Notre-Dame de Paris has undergone several major periods of change and repair, but the documented record does not support a reliable list of exactly ten separate renovation projects. Its story runs from 12th-century construction and 18th-century modifications to a major 19th-century restoration, later stone treatment, and the emergency stabilization and reconstruction that followed the 2019 fire. The cathedral reopened on 8 December 2024, while exterior conservation work continued beyond that milestone.
Notre-Dame’s major building campaigns, in chronological order
The dates below distinguish the cathedral’s original construction from later modification, restoration, emergency stabilization, and post-fire reconstruction. Some official histories identify periods rather than discrete, fully dated projects, so they cannot be counted honestly as ten separate renovations.

Notre-Dame was built in the 12th century. This is the beginning of the building’s history, not a renovation. The cathedral’s official history establishes the period but does not provide a detailed sequence of later medieval alterations.
18th century: modifications
The same official historical overview says the building was modified in the 18th century. It does not specify the individual changes or their exact dates, so they should not be presented as a precisely dated renovation campaign.

After 1831, with a major restoration decision in 1842
Victor Hugo’s 1831 novel Notre-Dame de Paris helped spark a national mobilization to preserve the cathedral. The cathedral’s contemporary-era history dates the decision for a major restoration project to 1842. Hugo’s influence was a catalyst for preservation, not the sole cause of every part of the project.
19th century: restoration associated with Viollet-le-Duc
Eugène Viollet-le-Duc led a major 19th-century restoration. That work became part of the building’s history rather than a temporary return to an untouched medieval state: after the 2019 fire, officials selected the Viollet-le-Duc state as the reference for reconstructing the transept roof structure and spire. Restoration can therefore preserve a historically significant later layer as well as earlier fabric.

What changed after the 2019 fire?
2019–2021: emergency safeguarding and structural consolidation
After firefighters controlled the fire on 16 April 2019, the immediate construction priority was to secure the structure, keep water out, and reduce the risk of vault collapse. The Ministry of Culture reports that 28 timber or metal supports were installed to protect damaged vaults and flying buttresses. These were emergency measures, not ordinary maintenance.
The work was interrupted in summer 2019 because of lead risk and again in spring 2020 because of COVID-19 restrictions. Removal of the fire-damaged scaffolding was completed on 24 November 2020. The ministry records definitive securing of the building in September 2021.

Flying buttresses help counter the outward thrust of the vaults. The Ministry of Culture attributes this explanation to Philippe Villeneuve, chief architect of historic monuments: “Un arc-boutant doit contrebalancer la poussée exercée par les voûtes. Si les voûtes tombent, l’arc-boutant risque d’entraîner l’effondrement des murs. Cintrer les arcs-boutants permet d’annuler cette poussée”. The supports and bracing addressed a structural chain reaction: damage to vaults could threaten the buttresses and, in turn, the walls.
2020–2021: choosing the reconstruction reference states
Once the building was secured, the project moved from emergency protection toward restoration. The Ministry of Culture’s project account says the heritage commission supported restoring the roof and spire to the Viollet-le-Duc state in 2020. In 2021, it supported reconstructing the transept and spire in that state while rebuilding the nave and choir roof structures to their medieval state.

The approved approach specified oak framing and lead roofing. It was not one uniform choice of historical period across the whole roof: the reference state differed by section. The official project record documents the commission’s decisions; it does not establish that every alternative was undisputed or universally supported.
2022–2024: restoration for reopening
The reconstruction and restoration phase intended to enable reopening was completed on schedule and on budget, according to the French Court of Accounts’ September 2025 assessment. The Court summarizes a May 2022 estimate of €552 million for this 2022–2024 phase; that figure is an estimate, not final total expenditure for all work at Notre-Dame.

Notre-Dame reopened to worship and visitors on 8 December 2024. UNESCO reported the reopening the previous day in its 7 December 2024 announcement. The Court of Accounts’ September 2025 assessment distinguishes the completed reopening phase from continuing work: restoration of the upper exterior was planned to continue through the end of 2028. Reopening is a milestone in use of the building, not proof that every conservation task is complete.
