Google’s Nest Learning Thermostat (4th Gen) Gets Its First Discount—and It’s a Good One

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google’s Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) launched at $279.99 in the U.S. and received its first reported major discount on November 29, 2024, when it fell to approximately $229—a savings of about $50. The deal was notable because the newest premium Nest model still included the Nest Temperature Sensor (2nd gen). However, that promotion is historical, not a current 2026 sale. The latest Google Store price found for this model was $239.99, reduced from $279.99, so check the Google Store listing before buying.

What the first Nest Learning Thermostat discount included

The November 2024 Black Friday promotion cut roughly 18% from the thermostat’s $279.99 launch price. The approximately $229 price was reported across major retailers, although availability, colors, shipping, and return policies could vary by seller.

This was an early discount on a newly launched premium thermostat, rather than clearance pricing on an obsolete model. The box includes:

  • Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen)
  • Nest Temperature Sensor (2nd gen)
  • Thermostat base and trim plate
  • Steel plate for electrical-box installation
  • Mounting screws and wiring labels

The included sensor is a practical part of the value. It lets the system measure temperature in another room instead of relying only on the thermostat’s wall location. Both first- and second-generation Nest Temperature Sensors work with the fourth-generation Learning Thermostat, but the second-generation sensor is the one supplied in the box.

What is new about the fourth-generation model?

The official name matters: this is the Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen), not simply the “Nest Thermostat (4th gen).” Google also sells a less expensive, non-learning product called the Nest Thermostat. The two models have different features and compatibility requirements.

The fourth-generation Learning Thermostat includes a 2.68-inch circular LCD with 600 × 600-pixel resolution, Soli motion sensing, temperature, humidity, and ambient-light sensors, 2.4GHz and 5GHz 802.11n Wi-Fi, and a built-in rechargeable lithium battery. It works with Google Home and Matter-enabled apps and voice assistants, and it is ENERGY STAR certified.

Its AQ+ and AQ− terminals support certain humidifier, dehumidifier, and ventilation configurations. Google also positions this model as supporting more HVAC configurations than earlier Nest thermostats.

Do not confuse later software additions with features that existed during the 2024 sale. Google’s update history says version 2.4, released April 30, 2026, added expanded multi-stage heat-pump support, on-device setup and advanced settings, and Matter bridge support. Those capabilities reflect later software development.

Why the included temperature sensor can matter

A wall-mounted thermostat may not represent the temperature in the room where people spend most of their time. A hallway can be comfortable while an upstairs bedroom remains cold, or a thermostat near a kitchen can read warmer than the rest of the home.

The remote sensor can be placed in a representative living area and used to measure that room. It will not balance every room or correct ductwork, insulation, airflow, or zoning problems, but it can make temperature control more relevant to the occupants. Place it away from supply vents, direct sunlight, drafts, and unusually hot or cold surfaces.

Check HVAC compatibility before buying

The $50 saving is not useful if the thermostat cannot control your heating and cooling equipment. Google says the fourth-generation Learning Thermostat is designed for most 20–30VAC systems, including many gas, electric, oil, forced-air, heat-pump, and radiant systems.

Depending on the system, it supports up to three stages of conventional heating, two stages of conventional cooling, heat pumps with auxiliary and emergency heat, fan control, and certain humidifier, dehumidifier, and ventilation setups through the AQ terminals.

Use Google’s official compatibility checker and wiring guide as the deciding test. The setup process can generate wiring guidance based on the terminals in your home.

The C-wire is not an absolute yes-or-no question

Google says the thermostat can operate without a common C wire in many installations, but a C wire or Nest Power Connector may be needed in limited cases—Google identifies those cases as fewer than 1%. Do not interpret that as a guarantee for every home.

Power problems can show up as intermittent disconnection, battery or power warnings, or unreliable HVAC operation. A Nest Power Connector or professional wiring work may solve some installations, but neither should be assumed to be the right remedy without checking the system.

Systems that deserve extra caution

Verify compatibility before purchase if the home has proprietary wiring, multiple transformers, complex zones, steam or forced-hot-water equipment, international or nonstandard wiring, more heating or cooling stages than the thermostat supports, or specialized terminals marked with labels such as 1, 2, 3, A, or B. Some proprietary systems are incompatible unless an adapter, rewiring, or professional intervention is available.

DIY installation versus professional installation

DIY installation can be reasonable for someone comfortable identifying HVAC wires, turning off power to the equipment, and following Google’s wiring instructions. Photograph and label the existing wiring before disconnecting anything, and do not rely on terminal appearance alone if the system is unusual.

Professional installation is the safer choice when wiring is unclear, access is difficult, the system is zoned or proprietary, multiple transformers are involved, or an HVAC failure would be costly or disruptive. Installation prices and time vary by region, equipment, wiring access, and installer, so the hardware discount should be evaluated as part of the total installed cost.

After installation, advanced features require the Google Home app. Before the thermostat is added to Google Home, only basic temperature-setpoint and mode adjustments are available.

Is approximately $229 a genuinely good deal?

For a compatible Google Home household, yes—especially if the remote sensor solves a real room-temperature problem. The deal offered a new premium model at about 18% below its launch price, retained the included second-generation sensor, and narrowed the price gap with less expensive smart thermostats.

But the discount alone does not make it the right choice. A functioning recent Nest may already provide the scheduling and remote-control features you need. The fourth-generation upgrade is more compelling if you want its newer display, included sensor, expanded HVAC support, or later software capabilities.

Energy savings are not guaranteed. Results depend on the HVAC equipment, climate, insulation, occupancy, schedules, and settings. A smart thermostat should not be purchased on the promise of a specific energy reduction or guaranteed payback.

Who should buy, wait, or compare?

Buy when:

  • Your home has a compatible 24-volt HVAC system confirmed by Google’s checker.
  • You want Google Home integration or Matter-related control.
  • A remote sensor could address a meaningful hot or cold room.
  • Your existing thermostat is old, failing, or missing modern controls.
  • The price is still near $229–$240 and the seller offers a straightforward return policy.

Wait or skip when:

  • You have not checked the wiring and equipment compatibility.
  • Your system uses proprietary controls or unusual terminals.
  • You do not want Google Home to be central to setup and advanced controls.
  • Your current thermostat already does everything you need.
  • Professional installation would erase the hardware savings.

Consider an older Nest when:

An older Nest Learning Thermostat may be the better value if the home does not need the fourth generation’s newer HVAC support or included sensor. Buy only from a reputable seller with a full warranty, and compare the total price rather than assuming an older model is automatically compatible.

Other smart thermostats from ecobee, Amazon, or Resideo/Honeywell may make more sense for households that prefer another app ecosystem or different HVAC support. Their current prices and exact compatibility should be checked separately.

Bottom line on the Nest deal

The approximately $229 Black Friday price was a strong first discount on Google’s new Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen), not merely a small markdown on an aging product. Its included Nest Temperature Sensor (2nd gen) improved the value, particularly for homes with a persistent hot or cold room.

Because that promotion dates to November 29, 2024, treat $229 as historical context rather than a current offer. The latest indexed Google Store price was $239.99, but prices and inventory change. Before purchasing, confirm the live price, return policy, and HVAC compatibility—and include installation in the budget.
