As of the Oct. 9, 2026 update, County B between WIS 37 and WIS 88 was reported closed, while County D at the Lake Chetek Bridge was open to one lane under temporary signals. Southbound US 53 was expected to be fully open for the weekend, but finishing-work lane closures could follow the next week. These are dated project updates, not live conditions; check 511 Wisconsin before travelling.

Active work in the six-county roundup
DrydenWire’s roundup covers Barron, Burnett, Polk, Rusk, Sawyer, and Washburn counties. The entries below focus on the reported travel impacts in that roundup and should not be read as a complete list of every project in the wider WisDOT region.

County D remained open to one lane across the Lake Chetek Bridge, with temporary traffic signals controlling vehicles. The project includes a concrete bridge-deck overlay and repairs to sidewalks, piers, parapet, joints, drainage grates, and approach pavement. Work was scheduled through late November, according to the Oct. 9 update.

Barron County: southbound US 53 between Cameron and New Auburn
The 2026 bridge work covered the Chetek River, 20th Street, and County I structures. At the time of the update, southbound US 53 remained open, with single-lane closures and a 60 mph reduced speed limit at various structures while finishing work continued. The update forecast a full opening for the weekend of Oct. 9; it also said lane closures at the County I and Carlson School Road bridges might be needed during the week of Oct. 12. That forecast is not confirmation of current conditions.
Projects marked complete
The six-county roundup listed the Lightning Creek Bridge project on 15 ½ Avenue northwest of Almena and the US 63 Beaver Dam Lake project in Cumberland as complete. The update did not provide a separate current-condition check beyond that status.

Closure in the wider Northwest Region update
The broader WisDOT Northwest Region update covers 20 counties, rather than just the six in DrydenWire’s headline roundup. Menomonie Minute’s reproduction of the Oct. 9 update reported County B closed between WIS 37 and WIS 88, with work scheduled to early November. The project involves pulverizing and relaying existing pavement, adding asphalt, replacing or extending culverts, adding guardrail at two bridges, and installing pavement markings.

That wider update also reported WIS 27 closed at Sandy Run Creek south of US 2, from the project’s northern terminus to about four-tenths of a mile south of US 2, and WIS 35 reduced to one lane under temporary signals at Waumandee Creek Bridge. These examples belong to the broader regional coverage; they should not be attributed to the six-county roundup without checking county scope.

The DrydenWire Oct. 9 roundup is the six-county update for Barron, Burnett, Polk, Rusk, Sawyer, and Washburn counties. WisDOT’s Northwest Region page covers a broader 20-county area. The official page reviewed for this report displayed an Oct. 2 entry, so it does not independently confirm the Oct. 9 details listed here. The Oct. 9 regional information was reproduced by Menomonie Minute.

Allow for a changing work zone where a report describes an expected opening or says lane closures might occur. A projected date in the Oct. 9 update is not a guarantee that work has ended.
