The best smart plug depends on your ecosystem and where you will use it. Choose the Kasa EP10 for straightforward indoor scheduling with Alexa or Google Assistant, the Tapo P125M for Matter and Apple Home compatibility, an energy-monitoring model such as the Kasa KP125M or Tapo P110M when consumption data matters, and a genuinely outdoor-rated plug for exposed locations.

Those recommendations begin with BGR’s September 2024 roundup, which says its reviewers tested nearly 100 smart plugs. They should not be mistaken for a fresh 2026 retest of every current model. Product generations, firmware, stock, compatibility, and prices change, so confirm the exact model number and current specifications before buying.

What a smart plug can—and cannot—do

A smart plug sits between a wall receptacle and an ordinary plug-in appliance. It can switch electrical power through an app, schedule, timer, remote command, voice assistant, or automation. That makes it useful for lamps, fans, humidifiers, holiday lights, some coffee makers, and other devices that begin operating automatically when power is restored.

#1 Best Overall
Govee Smart Plug, WiFi Outlet Compatible with Alexa & Google Assts, 4 pcs | Smart Home Plugs, 15A WiFi Outlet, Timer Function and Group Controller, No Hub Required, ETL & FCC Certified, 2.4G Only
  • Stability Upgrade: Supports Bluetooth or WiFi connection, which is more stable and faster than plugs that can only be connected through WiFi. No disconnection worries, control all your home appliances and devices anytime & anywhere.
  • Smart Voice Control: WiFi Plugs Work with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant, so you can control the smart home devices using simple voice commands. Free hands by using smart plugs and enjoy the funny interactive process. Note: Don't support 5G WiFi.
  • Scheduling & Group Controller: Create customized schedules to power your electronic appliances on/off automatically for helping save energy and money. And with a single tough of one button, you can manage multiple smart plugs simultaneously.
  • Multiple Safeguards & Small Size: With ETL & FCC certified, the quality of smart plug is assessed. Our product is rated: 10A, 1200W and support 120V. Compact and flexible design can save space, smart home plugs fit for every corner of your room.
  • Easy Install and Use: Download the Govee Home App and search for H5083, you can pair smart outlet successfully in minutes without barrier in smart home; share with your family on Govee app via phones so you can enjoy the smart life together.

It cannot press a physical power button. If an appliance remains off after being unplugged and reconnected, a smart plug will not make it reliably programmable. Test the exact appliance before depending on an automated schedule.

A smart plug also does not inherently save energy. It can reduce waste by switching equipment off on a schedule or showing how much electricity a device uses, but the connected appliance still determines its normal consumption.

Best overall for a simple indoor setup: Kasa EP10

BGR named the Kasa EP10 its overall pick after testing nearly 100 models. Its appeal is straightforward: a compact design, app control, schedules and timers, and support listed for Alexa, Google Assistant, and Samsung SmartThings. The official specifications list a 15-amp maximum load, up to 1,800 watts for general or resistive loads, and a 1/6-horsepower motor rating. The product page also lists UL certification and says the compact body is designed to preserve access to the neighboring receptacle.

The EP10 is a sensible choice for an indoor Alexa or Google household that wants dependable basic automation without paying for features it will not use. Its important limitation is equally clear: the official compatibility information does not list Matter or Apple Home. Apple households and mixed-platform homes should look at a current Matter model instead.

This is a historical recommendation based on the September 2024 BGR article, not a claim that the EP10 has been newly retested in 2026. Availability and pricing can also change.

Best Matter option: Tapo P125M

The Tapo P125M is the stronger specification-based choice for a household that uses Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home, Samsung SmartThings, or more than one of those platforms. Tapo lists it as Matter certified and says it can be added through Matter-compatible apps. It uses 2.4-GHz Wi-Fi, with Bluetooth used for setup, and supports schedules, timers, away mode, auto-off, remote control, and family sharing.

