Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteShort answer: A nitrogen generator is not a standalone box. It is part of a compressed-air and gas-handling system that must be sized for your required purity, flow, pressure, duty cycle and site conditions. PSA and membrane generators use different separation methods; neither is automatically better. The largest operating expense is usually the electricity used by the air compressor, while safety depends on preventing oxygen displacement, routing vents correctly and following the exact equipment manual.
This guide explains what an installation normally includes, how to build a defensible operating-cost estimate, how to choose between PSA and membrane technology, and what a site-specific safety review should cover.

What a nitrogen generator does—and why the installation is a system
A nitrogen generator separates nitrogen from compressed air and supplies it at the pressure and flow required by a process. PSA (pressure swing adsorption) uses an adsorbent that preferentially retains other gases during a pressure cycle. Membrane systems use selective permeation through membrane fibers. The separation technology affects the generator’s air demand, achievable purity, operating profile and maintenance requirements.
The generator itself is only one part of the installation. The illustrated arrangement in the NOVAIR FAQ and Atlas Copco’s overview includes an air compressor, air dryer, filters, an air receiver, the nitrogen generator and a nitrogen receiver. Electrical connections, ventilation, condensate management, pipework, isolation points and controls also have to fit the selected model and the site’s demand profile. Component sizes must come from the generator specification and actual operating data, not from a generic diagram.

Define the application before selecting a generator
Start with the process, not the machine catalogue. Record the following information for the supplier or design engineer:
- Purity: the nitrogen concentration the process needs, including any allowable variation.
- Flow: normal, peak and simultaneous demands, plus the hours and days of operation.
- Delivery pressure: the pressure at the point of use and any pressure drop through distribution piping.
- Operating profile: continuous, intermittent, batch or rapidly changing demand.
- Feed-air conditions: compressor capacity, pressure stability, temperature, moisture, oil carry-over and existing filtration.
- Site constraints: indoor or outdoor location, available floor area, access for service, ambient conditions, ventilation and noise restrictions.
- Expansion: expected future demand and whether a receiver or modular arrangement can accommodate it.
NOVAIR’s FAQ specifically raises questions about air dryers, receiver tanks and ambient conditions because these factors can determine whether a generator performs as intended. A supplier should confirm the complete air treatment and storage arrangement rather than quote a generator in isolation.
PSA versus membrane: how to make the choice
The useful question is not “Which technology is best?” but “Which technology meets this application’s purity, flow and operating requirements with the best whole-system fit?” The manufacturer FAQ asks the same question, and Atlas Copco notes that purity and operating conditions drive the answer.
| Decision axis | What to establish | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Purity | Required nitrogen purity and acceptable variation | The separation method and operating settings must reach the process specification without excessive feed-air use. |
| Flow | Normal and peak nitrogen demand | Undersizing causes pressure or purity problems; oversizing can add unnecessary capital and compressor energy. |
| Pressure and duty | Point-of-use pressure, cycling and operating hours | Pressure, cycling and demand changes affect compressor loading, storage needs and control strategy. |
| Compressed-air quantity and quality | Available compressor capacity, dryer performance and filtration | Poor or unstable feed air can reduce output and increase service needs. |
| Space and environment | Footprint, access, ambient temperature and ventilation | The system needs room for the generator, receivers, filters and safe maintenance. |
| Energy and maintenance | Compressor electricity, consumables, service labor and downtime | These recurring costs can outweigh the generator purchase price over its life. |
| Lifecycle cost | Capital, utilities, maintenance and delivered-gas alternatives | A technology that looks cheaper at purchase may not be cheaper for the site’s actual duty cycle. |
The available evidence does not establish that PSA is always cheaper, more efficient or lower-maintenance than membrane technology. Request performance data at your specified purity, flow and pressure, and compare both options using the same demand profile.

What a complete installation normally requires
1. A stable compressed-air source
The compressor must provide the flow and pressure the generator requires while also serving other plant users. Ask for a duty calculation that includes peak demand, pressure losses and receiver capacity. A fluctuating or undersized compressor can make a correctly sized generator appear to be failing.
2. Drying and filtration
Air treatment protects the separation media, valves and downstream nitrogen quality. The installation overview identifies a dryer and filters upstream of the generator. The correct technology, rating and change-out interval are model-specific; the generator manual should state the required inlet air quality. Include drains and condensate handling where the equipment design requires them.
3. Air and nitrogen receivers
An air receiver can buffer compressor cycling and demand changes. A nitrogen receiver can smooth delivery and provide short-term capacity during peaks. Receiver volume, working pressure, relief protection and location must be selected for the actual system and applicable local requirements. Do not assume a tank shown in a generic illustration is correctly sized for your plant.

Provide the specified floor space, clearances and access for service. Electrical supply, isolation, control signals and any remote alarms must match the selected model. Confirm whether the unit needs a dedicated circuit, heat rejection or special environmental protection. The supplier’s installation drawings should identify connection points and service clearances.

