Laundry symbols are a compact set of instructions: the tub covers washing, the triangle covers bleaching, the square covers drying, the iron covers pressing, and the circle covers professional textile care. Read the shape first, then check its dots, bars, numbers, letters, or cross.

The most important rule is that a care symbol states the maximum treatment the garment is expected to withstand without irreversible damage. It is not a command to use the hottest temperature or strongest cycle available. When in doubt, choose a gentler method—and follow the entire tag, not just the fiber name or one familiar symbol.

The five laundry-symbol families at a glance

Most modern care labels arrange instructions from left to right in this sequence:

  1. Washing: a washtub
  2. Bleaching: a triangle
  3. Drying: a square, sometimes containing a circle
  4. Ironing: an iron
  5. Professional care: a circle
Base shape What it controls Modifiers to look for
Washtub Whether and how the item may be washed Temperature number, hand, dots, bars, cross
Triangle Whether bleach may be used Empty, striped, or crossed out
Square How the item may be dried Circle, dots, lines, corner marks, cross
Iron Whether and how the item may be ironed Dots, steam restriction, cross
Circle Professional dry cleaning or wet cleaning Letters, bars, cross

Illustration suggestion: A five-panel reference graphic can show the washing tub, bleach triangle, drying square, iron, and professional-care circle. A second panel can show that more dots generally mean more heat, while more bars mean gentler mechanical action. Detailed artwork should identify whether it represents the ISO/international or ASTM/U.S. system, because the systems are similar but not perfectly interchangeable.

How dots, bars, numbers, and crosses work

Dots usually indicate heat

In the common symbol logic, more dots mean more heat. One dot indicates a low-heat setting, two dots medium heat, and three dots high heat. The exact permitted temperature depends on the symbol family and labeling system, so treat dots as a limit rather than a reason to select the highest setting automatically.

Bars indicate gentler action

One bar beneath a washtub or professional-care circle means a reduced or gentler process. Two bars mean a very mild process. In practical terms, that can mean choosing a delicate cycle, reducing mechanical agitation, avoiding a crowded drum, or using a gentler professional process.

A cross means “do not use this treatment”

A cross over a symbol prohibits the treatment represented by that symbol. A crossed-out washtub means do not wash. A crossed-out triangle means do not bleach. A crossed-out iron means do not iron.

Do not automatically invent a replacement method. For example, a crossed-out tumble-drying symbol tells you not to tumble dry, but it does not by itself say whether the garment should be line dried, drip dried, or dried flat. Look for a separate natural-drying symbol or written instruction.

Washing symbols: tubs, temperatures, and hand washing

Washtub with a temperature number

A number inside the tub gives the maximum washing temperature. In the ISO/GINETEX system, the number is in degrees Celsius. A tub marked 30 means wash at no more than 30°C; 40 means no more than 40°C; and so on.

Because the number is a ceiling, washing below it is generally the less aggressive choice. A 40°C maximum does not require a 40°C cycle. A cold or cool cycle may better protect dark dyes, elastic, finishes, and shrink-prone fabric when it still cleans the item adequately.

Washtub with a hand

A hand inside the tub means hand wash. It does not mean “use a gentle machine cycle.” Hand washing normally involves limited agitation, careful handling, and rinsing without twisting or wringing the garment aggressively.

Use the detergent instructions as well as the garment label. A hand-wash label does not authorize every detergent, soaking time, or stain-treatment product.

Washtub with one bar

One bar beneath the tub indicates a reduced mechanical-action process. Select a gentle, delicate, or permanent-press program where appropriate, and avoid overloading the machine. The exact names differ between washers, so compare the machine’s behavior—agitation, spin, and load size—with the care instruction rather than relying only on the cycle name.

Washtub with two bars

Two bars indicate a very mild wash. This is a stronger warning to minimize agitation and mechanical stress. A small load, a suitable delicate cycle, and a low or reduced spin may be appropriate if the garment’s complete instructions permit machine washing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Crossed-out washtub

Do not wash the item in water. Do not assume that a short cold cycle is safe simply because the fabric is cotton, polyester, or another familiar fiber. Construction, dyes, trims, interlinings, coatings, and residual shrinkage can determine the instruction.

Bleaching symbols: triangle meanings

The triangle is the bleach family. Bleach instructions are especially important because an unsuitable product can cause permanent color loss or fiber damage.

Triangle appearance General meaning
Empty triangle Bleaching is permitted under the applicable labeling system and product directions.
Triangle with diagonal stripes Use only non-chlorine, oxygen bleach when needed.
Crossed-out triangle Do not bleach.

