Short version: Figure AI has released a striking video of its Figure 02 humanoid robot unloading clean dishes, putting them away, collecting dirty dishes, loading a dishwasher, adding detergent, and closing the door. The robot is running Helix 02, Figure’s whole-body autonomy system—not a separate robot.
It is a meaningful demonstration of coordinated walking, balance, perception, and manipulation. It is not yet proof that a commercially available household robot can reliably handle every kitchen, fragile dish, spill, person, pet, or unexpected problem.
What the video shows
In the demonstration covered by Futurism on February 1, 2026, a Figure 02 robot appears to perform a complete kitchen routine:
- It navigates around the kitchen and opens the dishwasher.
- It removes clean dishes.
- It places those dishes in cabinets and drawers.
- It returns with dirty dishes.
- It loads the dirty dishes into the dishwasher.
- It adds detergent.
- It closes the dishwasher, reportedly using a movement from its hip.
Futurism described the demonstration as lasting roughly four minutes. Claims that it ran end to end without resets or human intervention come from Figure and have not been independently audited. The footage is therefore best understood as a company-produced autonomy demonstration under controlled conditions.

- Three models, one lightweight platform R1 Air (20 DOF, monocular camera), R1 (26 DOF, binocular camera, head+waist joints), and R1 Edu (26 DOF + SDK/API for programming). All weigh ~29kg / 123cm – one person can lift, move, and fit into a car trunk.
- Easy setup – no coding required for basic use Unbox, power on, and start. Manual teaching feature: physically pose the robot, and it replays the motion. Graphical drag-and-drop programming also available.
- More DOF = more expressive movement 26‑DOF models (R1 / R1 Edu) add head and waist articulation for smoother dance and running. For safety reasons, only basic actions are currently available; advanced movements are not yet released.
- Voice interaction + two color options Responds to English voice commands (music, conversation, photo). Choose Gold or Blue‑White with automotive‑grade gloss paint.
- R1 Edu adds open development SDK/API access for custom programming, simulation platforms, and future Unistore content downloads. Adult use only – under 18 requires adult supervision.
That qualification does not make the result uninteresting. The robot is not merely picking up one plate and placing it in a fixed bin. It is moving through a room, interacting with an appliance, choosing among storage locations, handling multiple objects, and maintaining its balance throughout the sequence.
Helix 02 is the AI system; Figure 02 is the robot
Figure 02: The humanoid robot hardware.
Helix 02: Figure AI’s second-generation full-body autonomy system.
Figure AI: The company developing both the robot platform and its control technology.
In its official announcement, Figure describes Helix 02 as a “single neural system” intended to control the robot’s whole body from visual and other sensor input. The company’s goal is to coordinate locomotion, balance, perception, reaching, grasping, and placement as one longer-horizon activity rather than treating walking and hand movements as unrelated programs.

That distinction matters. Saying “Helix loaded the dishwasher” is shorthand for saying that Figure 02 performed the physical actions while Helix 02 supplied the autonomy and control layer.

Why loading a dishwasher is a serious robotics problem
Dishwasher loading looks like a simple household chore because people solve its many small problems automatically. A robot has to solve them explicitly and repeatedly.
Walking and manipulation happen together
A fixed robotic arm can be optimized for one workcell. A humanoid moving through a kitchen cannot assume that the object, cabinet, or appliance is always directly in front of it. It must walk to the right position, stop without losing balance, reach around doors and racks, and keep its hands aligned while its body moves.
Balance becomes difficult during contact
Opening a dishwasher door, pulling a rack, reaching into a cabinet, and placing an object on a shelf all create forces on the robot. The system must compensate when its center of mass shifts, particularly when it leans forward or uses part of its body to help with a stubborn door.
Every object is different
Plates, bowls, cups, glasses, utensils, and detergent containers have different weights, surfaces, handles, and failure risks. A grasp that is safe for a ceramic plate may be inappropriate for a thin glass or a cup with an unusual handle.
The environment is full of contact
This is not clean pick-and-place. Dishwasher racks, cabinet shelves, hinges, handles, drawers, countertops, and doors all require physical contact. The robot must avoid collisions while applying enough force to open or close something.