5. Ventilation and exhaust routing
PSA and membrane equipment can discharge oxygen-enriched or oxygen-depleted exhaust, depending on the process and operating state. Route blow-off and product vents to a location where gas cannot accumulate near occupied areas, air intakes, pits or enclosed spaces. AIGA 060/11 recommends addressing ventilation, oxygen concentration alarms or both for indoor installations, along with safe vent routing.
6. A commissioning sequence
- Verify the foundation or floor, access route, clearances and environmental conditions against the equipment manual.
- Install the compressor, dryer, filters and receivers with correctly rated pipework, isolation and relief protection.
- Connect electrical power and controls through qualified personnel, then verify rotation, grounding and alarm circuits as required by the model.
- Connect feed-air, nitrogen-product and exhaust lines, checking that each line is identified and routed to a safe destination.
- Leak-test connections and piping before introducing the equipment to normal service. AIGA guidance specifically calls for leak checks after installation.
- Start the system using the manufacturer’s procedure, allow it to reach the specified operating state and verify purity, pressure, flow and alarms.
- Record baseline readings, filter condition, receiver pressures and alarm settings for future maintenance and troubleshooting.
- Train operators on normal shutdown, emergency isolation, alarm response and the limits of their authorization.
These are planning stages, not a substitute for the selected model’s instructions. Installation and commissioning should be performed by qualified personnel familiar with compressed gas systems and the site’s safety rules.
How to estimate operating cost
No universal monthly cost is supported because electricity rates, compressor efficiency, nitrogen demand and delivered-gas prices vary widely. Atlas Copco identifies compressor electricity as the primary operating expense in its overview. A credible estimate should include:

What the one-to-three-year payback claim means
Atlas Copco presents an approximately one-to-three-year payback period as a possible outcome for on-site generation, depending on consumption volume and local energy costs. It is a conditional vendor estimate, not an independent industry average or a guarantee. Your calculation should compare the generator’s complete installed and recurring cost with your actual delivered-nitrogen spending and should show sensitivity to electricity prices, utilization and maintenance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Nitrogen safety: the hazard is oxygen displacement
For specified CPi-Plus and CPx-Plus models, South-Tek’s safety guidance dated May 7, 2026 states: Nitrogen is not poisonous, but high concentrations displace oxygen and can cause asphyxiation.
The danger is an oxygen-deficient atmosphere that may not be obvious before a person becomes impaired. A leak, vent discharge or failed ventilation system can affect rooms, pits, cabinets or adjacent enclosed areas.
Conduct a site-specific hazard review
AIGA 060/11 discusses oxygen-deficient and oxygen-enriched indoor atmospheres and recommends considering adequate ventilation, oxygen concentration alarms or both. Treat that as industry guidance for the hazard review, not as a universal code statement. The review should map every possible release point, air intake, occupied zone, low point, adjacent room and emergency exit.
- Determine whether the generator and receivers belong indoors or in a ventilated plant area.
- Design exhaust and relief discharge routes so gas does not collect in occupied or poorly ventilated spaces.
- Decide, with competent safety personnel, whether fixed or portable oxygen monitoring is needed and where sensors should be located.
- Set alarm, evacuation, isolation and re-entry procedures; an oxygen monitor does not make an unsafe room safe by itself.
- Post hazard information and restrict access to trained personnel.
- Check for leaks after installation, after maintenance and whenever abnormal pressure or purity behavior suggests one.
Training, authorization and pressurized equipment
South-Tek’s guidance for its TS, CS and S series, dated April 16, 2026, says: Only authorized, trained, and competent personnel should perform installation, operation, maintenance, or repair.
It also notes that storage tanks and connected piping contain pressurized gas. Apply the same discipline to any make or model: isolate and depressurize equipment according to the manual before service, and follow site lockout, permit and confined-space procedures where applicable.

Safe operating practice
- Keep ventilation operating whenever the generator is running, as required by the design.
- Do not block vents, bypass alarms or defeat interlocks to maintain production.
- Investigate unexplained nitrogen consumption, pressure decay, purity loss or repeated alarms promptly.
- Make the operating and maintenance manual available at the equipment and train every shift that may respond to an alarm.
- Coordinate the installation with the site’s emergency plan and the requirements of the applicable jurisdiction.
Maintenance and service costs
There is no universal maintenance interval or price. NOVAIR’s FAQ treats maintenance cost, sieve replacement and air-system questions as model-specific. A vendor FAQ from Compressed Gas Technologies lists filter and valve intervals for its own equipment, but those intervals must not be generalized to another manufacturer. Use the exact manual and supplier schedule for your unit.
| Maintenance area | What to verify in the manual |
|---|---|
| Feed-air filters and dryer | Element rating, differential-pressure limits, drain operation and replacement criteria. |
| Separation media | Sieve or membrane inspection and replacement conditions, including purity or capacity symptoms. |
| Valves and controls | Cycle performance, solenoids, sensors, calibration and alarm testing. |
| Receivers and relief devices | Inspection, drains, relief-device testing and jurisdictional examination requirements. |
| Leaks and pipework | Connections, isolation valves, product piping and exhaust routing. |
Budget both planned service and the cost of lost production during maintenance. Poor feed-air quality, excessive moisture or oil carry-over can shorten component life and raise the total cost even when the generator itself is well maintained. Use qualified personnel where the manufacturer requires it.
Common installation and operating problems
| Symptom | Likely areas to check |
|---|---|
| Purity below specification | Feed-air pressure or quality, filter condition, leaks, demand above rated flow, incorrect settings or separation-media condition. |
| Insufficient nitrogen flow | Compressor capacity, blocked filters, pressure drop, receiver sizing, simultaneous plant demand and vent losses. |
| Frequent alarms or cycling | Unstable air supply, incorrect control settings, sensor faults, temperature or ventilation conditions. |
| Unexpectedly high electricity use | Compressor loading, leaks, excessive purge, high pressure setpoints, poor dryer efficiency or operation far below the intended duty profile. |
| Oxygen alarm or suspected release | Leave the affected area according to the site emergency plan, isolate only if trained and safe to do so, ventilate under the approved procedure, and have competent personnel locate and repair the leak. |
Do not adjust cycle times, bypass safeguards or replace components based on a generic internet interval. Record the symptom, operating conditions, alarm history, pressures, flow and purity, then escalate to the supplier or qualified service team.