Never treat an empty triangle as permission to use any bleach in any concentration. Check the bleach product’s directions, dilution requirements, and fabric warnings. Where the label says “only non-chlorine bleach when needed,” chlorine bleach is not an acceptable substitute.

If the garment is marked “do not bleach,” do not try to compensate with a stronger detergent or an untested stain remover. For a questionable stain treatment, follow the product directions and test an inconspicuous area when those directions call for testing.

Drying symbols: tumble, line, drip, flat, and shade

Drying instructions use a square. A circle inside the square means tumble drying. A square without a circle describes natural drying.

Tumble-drying symbols

Symbol feature Meaning
Square with a circle Tumble drying is permitted, subject to any heat modifier.
One dot inside the circle Low tumble-dry heat.
Two dots inside the circle Medium tumble-dry heat.
Three dots inside the circle High tumble-dry heat.
Crossed-out square with a circle Do not tumble dry.

Even when tumble drying is allowed, a lower heat setting can be the safer practical choice for elastic, thin fabrics, printed garments, and items that tend to shrink. Remove clothing promptly when the cycle ends to reduce wrinkles and unnecessary heat exposure.

Natural-drying symbols

A square without a circle represents natural drying. Depending on the marks inside the square, it may specify one of these methods:

  • Line dry: hang the item to dry.
  • Drip dry: allow the item to dry while wet, usually without wringing or intensive spinning.
  • Dry flat: place it horizontally on a suitable surface to help retain its shape.
  • Dry in the shade: keep it out of direct sunlight, which can fade some dyes or affect sensitive materials.

“Do not tumble dry” and “dry flat” are not interchangeable instructions. A knit garment may stretch when hung even though hanging is convenient, while a structured garment may require a particular form of support. Follow the specific natural-drying symbol if one is provided.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For clothing marked line dry, drip dry, dry flat, or do not tumble dry, a folding drying rack can make the required method easier to follow. Choose a rack or drying surface that supports the garment without sharp edges, excessive stretching, or direct heat.

Ironing symbols: dots and steam restrictions

The iron symbol tells you whether pressing is permitted and how much heat may be used.

Iron modifier General meaning
One dot Low ironing temperature.
Two dots Medium ironing temperature.
Three dots High ironing temperature.
Crossed-out iron Do not iron.

Some labels include a steam-related mark or wording that restricts steam. If steam is prohibited, use a dry-iron setting if ironing is otherwise allowed. If the iron itself is crossed out, do not assume a garment steamer is a safe workaround: steaming and ironing permissions depend on the complete label and the material’s construction.

Start at the lowest permitted heat and increase only if necessary. Turn printed or coated surfaces according to the label’s instructions, and avoid placing a hot soleplate directly on embellishments or heat-sensitive finishes.

Professional-care symbols: circles, letters, and bars

A circle represents professional textile care. This can include dry cleaning or professional wet cleaning; it does not automatically mean ordinary home dry cleaning.

Letters inside the circle identify permitted solvent or process categories for the professional cleaner. Bars beneath the circle indicate a milder professional process. A crossed-out circle means do not professionally clean.

Do not try to decode a professional-care letter as though it were a household washing instruction. Give the complete label to the cleaner and point out stains, fragile trims, bonded parts, coatings, or previous damage. The professional-care symbol describes the permitted care category, not a guarantee that an old stain will disappear or that a weakened garment will remain unchanged.

Why the fiber name does not override the care label

“Cotton,” “wool,” “linen,” or “polyester” describes fiber content; it does not fully describe the finished garment. A cotton item may still be labeled professional-clean-only because washing could affect its buttons, trims, dyes, construction, or residual shrinkage.

In the United States, manufacturers and importers are expected to have a reasonable basis for their care instructions. That basis may include cleaning tests, evidence that a warned-against procedure causes damage, technical literature, prior experience, or industry expertise. The instruction applies to the garment as made, including components and trims—not simply to its main fiber.

That is why “cotton usually washes” is not a reason to ignore “do not wash” or “professional care only.” Follow the garment’s label when it conflicts with general fabric folklore.

U.S. and international care labels are similar, but not identical

Many international garments use the ISO 3758:2023 framework, associated with GINETEX care symbols. It covers washing, bleaching, drying, ironing, and professional textile care in that order.

U.S. labels may use written instructions or the ASTM symbol system. The Federal Trade Commission’s Care Labeling Rule permits symbol-only care labeling when the symbols meet the rule, and specifically recognizes ASTM D5489-96c for that purpose. ASTM’s current commercial guide is D5489-25, but that newer guide should not be described as automatically changing the federal rule.