  • SIMPLE TO SET UP WITH ALEXA: Get started in minutes with multiple setup options, including a zero touch experience when you select "Link device to your Alexa account" at checkout
  • CONTROL FROM ANYWHERE: Schedule plugged-in appliances like lights or fans to turn on/off automatically, or control them remotely via the Alexa app when you’re away
  • COMPACT DESIGN: The plug fits perfectly into 1 socket, leaving remaining sockets and outlets free for use; ideal for multiple appliances like holiday lighting, heaters, fans, lamps, water kettles, coffee makers, and more
  • CUSTOMIZE ROUTINES: Schedule your smart plug to turn on/off either at designated times, with a voice command, or even at sunrise and sunset
  • NO 3RD PARTY APPS OR HUBS REQUIRED: Set up and manage connected devices directly in the Alexa app; no need for additional smart hubs or 3rd party apps

Matter can make changing ecosystems easier, but it is not a guarantee of identical features or effortless operation. Setup still depends on a compatible app, account configuration, local network, the required Matter controller or hub, and the product’s transport technology. Advanced schedules, energy data, firmware tools, or alerts may remain available only in the manufacturer’s app.

Tapo also emphasizes local control after configuration. That should be distinguished from complete independence from cloud services: remote access, voice commands, account functions, and some automations may still depend on the vendor or smart-home platform.

The Tapo store showed an observed U.S. price of $11.99 for one plug and $24.99 for a three-pack in captured August 2026 results, with higher comparison prices displayed. These are dated observations, not guaranteed current prices.

Best energy-monitoring choices

Buy an energy-monitoring plug only if you will use the information. The useful questions are not simply whether a product says “energy monitoring,” but what it actually reports:

  • Live wattage.
  • Voltage and current.
  • Cumulative kilowatt-hours.
  • Daily or historical charts.
  • Electricity-cost estimates.
  • Threshold alerts or shutoff rules.
  • Automations triggered by power use.
  • Whether data can be exported.

The Kasa KP125M combines Matter compatibility with real-time and historical energy monitoring. Kasa also advertises threshold-based shutoff. It is a good fit for comparing appliances, identifying standby consumption, or noticing unusual changes over time.

The Tapo P110M is another Matter-certified energy-monitoring model listed in Tapo’s current store collection. A four-pack was shown at an observed sale price of $35.99, with $49.99 displayed as the comparison price. Confirm the current listing, regional model, and platform support before purchase.

Smart-plug readings are useful for trends and comparisons, but should not automatically be treated as utility-bill-grade measurements. Accuracy, history presentation, cost calculations, alerts, and available controls differ between products and apps.

Best cheap option: Govee Smart Plug

BGR selected the Govee Smart Plug as its budget choice. The trade-off identified in that review was a less appealing app and the lack of Matter and Apple Home support. It can make sense when the goal is inexpensive indoor on/off control in an Alexa- or Google-oriented home, but a low purchase price is not the same as the lowest long-term cost.

For a multi-room installation, compare the effective per-unit price of multipacks, required accounts, cloud dependence, warranty, support, certification marks, and whether the model will remain compatible with the platform you intend to use. Do not use an old budget recommendation without checking the exact current generation.

Best Apple Home and Siri route

BGR’s original Siri-enabled pick was the Tapo P125. Do not confuse that model with the current Tapo P125M. The P125M provides a more current Matter-based route into Apple Home and also lists Alexa, Google Assistant, and Samsung SmartThings compatibility.

For Apple households, verify whether the plug appears natively in Apple Home through Matter, whether a home hub is needed for remote control or automations, and whether advanced features such as energy history are visible in Apple Home or only in the Tapo app. Broad “Apple Home compatible” language does not prove feature parity.

Best outdoor option: Tapo P400M

BGR selected the Tapo P400M as its outdoor pick. Tapo’s current store listing identifies the P400M as a Matter-certified outdoor plug with an IP65 designation. The captured listing showed an observed sale price of $19.99 against a $32.99 comparison price, but it also indicated that the product was sold out at the time captured. Check stock immediately before buying.

Use an outdoor model for exposed holiday lights, patio equipment, gardens, and other exterior locations. An indoor plug is not an acceptable substitute merely because its electrical rating is high. Inspect the complete installation: the receptacle, cover, cord, connections, mounting position, and weather exposure must all comply with the manufacturer’s directions.

IP65 describes enclosure protection under specified test conditions. It does not mean the plug can be submerged, used with damaged cords, or installed in any location without protection.

Safety: the 15-amp number is not a blanket recommendation

A 15-amp rating describes an electrical limit; it does not make every 15-amp appliance safe to operate unattended. Consider the load type, startup surge, duty cycle, heat, motor or compressor characteristics, cord condition, and the appliance manufacturer’s instructions.

For example, the Kasa EP10 and Tapo P125M list 15 amps and 1,800 watts at 120 volts for general or resistive loads, along with a 1/6-horsepower motor rating. Those figures should be compared with the actual appliance—not used as permission to automate a high-risk load.

