Nokia Home Security Camera Review: What It Was—and Whether It’s Worth Buying in 2026

The Nokia Home was a Withings-derived indoor camera with a distinctive VOC sensor. Its legacy app and service uncertainty make it a risky security-camera purchase today.

Verdict: The Nokia Home was an unusual indoor camera for its time, combining 720p video, motion and sound alerts, baby-monitor functions, and a volatile-organic-compound (VOC) sensor. In 2026, it is a legacy device with unclear service and app support. Don’t buy it as your primary security camera. Consider a used unit only for low-stakes monitoring if you can verify activation, live view, alerts, and account transfer before the return window closes.

What the Nokia Home actually was

The Nokia Home was a Nokia-branded version of the Withings Home, rather than a camera platform designed from scratch by Nokia. A 2017 review described it as virtually the same product as the Withings Home. Android Headlines’ 2017 review is useful for understanding the device as it was sold then, but it cannot establish how well a particular camera or its services work today.

Withings products later returned to the Withings brand after the health-device business changed ownership. The Nokia Home is not the same as Nokia’s industrial cameras, Nokia WiFi equipment, enterprise video analytics, or smart-home features incorporated into some telecom-provider gateways. Nokia’s current licensed-products page does not list the Home as an active consumer camera: Nokia licensed products.

Why it was not a typical security camera

Its distinctive feature was a VOC sensor alongside the camera. The product was positioned as a hybrid indoor monitor: it could provide video and alerts for movement and sound, offer a baby-monitor mode, and report changes in VOC levels. A downward-facing infrared light could also serve as a night light.

VOC sensing is not a substitute for a certified smoke or carbon-monoxide alarm. It also does not establish measurements of radon, humidity, particulate matter, or accurate carbon-dioxide concentration. Treat its air-quality function as a limited additional signal, not a life-safety system or a complete indoor-air-quality assessment.

Historical hardware specifications

The figures below describe the product in contemporary documentation and coverage; they are not measurements of a used unit’s current condition.

Feature Historical Nokia/Withings Home detail
Video 720p HD live streaming and recording, according to the 2017 review
Image sensor 5 megapixels, identified in the Withings quick-install guide; this does not mean the camera records 5-megapixel video
Field of view 135 degrees, reported by the 2017 review
Zoom 12× digital zoom, as reported by the 2017 review
Night vision Infrared night-vision LED, shown in the Withings guide
Audio Two digital microphones, identified in the Withings guide
Air sensing VOC sensor, identified in the Withings guide
Connectivity 2.4-GHz Wi-Fi; Ethernet installation was also documented. The 2017 review notes the 2.4-GHz limitation.
Mounting and power Magnetic table stand with vertical adjustment; wired power from the supplied cable and regional adapter
Extra light Bottom infrared light could function as a night light, according to the 2017 review

App modes, setup, and privacy controls

Withings’ legacy control-center documentation describes four operating modes and an iOS-only scheduling feature. These are historical documented functions, not a guarantee that the app or cloud service remains available for every phone or region.

The original setup instructions require a Withings account. They describe adding a camera in the Home app, connecting over Wi-Fi or Ethernet, and completing a firmware update. Ethernet setup disabled Wi-Fi and Bluetooth after setup; the documented Ethernet workflow was unavailable on Android. The instructions also state that up to 20 cameras could be installed on one account. See Withings’ installation guide and control-center guide.

  1. Install the Home app and sign in or create a Withings account.
  2. Plug in the camera where it will be used.
  3. In the app, tap New camera and follow the pairing instructions.
  4. Connect over a 2.4-GHz Wi-Fi network or use Ethernet where the documented setup supports it.
  5. Allow the camera to complete any offered firmware update.
  6. Set motion, noise, and air-quality alert sensitivities, then choose a monitoring mode.

A successful setup should show the camera in the app and provide a live view; alerts or audio monitoring should work according to the selected mode. That expected result is a test to perform, not a promise about current service availability.

What its camera performance means today

For its era, the combination of a wide viewing angle, infrared night vision, remote viewing, Ethernet as an alternative connection, and motion, sound, and VOC alerts made the Home more versatile than a basic motion-only camera. The magnetic stand also suited flexible indoor placement.

Its 720p video is low resolution by current standards. It is mains-powered and intended for indoor use, not a current outdoor surveillance solution. The historical sources establish no modern person, package, or pet detection, facial recognition, local recording, or current smart-home compatibility. They also do not establish present-day image quality, latency, alert accuracy, microphone quality, or night-vision range; those would need testing on the specific unit.

