temperature water that has sat overnight, but its guidance is not a requirement for every household.

Feed modestly and repot when needed
Use a light hand with fertilizer. North Carolina Cooperative Extension recommends applying it at one-quarter strength and flushing the soil between applications; excess fertilizer and salt buildup can burn roots and leaf tips. South Dakota State University Extension recommends feeding in spring and summer and notes a preference for organic fertilizer. Neither source supports treating heavy feeding as a shortcut to healthy growth.
There is no fixed repotting schedule. Check for roots emerging from drainage holes or circling at the soil surface, signs South Dakota State University Extension identifies as rootbound growth. Repot when the plant needs more room rather than by the calendar. Indoor plants commonly reach about 3 feet tall and wide, according to North Carolina Cooperative Extension, though size varies by cultivar and conditions. That source describes ‘Gemini’ as compact at up to about 12 inches, ‘Domino’ at 1–3 feet, and ‘Sensation’ at over 5 feet; these are cultivar descriptions, not guaranteed indoor dimensions.

How often should I water my peace lily?
Water when the mix has begun to dry somewhat, not according to a fixed number of days. Feel the soil and consider how quickly the pot dries in its current spot: brighter light, warmer conditions, or a smaller pot can change how often it needs water. Water thoroughly, then let excess drain away. The target is moist soil without standing water.

Leaf symptoms are clues, not diagnoses. Check soil moisture, drainage, light exposure, and recent fertilizer use before deciding what to change.

- About the Plant: Peace Lily, scientific name: Spathiphyllum, is a low-maintenance and popular houseplant. It displays vibrant green leaves and bright white blooms that give off a sweet scent. Peace Lilies make perfect home decor and look beautiful sitting on a windowsill, end table, or bookshelf.
- Air Purifying: Houseplants are well known to be a healthy addition to your home due to their natural air purifying qualities. Many houseplants, including Peace Lilies, have been identified by NASA as able to filter toxins out of the air, allowing you to breathe easy!
- Low Light: Peace Lilies are one of the best plants to grow in an area of low light! They do extremely well with minimal light. A dark corner of a bedroom or hallway is a perfect placement option for a Peace Lily.
- Plant Size: Choose from a 4-inch or 6-inch diameter plant. Height will vary by plant based on pot size. Plant may or may not have blooms at time of shipping. Please note that you will not receive the plant in the photos as each plant is unique.
- Pot: Plant arrives in a 4-inch diameter growers pot made of plastic. This pot has drainage holes and may vary in color. No decorative pot included.
- Brown tips: Possible causes include strong direct sun, underwatering, low humidity, and overfertilizing. Check for sun exposure and whether the soil is drying too far or staying wet; consider recent feeding as well.
- Yellow leaves: Both overwatering and underwatering can contribute. Older leaves may also yellow when the plant has not been repotted for some time. Check the soil and drainage before increasing or reducing water.
- Drooping: A plant short of water may droop, but overwatering can also lead to root and stem diseases. Check the soil before watering; drooping alone does not establish which problem is present.
Mealybugs are among the indoor pests noted by North Carolina Cooperative Extension; South Dakota State University Extension also lists scale and fungus gnats. Inspect leaves and stems if you see pests or unexplained decline.
Are peace lilies toxic to cats or dogs?
Yes. The ASPCA lists peace lily (Spathiphyllum) as toxic to cats and dogs. Its toxic principle is insoluble calcium oxalates. Chewing can cause mouth irritation or intense burning, drooling, vomiting, and difficulty swallowing. Keep pets from chewing the plant; contact a veterinarian or ASPCA Poison Control if you suspect ingestion.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe name can cause confusion, but a peace lily is not a true lily. The ASPCA distinguishes Spathiphyllum from true lilies (Lilium) and daylilies (Hemerocallis). Peace lily chewing can cause oral pain, drooling, vomiting, or diarrhea; serious or life-threatening problems are very rare. By contrast, small amounts of Lilium can cause severe kidney injury in cats, and the ASPCA advises avoiding Lilium and Hemerocallis around cats. That difference does not make peace lilies safe to chew.