The practical decoding method is still useful across systems: identify the base shape first, then interpret dots, bars, numbers, letters, and crosses. However, pay attention to the system and any words printed beside the symbols. In particular:

  • ISO/GINETEX wash numbers are Celsius.
  • U.S. consumer explanations may express temperature guidance with words or Fahrenheit-oriented descriptions.
  • Symbol details and professional-care conventions can differ between ASTM and ISO.
  • Written brand instructions may add information that the symbols do not supply.

A one-minute checklist before washing

  1. Photograph the entire tag before removing it. The symbols may be only one part of the instructions.
  2. Read left to right: wash, bleach, dry, iron, and professional care.
  3. Identify each base shape before interpreting its dots, lines, numbers, or letters.
  4. Look for crosses first. A crossed treatment is prohibited.
  5. Treat temperatures as maximums. Lower heat and gentler action are generally less aggressive.
  6. Check drying carefully. “Do not tumble dry,” “line dry,” “drip dry,” and “dry flat” have different meanings.
  7. Inspect the garment. Embellishments, trims, coatings, weak seams, age, and previous damage may make a normally permitted treatment risky.
  8. Follow both labels when using detergent, bleach, stain remover, or other laundry products.
  9. Protect small or delicate pieces. A mesh laundry bag for delicates can help contain small items and reduce snagging, but it does not make a prohibited cycle safe.
  10. When the instruction is unclear, stop. Keep the label photograph and ask the manufacturer or a qualified cleaner rather than guessing.

Quick-reference chart

What you see Decode it as Practical response
Tub Washing instruction Check hand/machine method, temperature, bars, and cross.
Number in tub Maximum Celsius wash temperature in ISO/GINETEX labeling Do not exceed the number; a cooler wash may be gentler.
Hand in tub Hand wash Do not substitute a machine cycle without reliable garment-specific guidance.
One or two bars under tub Reduced or very mild mechanical action Use a gentler cycle, smaller load, and reduced agitation where appropriate.
Triangle Bleaching instruction Check whether bleach is unrestricted, oxygen/non-chlorine only, or prohibited.
Square with circle Tumble drying Use the indicated heat level, if any.
Square without circle Natural drying Check for line, drip, flat, or shade instructions.
Crossed tumble symbol Do not tumble dry Use the separate natural-drying instruction if supplied.
Iron with dots Permitted ironing heat Stay at or below the indicated heat; check steam restrictions.
Circle with letters Professional-care process category Show the complete label to a professional cleaner.
Cross over any symbol That treatment is prohibited Do not infer an alternative unless the label provides one.

What laundry symbols cannot guarantee

Correctly decoding a label does not guarantee that a garment will look exactly as it did when new. Unusual stains, weakened fibers, age, prior damage, incorrect detergent, excessive agitation, and unsuitable stain treatments can still cause problems. Care symbols communicate the supported treatment limits for the garment as manufactured; they are not a promise against every possible change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The safest routine is simple: read the whole tag, stay below the stated limits, choose the gentlest effective process, and never use bleach, heat, steam, or a cleaning method that a cross prohibits.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do the five main laundry symbols mean?

The washtub means washing, the triangle means bleaching, the square means drying, the iron means ironing, and the circle means professional textile care such as dry cleaning or professional wet cleaning.

Do more dots mean a hotter setting?

Generally, yes. One dot means low heat, two means medium heat, and three means high heat. Treat the indicated level as a maximum and choose a lower setting when practical.

What does one or two bars under a wash symbol mean?

Bars indicate reduced mechanical action. One bar means a gentler process; two bars mean a very mild process. Use a suitable delicate cycle, avoid overloading, and minimize agitation.

Does a crossed-out tumble-dry symbol tell me how to dry the garment?

No. It only prohibits tumble drying. Look for a separate symbol or written instruction specifying line dry, drip dry, dry flat, or shade drying.

Can I ignore a dry-clean-only label if the garment is cotton?

No. The label applies to the finished garment, including trims, dyes, buttons, construction, coatings, and shrinkage risks. Follow the care label even when general fiber advice suggests another method.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: identify the symbol’s shape first, then read its modifiers. The tub, triangle, square, iron, and circle cover wash, bleach, dry, iron, and professional care; dots set heat, bars reduce mechanical or professional-process intensity, and crosses prohibit the treatment. Use the label as a maximum-treatment guide, follow accompanying words, and never substitute a guessed method for a crossed-out instruction.