Is the Nokia Home still supported?

The responsible answer is uncertain, not that every unit has stopped working. Withings still hosts Home guides covering installation, modes, firmware updates, and privacy controls. But online documentation alone does not prove that activation, cloud recording, app compatibility, updates, repairs, or customer support remain available.

A 2019 Withings community thread records users asking whether the product had been discontinued; it is not a current official discontinuation notice. The camera’s absence from Nokia’s current licensed-products listing is another reason to regard it as legacy hardware, not proof that a given unit cannot operate. Current activation across regions, compatibility with every present-day phone, cloud recording availability, firmware releases, replacement parts, and account transfer cannot be confirmed from those materials.

What to verify before buying a used unit

Because activation and remote functions depend on more than the camera’s physical condition, test the exact unit before keeping it.

  • Check that the Home app is available and runs on your current iOS or Android version.
  • Ask the seller to demonstrate live view and alerts, and confirm the camera can be removed from the seller’s account.
  • Confirm the correct power adapter and cable are included. The recessed port may not accept every ordinary micro-USB cable, according to the 2017 review.
  • Make sure you can provide a 2.4-GHz network; if Wi-Fi pairing fails, try the documented Ethernet option where available.
  • Allow time for firmware updating and test remote viewing, notifications, and recording separately. A working live view alone does not prove every service works.
  • Prefer a seller with a return window, and avoid sealed old stock unless returns are possible. A factory reset cannot be assumed to solve a backend or account-service problem.

Common failure points include an unavailable app, a camera still linked to another account, a 5-GHz-only network, a missing or incompatible cable, a stalled firmware update, notifications that fail despite working video, or unavailable cloud recording. Do not rely on the camera for security until the functions you need have been tested.

Privacy and cloud dependence

The documented setup uses an account, while remote access and cloud recording make the camera dependent on the vendor’s app and services. The available material does not establish a complete current data-retention policy, so check applicable privacy terms before connecting a legacy device to your network. The Withings privacy guide documents privacy controls, including Camera Off; that mode disables video recording and notifications.

An old connected camera also raises a practical support question: current security updates for this specific device are not clearly established. Avoid placing it where it would expose sensitive conversations, bedrooms, medical information, or children unless you have considered the account and cloud risks. Camera Off is a documented control, but it does not resolve uncertainty about service support or updates.

Who might still find one useful?

  • Existing owners: If a unit is already activated and its app still works, it may remain useful for low-stakes indoor observation.
  • Buyers drawn to VOC sensing: The feature is unusual, but its limits matter; a current dedicated air-quality sensor paired with a supported camera separates the two jobs and avoids depending on one legacy device.
  • Temporary baby monitoring: Consider it only after testing audio monitoring and app behavior on the phone you will use. It should not be treated as dependable without that check.
  • Collectors or bargain buyers: A low price and return option may make experimentation reasonable, but do not pay a premium for a sealed unit that could be impossible to activate.

It is a poor choice for primary security, outdoor coverage, evidence-quality video, local-storage requirements, modern AI alerts, or guaranteed software updates. VOC alerts are not a substitute for certified safety alarms.

Current alternatives to consider

Option Better fit when Trade-off
Google Nest Cam Indoor, wired, 3rd generation You want current hardware and Google Home integration; Google promotes event-history features for this model. It does not address the Nokia Home’s built-in VOC-sensing niche, and it is a poorer fit if you want to avoid Google’s cloud ecosystem. No current price is stated here.
Ring Indoor Cam You already use Ring or Amazon Alexa and want a current indoor-camera option. Ring says its Protect plan enables recording, photo capture, and additional features. Its page displayed a U.S. promotional bundle price of $49.99 for an Indoor Cam 2nd Gen plus window-and-door sensors, reduced from $79.98, when accessed for this article on August 16, 2026; this is a time-sensitive promotion, not a standing price. Ring publishes device-specific security-support dates, unlike the unclear status of the Nokia Home; see Ring’s security-update information.
Current camera plus a separate local-storage camera or dedicated VOC sensor You want to choose surveillance and air sensing independently, or reduce reliance on one legacy all-in-one platform. Local storage can reduce cloud dependence and recurring costs, but requires managing storage, firmware, account security, and possibly more complex setup. No specific model is recommended here.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
