But the “record-breaking” label is not established by the University’s published information: it provides a size, not a national comparison. As of the University of Oregon Athletics’ August 7, 2026 update, the indoor building was still in progress; the adjacent outdoor turf fields had begun hosting official practice.
What Oregon is building
The University of Oregon describes a 170,000-square-foot indoor athletics training facility for varsity football. The project site is west of Autzen Stadium, between Leo Harris Parkway and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. The University says the project is privately funded, with the UO Foundation managing it. The overall work extends beyond the indoor building. It includes relocating two outdoor practice fields, realigning Leo Harris Parkway, and community improvements involving parking, accessibility, and natural areas in Alton Baker Park. The University says the project is intended to increase indoor-training access, free existing facilities for other student-athletes, and make movement among nearby practice, training, and meeting areas safer and more efficient.
How big is it, and is it a college-football record?
The University’s current project page gives the planned building’s area as 170,000 square feet. That figure is substantial, but it does not establish that the facility is the largest or a record-holder: the official project information does not provide a national ranking or a comparison with other college facilities.

For local context, Oregon Athletics lists the existing Moshofsky Center at 117,000 square feet. The planned building is therefore 53,000 square feet larger by the figures published for the two buildings. This is an area comparison, not a claim that their layouts or uses are equivalent. Moshofsky is a multi-use venue, and its profile describes the older project’s historical cost as close to $15 million for the center together with two grass practice fields and a soccer competition field; that figure is not the cost of the new project. What the latest update says about construction
In a report published August 7, 2026, Oregon Athletics said the indoor facility was still in progress. The Ducks held their first official practice that day on the new outdoor turf fields adjacent to the building. That milestone documents use of the outdoor fields; it does not mean the indoor building had opened. The report supplies no indoor-facility opening date. Oregon Athletics, August 7, 2026.

The University’s current project page does not give a total project cost or a newer completion date. An October 2021 announcement had projected completion in 2024, but that projection is outdated and should not be treated as the current schedule. University of Oregon, October 19, 2021 announcement.

Why add another indoor facility?
Oregon’s stated case is about both football and access across its athletics program. A dedicated indoor venue for football is intended to add indoor-training capacity, while freeing existing facilities for other student-athletes. The project page also points to safer, more efficient movement among nearby practice, training, and meeting spaces as a goal.

The existing Moshofsky Center helps explain the capacity question. It opened in August 1998 and has a full-length artificial football surface, a synthetic four-lane 120-meter running track, and adaptable nets used for baseball and softball batting practice or golf. Oregon Athletics says eight of the university’s 16 intercollegiate sports use the center. A new football-focused building could ease competing demands on this shared venue, though the University has not published a detailed allocation plan for how teams will use the facilities after construction.

The 2021 announcement divided the planned 170,000 square feet into a 130,000-square-foot practice field and a 40,000-square-foot connector. It described a curved exterior shell using Northwest timber and inspired by the Oregon “O,” with tinted roof panels supported by steel cable. The proposed panels were intended to admit natural light while limiting glare and heat. The announcement also described natural ventilation for much of the year and ventilation to help address wildfire air quality when needed.

These are features of the 2021 proposal, not confirmed final or as-built specifications; the current project page does not verify each design detail.
