For most home theaters, begin with a 30°–36° horizontal viewing angle. Use roughly 30°–32° for relaxed television, sports and gaming; 34°–36° for a movie-focused room; and test 38°–40° only if you want an especially enveloping image. Calculate from the screen’s active width and measure from the viewer’s eyes—not the sofa, wall or projector—to the screen plane.
There is no universal “perfect” distance. Screen aspect ratio, content, resolution, room lighting, seating layout and personal comfort all change the right answer.

What seating distance actually means
Seating distance is the distance from the viewer’s eyes in the normal viewing position to the plane of the active image. Measure a recliner with the footrest in its usual viewing position, not from its front edge.

- Do not measure from the back wall to the sofa.
- Do not measure from the sofa’s front edge.
- Do not use the projector lens-to-screen distance.
- Use the visible image area, excluding the bezel, frame or projector housing.
Install the furniture first when possible, then measure from the eye position you will actually use.

Use viewing angle instead of a diagonal-only rule
The useful measurement is the screen’s horizontal viewing angle: how wide the image appears from the main seat. Calculate distance with:
Distance = screen width ÷ [2 × tan(viewing angle ÷ 2)]
Keep screen width and distance in the same units. This geometry-based method is explained by ThrowCalc’s viewing-distance calculator. For a 16:9 display, width is approximately diagonal × 0.8716, producing these planning shortcuts:

These ratios are approximations for 16:9 images, not guarantees of comfort or picture quality.
Choosing between 30°, 36° and 40°

THX publishes a 36° horizontal angle from the farthest seat in its certified screen-placement guidance and stresses unobstructed sight lines: THX screen placement guidance. The commonly cited 30° SMPTE-based target is more conservative; 40° is an aggressive enthusiast target rather than a universal THX requirement. A larger screen viewed farther away can create the same angle as a smaller screen viewed closer. Choose based on room depth, walkways, brightness, image quality and seating—not on diagonal size alone.
THX’s 4K maximum-gap shortcut
THX also publishes a simpler 4K rule: maximum viewing distance (inches) ≈ diagonal ÷ 0.835. Examples are:

This is a maximum-distance shortcut for resolving detail on 4K/UHD displays, not a complete seating-design standard. See THX’s FAQ and THX room-size guidance. It can produce a much closer result than a relaxed 30° plan.

TV or projector: same geometry, different constraints
Television
A TV’s size is fixed after purchase. Check wall width, daytime brightness, HDR performance, side-seat viewing angles, refresh rate, gaming features and mount compatibility. Dolby notes that suitable TV size depends on viewing distance, room size and display type: Dolby home-theater setup.
Projector
A projector can often change image size through zoom or lens position, but throw ratio, lens shift, brightness, screen gain, room darkness and installation become critical. Screen size that is geometrically correct can still look washed out in ambient light or reveal focus and texture problems. Epson’s Pro Cinema LS12000, for example, is specified at up to 2,700 lumens for both color and white brightness; verify current specifications and price at Epson. Sony’s U.S. listings show premium home-theater projectors from about $5,999.99, with promotions and inventory changing; check the live page at Sony.
How resolution and content change comfort
4K can make closer seating more viable by reducing visible pixel structure, but it does not make every distance acceptable. Streaming compression, scaling, focus errors, screen texture, motion processing and panel quality remain visible.

- General TV and streaming: start at 30°–32°.
- Sports: 30°–36%, balancing score-box readability with comfort.
- Movies: 34°–36° in a dedicated room.
- Gaming: commonly 30°–36°; competitive players may prefer a calmer scan, while cinematic games may suit a wider angle. Viewing distance is separate from input latency.
- Subtitles: an extreme angle can require excessive eye movement; test a full subtitled film.
- Motion-sensitive viewers and children: begin farther back, around 28°–32°.
Screen height matters as much as distance
THX advises keeping the line of sight near the screen center and generally no more than 15° above or below center: THX FAQ. A correctly sized screen can still feel uncomfortable when mounted too high. Account for reclined eye height, a center-channel speaker and any riser before fixing the mount.
Planning multiple seating rows
- Design around the farthest row so it retains at least your chosen minimum angle; THX’s 36° guidance specifically addresses the farthest seat.
- Confirm the front row is not uncomfortably close, especially at 38°–40°.
- Raise the rear row enough to see over heads and preserve a clear line of sight.
- Check vertical as well as horizontal viewing angles.
- Avoid putting the principal row directly against the rear wall, where bass response, reflections and surround balance can suffer.
THX emphasizes unobstructed views from every seat, while Dolby recommends seats face the screen and remain near the centerline: Dolby guidance.
Do not optimize the picture in isolation
Seating location changes what you hear as well as what you see. Dolby states that seating position affects audio quality: Dolby audio and theater guidance. Check the center speaker’s relationship to the screen, left/right spacing, surround angles, subwoofer response and acoustic treatment. A visually ideal seat against a wall may be a poor listening seat.
Five-minute tape test before buying
- Measure the eye-to-screen distance from the installed or planned seat.
- Choose 30°, 36° or an intermediate target based on room use.
- Calculate screen width, then convert to diagonal for the intended aspect ratio.
- Mark the active image boundaries on the wall with painter’s tape.
- Watch a full movie or several hours of mixed content from the proposed seat.
- Check subtitles, sports overlays, gaming HUDs, rapid pans and off-center seats.
- Recheck screen centerline, reclined eye height, projector throw and brightness before ordering.
For 2.35:1 or 2.40:1 cinema screens, do not reuse a 16:9 diagonal conversion. Calculate using the actual screen width and aspect ratio; constant-image-height setups may make widescreen films appear differently sized than 16:9 television.