2.4-GHz Wi-Fi and setup problems

Many inexpensive Wi-Fi plugs, including the Kasa EP10 and Tapo P125M, require 2.4-GHz Wi-Fi rather than 5 GHz. This is a normal product constraint, not automatically a defect. The problem is that modern routers and mesh systems often combine bands under one network name.

Setup can fail when:

  • The phone switches between 2.4- and 5-GHz bands during onboarding.
  • The mesh node at the outlet has a weak signal.
  • The router uses enterprise authentication or a captive portal.
  • Bluetooth, local-network, or location permissions are blocked.
  • The app has the wrong region selected.
  • The plug was previously paired and was not reset.
  • The QR or Matter setup code is unavailable.

A reliable generic setup sequence

  1. Confirm the exact model, ecosystem support, outdoor rating, and Wi-Fi requirement.
  2. Install the manufacturer’s app, or use a compatible Matter ecosystem app when appropriate.
  3. Connect the phone to the required 2.4-GHz network.
  4. Plug the device directly into a wall receptacle.
  5. Reset it if it was previously configured.
  6. Add the plug and allow required Bluetooth, local-network, and location permissions.
  7. Install firmware updates.
  8. Assign a room and use a clear name such as “Living room lamp.”
  9. Test manual on/off control.
  10. Link Alexa, Google Home, Apple Home, or SmartThings.
  11. Create a schedule and test it while you are present.
  12. Reboot the router or briefly interrupt power and verify recovery before relying on automation.

If pairing fails, move the plug closer to the router, temporarily separate the 2.4- and 5-GHz network names, check permissions and regional settings, then reset the plug and try again. After any power-restoration test, confirm that the appliance itself resumes the desired operating state.

Reliability questions a good test should answer

The phrase “best” is meaningful only when the test defines reliability. A thorough comparison should record the exact model and hardware revision, firmware version, router and phone, testing dates, load types, switching cycles, missed commands, reconnection time, and behavior after power loss and router restarts.

It should also distinguish:

  • Whether schedules remain stored after an internet outage.
  • Whether power restoration returns the plug to on, off, or its previous state.
  • Whether physical-button control works offline.
  • Whether remote control requires the vendor cloud.
  • Whether Matter automations continue locally.
  • Whether firmware updates change behavior.

BGR’s article reports nearly 100 models tested over roughly a decade, but does not publish a complete model list, standardized scoring table, per-model test dates, sample sizes, or detailed measurements. Its category winners are therefore useful historical editorial judgments, not a reproducible 2026 laboratory ranking.

Physical design details that matter

Before buying several plugs, check body width and depth, orientation, button access, LED brightness, plug grip, cable clearance, and whether the unit blocks the neighboring socket. Compact models such as the Kasa EP10 and Tapo P125M are marketed as preserving access to the adjacent outlet, but a crowded receptacle, surge protector, or power strip can change the fit.

A bright status light may be distracting in a bedroom. A side-mounted button may be difficult to reach behind furniture. These practical details can matter more than small differences in nominal app response time.

How to choose in five decisions

  1. Choose the ecosystem. Identify whether you use Alexa, Google Home, Apple Home, SmartThings, several platforms, or only the manufacturer app.
  2. Choose Matter deliberately. Prioritize it for mixed-platform homes or future flexibility, but confirm the required controller and feature support.
  3. Choose the location. Use an explicitly outdoor-rated model outdoors; do not infer weather resistance from amperage.
  4. Choose whether monitoring matters. Pay extra for energy data only when live readings, history, alerts, or power-based automations will be useful.
  5. Check the appliance. Confirm its restart behavior, load type, motor rating, and safety suitability before automating it.

Bottom line

The Kasa EP10 remains the original BGR recommendation for simple indoor Alexa and Google automation, but its lack of Matter and Apple Home support is a decisive limitation. For a current mixed-ecosystem or Apple Home purchase, the Tapo P125M is the more flexible specification-based choice. Select the Kasa KP125M or Tapo P110M for energy monitoring, and use the Tapo P400M—or another explicitly outdoor-rated model—for exterior installations only after confirming stock and current specifications.

Whichever model you choose, verify the exact hardware version, 2.4-GHz requirement, electrical limits, outage behavior, privacy terms, and appliance restart behavior before putting it into service.
