Why use cleats for shop organization?
The main advantage is flexibility: storage units can be added, removed, and rearranged when the shop layout or storage needs change. That makes the approach useful for a workshop that evolves alongside its owner’s skills and tools.
What to verify before building or buying
The accessible text of the WOOD Magazine article points to drawings for typical wall-cleat heights and cabinet-cleat sizes, but it does not state those dimensions. It also does not provide material specifications, fastener schedules, load ratings, or a particular product recommendation. Those details should come from a suitable plan or the manufacturer’s specifications for the components you choose.

If comparing shop-made cleats with ready-made modular storage, check whether the parts fit your existing organizers, what dimensions and mounting method they use, whether a load rating is stated, and how easily units can be rearranged. These are practical questions to ask; they are not specifications established by the article.

“Nothing beats cleats” can also refer to traction devices worn over shoes in winter. That is a different subject from woodworking storage. WorkSafeNB’s discussion guide, “Slips on ice hurt!,” addresses workplace slip hazards, not the effectiveness or design of shop-storage cleats.
