Choose a plan by what you want to build
For a smaller display piece or family project
The WOOD Store design is 19 inches long and 6-1/4 inches wide. Lee Valley’s American Furniture Design plan is wider and taller, and is specifically described as beginner level. Lee Valley also provides a fuller instruction package, including a bill of materials and cutting list, and says the animals store inside the ark. Its estimate of a couple of weekends is the seller’s project estimate, not a guarantee for every builder.
For many figures and a larger scrollsaw build
Richard Packer’s plan is a substantially larger undertaking: its listed dimensions are 31 × 15 × 17 inches, with the rainbow rising to 20 inches, and its full-size patterns cover Noah’s family and 30 animals and birds. The listing calls it an ambitious scrollsaw project. Confirm that the scale and scope suit your workspace and the time you want to spend making the figures as well as the ark.

For storage or a specific extra feature
If storing figures inside matters, Lee Valley says its animals fit in the ark; FurniturePlans says its deck lifts off for storage. ToymakingPlans includes Jonah’s whale as a separate pattern, but its listing explicitly says the 10-3/8-inch whale does not fit in the ark. Compare the feature you need rather than assuming every plan includes animals, a removable deck, or storage.
Check the patterns, instructions, and format before buying
“Plan” can mean different things across these listings. Lee Valley specifies a full-size 36 × 48-inch plan and a companion instruction book. Richard Packer’s listing specifies full-size patterns and a 14-page English-language plan. ToymakingPlans describes an instant PDF with full-size patterns, exploded views, assembly photos, and step-by-step instructions. WOOD Store lists a downloadable plan; WoodworkersWorkshop lists paper and PDF options for plan 31-MD-00073. Lloydswoodtoyplans describes a 52-page downloadable PDF.

- Confirm whether animal and figure patterns are included, not just the ark pattern.
- Check that “full-size” patterns can be printed or reproduced at the stated scale; determine whether a large-format print shop is needed.
- Look for a cutting list, materials list, assembly sequence, and any jig or fixture plans if you will rely on the plan for those details.
- Verify the selected listing’s current format, language, and delivery method. These can change, and the plan pages do not establish current price or stock.
Match tools and materials to the selected design
Tool requirements are plan-specific. The ToymakingPlans listing names a table saw, scroll saw, and hand drill. WoodworkersWorkshop’s plan 31-MD-00073 lists a bandsaw, woodburning tools, table saw, drill, and common hand tools. The Richard Packer listing identifies its larger project as a scrollsaw build, while Lloydswoodtoyplans names an electric hand drill and scroll saw. Treat those as the sellers’ lists for their own plans, not a universal ark-building checklist.
Materials also vary. Plan 31-MD-00073 names maple, mahogany, and pine while permitting other wood choices; FurniturePlans specifies two 1 × 6 × 96-inch boards and one 1 × 4 × 96-inch board. Lee Valley’s plan package includes a bill of materials and cutting list. Use the chosen plan’s own material schedule, because board sizes and quantities cannot safely be transferred between designs.

- Measure the available display or play space against the plan’s finished dimensions, including raised features such as the Richard Packer plan’s rainbow.
- Inventory the required tools and decide whether the plan’s cuts and patterns match your equipment and experience.
- Check whether figures, storage, and removable components are included in the plans and whether they must be made separately.
- Follow the selected plan’s assembly and finishing guidance. The listings do not establish toy-safety compliance or certify any finish as suitable for a child’s toy.
