The right paver patio combines a layout and material that suit your home, yard, and planned activities. Compare pattern, color, texture, and features with the site’s grade and drainage before choosing a design; ideas are starting points, not one-size-fits-all solutions.
Belgard’s design guidance notes that paver shapes and installation patterns should complement a home’s architecture. Its installation guide gives a standard interlocking-pavement assembly, but specific systems and site conditions may call for different details. The ideas below draw on manufacturer design and installation guidance, not a set of independently tested patios.
Choose a Patio Direction
Use this comparison to narrow down ideas before selecting individual pavers. These are design considerations, not universal performance or cost guarantees.
| Design consideration | Options to compare | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Home and landscape | Simple contemporary forms; brick-shaped or cobbled units; patterns that echo architectural details | Coordinate paver shape and pattern with the house and surrounding landscape. |
| Patio scale | Traditional patterns for smaller areas; modular layouts or rectangular grids for larger areas | Consider how the pattern reads across the available space. |
| Activity | Dining, conversation, cooking, pool use, or circulation | Place features and seating to suit the activity and leave useful routes through the space. |
| Color and texture | Monochromatic or blended colors; smooth, stone-like, or wood-like finishes | Consider sunlight, existing finishes, and the surface appearance you want. |
| Grade and water | At-grade, terraced, permeable, or mixed pavers with gravel or planting | Match the design and installation system to site conditions and water flow. |

26. Poolside Paver Deck
Consider color, texture, pattern, and surface suitability when planning pavers around a pool. Belgard highlights these considerations in its product description, including slip resistance; treat that as manufacturer information, not an independent comparison.
27. Pavers With Gravel
Combine pavers and gravel to vary surface texture and soften a hardscape edge. Belgard includes gravel among the natural materials that can complement a patio.
28. Pavers With Ornamental Grasses
Use ornamental grasses beside or between suitable paving areas to bring planting into the design. Consider how the planting fits the intended use and landscape.
29. Pavers With Ground Cover
Pair paving with ground cover for a softer transition to the garden. Choose the layout with the use of the space and the site conditions in mind.
30. Grass-Filled Grid Pavers
Grid systems can combine pavers with grass. Belgard describes grid systems as an option alongside permeable-paver designs; check that the selected system suits the intended use and site.

31. Permeable Paver Patio
Permeable paver systems use permeable joints over underlying aggregate. Belgard presents them as an option for managing rainwater and runoff; confirm that the system is appropriate for the specific site and follow product guidance.
32. Pavers With Permeable Joints
Consider a jointed layout intended for water to pass through into an underlying aggregate system. It is a system choice, not just a surface pattern, so check its product-specific installation requirements.
33. Standard Interlocking-Pavement Assembly
For the standard interlocking-pavement assembly covered in Belgard’s 2025 installation guide, the illustrated sequence is compacted subgrade, optional geotextile as needed, compacted aggregate base, a nominal one-inch bedding layer, pavers, jointing sand, and edge restraint. The guide lists a minimum four-inch base and minimum 2 3/8-inch paver thickness for pedestrian applications, and a minimum 2% surface slope for drainage. These are scoped manufacturer guide figures, not universal specifications: the guide says base depth depends on conditions and excludes permeable pavers, slabs, concrete grid, and tumbled pavers from these guidelines.

34. Patio Over Existing Concrete
An overlay over existing concrete requires attention to drainage and the condition of the base. Belgard’s overlay guidance warns that major cracks can compromise an installation and describes drainage holes for certain sand-set overlay details. Do not treat an overlay as a universal shortcut.
35. Patio With a Defined Drainage Plan
Plan how water moves through or away from the patio before settling on a design. Belgard’s installation guidance describes pitching the base away from the house and compacting aggregate in lifts; check the chosen product’s instructions and assess site conditions rather than assuming one detail suits every project.
Installation Considerations
Belgard’s general installation guidance describes excavation, compacted aggregate, bedding sand, pavers, and jointing material. It also describes using a compactor for joint infill and says polymeric sand helps lock pavers and resist debris and weeds. Follow the chosen system’s product instructions and have site-specific conditions assessed where needed.
For a standard interlocking-pavement assembly, the Belgard 2025 guide’s illustrated minimums are a four-inch base for patios and pedestrian applications, a nominal one-inch bedding layer, a minimum 2 3/8-inch paver thickness for pedestrian applications, and a minimum 2% surface slope for drainage. The guide notes that base depth depends on conditions and excludes permeable pavers, slabs, concrete grid, and tumbled pavers from those guidelines.
Local requirements and site conditions are not established by the design sources. Check applicable requirements and product-specific instructions, especially for projects involving grade changes or additional structures and features.
FAQ
What paver pattern works best for a small patio?
There is no single best pattern for every space. Belgard documents traditional patterns and modular layouts; compare the paver shape and pattern with the patio’s scale and the home’s architecture.
How can I make a paver patio look bigger?
Belgard says lighter colors can open a space visually. A diagonal or horizontal layout may also be considered as a visual design direction, but the effect is not a measured guarantee.
Can I mix pavers with gravel or grass?
Yes, these are documented design directions: Belgard describes paver-and-gravel combinations and grid systems combining pavers with grass. Check that the selected layout and system suit the site and intended use.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHow should a paver patio handle rainwater?
Choose a drainage approach that suits the site. Belgard presents permeable-paver systems with underlying aggregate as one runoff-management option, and its standard installation guidance specifies a minimum 2% surface slope for drainage. That figure applies to the guide’s illustrated standard assembly, not every paver system or site.
Can I put pavers over existing concrete?
An overlay depends on the existing concrete and drainage. Belgard warns that major cracks can compromise an installation and describes drainage holes for certain sand-set overlay details. Check the existing base and the specific overlay guidance before choosing this approach.
Does one installation specification work for every paver?
No. Belgard’s 2025 standard interlocking-pavement guide excludes permeable pavers, slabs, concrete grid, and tumbled pavers from its stated guidelines, and says base depth depends on conditions. Follow product-specific guidance and consider the site.
