The Onefinity X-35 Machinist is a compact, rigid hobby CNC router with a 16 × 16 × 5.25-inch cutting area. In Make:’s January 2024 review, Caleb Kraft found assembly straightforward and woodworking with a palm router successful; he also reported machining aluminum, but his feed-and-speed mistakes destroyed end mills, so that experience is not proof of dependable metal-cutting performance. The X-35 is the original generation and is no longer sold by Onefinity, making the condition, controller, and included equipment central to any purchase.
What the X-35 Machinist is—and what its name means
Machinist is the smaller X-35 configuration, with a 16 × 16 × 5.25-inch cutting area according to Easel’s Onefinity X-35 profile. The “X-35” designation refers to the diameter of the rail tubes, not the machine’s work area or rail length. Onefinity’s 2021 comparison specifies 35 mm tubes with 5 mm walls.
Easel describes the X-35 drive system as two hardened-steel rail tubes with sealed linear bearings and ball screws on every axis. It is a CNC router platform, not a complete ready-to-cut package: the X-35 generation used an optional Buildbotics controller, and a router or spindle was not included as standard.
What the review found in use
Assembly and woodworking
Kraft received a kit that required assembly and supplied his own spoilboard. He found the instructions easy to follow and described the machine as unusually solid for a hobby router. His woodworking examples used plywood scraps, a V-bit, and a palm router. These observations make the review useful for understanding setup and small-shop woodworking, but they are not a standardized test of accuracy, production throughput, or long-term reliability.

Aluminum: a limited report, not a performance guarantee
Kraft said the machine handled his aluminum work, while also noting that he rarely machined metal, made feed-and-speed errors, and destroyed end mills. That is a candid account of one reviewer’s experience—not evidence that the X-35 will reliably cut aluminum across different alloys, tooling, workholding, or operators. Anyone planning metal work should treat material, bit choice, feeds and speeds, chip evacuation, and workholding as part of the setup, not assume the machine’s frame alone settles the question. Easel offers suggested spindle-speed references by material and bit type, but those are setup guidance rather than independent performance results.
Controls and visibility
Kraft liked the tested setup’s display and controls and mentioned a three-axis probe and paired game controller. He did not find an in-file speed override or graphical toolpath display, but explicitly allowed that he might have overlooked those functions. His comments should therefore be read as observations about the setup he reviewed, not confirmation that those features are absent from every X-35 configuration.

How X-35 compares with X-50
Onefinity’s June 2021 comparison describes the X-50 as a larger-rail generation: 50 mm tubes with 6 mm walls, compared with the X-35’s 35 mm tubes and 5 mm walls. The same manufacturer comparison claims the X-50 stepper motor provides up to 40% more torque and its 1616 ball screw gives 60% more speed than the X-35’s 1610 without a motor-setting change. These are Onefinity’s specifications and claims, not results from an independent side-by-side test.

Choose by the work envelope and shop setup you need, not rail diameter alone. Consider available table space, expected material and cut depth, router or spindle setup, controller and software workflow, and what the particular listing includes. Onefinity’s X-35/X-50 comparison does not establish independent comparative cut-quality or reliability results.
Controller, connectivity, and Easel workflow
Easel says the X-35 connects over Ethernet or Wi-Fi rather than USB. For Easel, the workflow is to choose a non-GRBL machine profile, export G-code as an .nc file, and load that file to the Buildbotics controller through its network or web interface. Easel’s live Driver and Rapid Connect do not connect to this controller. If Easel is important to your workflow, account for that export-and-load step rather than expecting a direct live connection.

- Versatile Compatibility: Easily switch between different spindles and laser modules with the included Φ65mm spindle holder and Φ52mm adapter. Also compatible with Φ69mm spindle brackets, giving you the flexibility to expand your machine’s capabilities effortlessly
Controller details matter especially on a used machine: the Buildbotics controller was optional on the X-35 generation, so verify the exact unit rather than assuming it is included or configured as expected.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is the X-35 Machinist still a sensible purchase?
Easel states that Onefinity no longer sells the X-35. A buyer should therefore evaluate a used machine or remaining-stock listing on its own condition and package contents; the 2024 review price does not establish present availability or fair value. The X-35 may suit a shop that needs its 16-inch class work area and is comfortable verifying an older machine’s controller and accessories. A buyer who needs a larger work envelope or wants the newer rail and motion specifications should compare specific X-50 options, while remembering that the published percentage advantages are manufacturer claims.

Do not assume there is a documented upgrade path from the X-35 Machinist to Elite. Onefinity’s Elite upgrade FAQ lists X-35 Woodworker, X-50 Woodworker, and X-50 Journeyman paths, but not the X-35 Machinist. The FAQ also says an upgrade kit does not increase rail size.
Quick Recap
Used-machine and setup checklist
- Verify the exact model and work area. Confirm it is the Machinist configuration and check the 16 × 16 × 5.25-inch cutting area; X-35 identifies tube diameter, not the work area.
- Inventory the electronics and accessories. Ask whether the Buildbotics controller, display, wiring, probe, router or spindle, collets, software, and manuals are included. Do not assume optional equipment is part of the sale.
- Plan for the cutting surface and tool. Kraft supplied his own spoilboard, and Easel says the machine was designed around Onefinity’s recommended Makita RT0701C compact router. Confirm what the actual machine includes before budgeting for missing items.
- Check the table solution. Onefinity’s Machinist QCW Frame listing describes integrated T-track and wasteboard features; MDF is not included, and the listing calls for 1/4-20 hex-head bolts for the track. The price displayed when observed in October 2026 was $284.38 on sale against a $325 list price; both are time-sensitive listing figures, not enduring prices.
- Match replacement cables to the generation. Onefinity lists a replacement cable set for X-35/X-50 Machinist and Woodworker models and says it is not compatible with Elite machines. Check the exact connections and generation before ordering.
- Confirm the software path. If you intend to use Easel, make sure the export-and-load approach through the network or web interface fits your workflow.