Errors compound over time
A misplaced plate can block a cabinet. A utensil in the wrong location can obstruct a rack. A dropped object can change the scene and make the next step unsafe. Successful long-horizon autonomy requires not only completing actions, but recognizing when the plan has stopped working and recovering.
What Figure appears to have done well
The strongest part of the demonstration is the combination of lower-body and upper-body control. The robot walks between work areas while manipulating objects, rather than performing every action from one fixed stance.

Futurism reported movements involving the robot’s foot and hip to help interact with the dishwasher and surrounding furniture. Those compensating movements are important because human kitchens are not designed around a robot’s ideal reach envelope.
The robot also places dishes in more than one storage location and interacts with a real appliance. That makes the sequence a more informative test of autonomy than a single isolated grab.
Figure has reportedly characterized the routine as its longest-horizon and most complex autonomous humanoid task at that point. The company has also said Helix 02 was trained with more than 1,000 hours of human-motion data and simulation-to-real reinforcement learning. Those are company-reported details, not independently verified performance results.

What the video demonstrates—and what it does not
| It demonstrates | It does not establish |
|---|---|
| A successful demonstrated dishwasher routine | Reliable operation in every household kitchen |
| Coordination of walking, balance, and manipulation | That the same result is repeatable across many trials |
| Interaction with cabinets, drawers, and an appliance | Compatibility with arbitrary layouts or appliance designs |
| Longer-horizon object handling | Recovery from dropped, blocked, wet, hot, or broken objects |
| Dish unloading and reloading | Washing dishes, scraping food, or checking cleanliness |
| Figure’s current research direction | Consumer availability, price, warranty, or maintenance cost |
The gap between these columns is the central story. A successful trial proves that a system can complete the shown task in the shown setting. It does not automatically prove generalization, safety, commercial usefulness, or years of daily reliability.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe messy-kitchen test is still ahead
A practical home robot would need to handle conditions that are absent from a polished demonstration:
- A rack is already full or a bowl is wedged against another dish.
- A plate contains dried food or a glass is wet and slippery.
- A cabinet door is partly open or a drawer is obstructed.
- Detergent is missing, spilled, or stored somewhere unexpected.
- The dishwasher door does not open fully.
- A knife, glass, or hot dish is dropped or placed unsafely.
- A child, pet, or person enters the robot’s workspace.
- The floor is wet or the kitchen layout differs from the training environment.
A capable system would need to detect these conditions, pause or adapt safely, and explain what went wrong. Simply repeating a learned motion is not enough.

Humanoid form has an obvious advantage: homes, cabinets, appliances, handles, and tools are already designed for people. A robot with a human-like reach and stance may use existing buildings without requiring a complete kitchen redesign.
But that flexibility comes with complexity. A humanoid has many joints, actuators, sensors, and balance constraints. More moving parts can mean more maintenance and more ways to fail.

For a fixed kitchen, a specialized robotic arm could be cheaper and easier to validate. A wheeled mobile manipulator could use less energy indoors, although it may struggle with stairs, counters, and human-height storage. Appliance improvements—better racks, automatic doors, and automated detergent dispensing—may solve parts of the same problem at much lower cost.
The real commercial question is not whether a humanoid can load a dishwasher. It is whether a costly general-purpose machine is more useful than a cheaper appliance upgrade, specialized robot, or human service once speed, safety, privacy, maintenance, and reliability are included.
What future demonstrations should disclose
The next meaningful evidence would go beyond a single polished run. Viewers should look for:
- Repeatability: Results across many consecutive trials, including failures.
- Variation: Different dishes, loads, cabinets, appliances, and kitchen layouts.
- Recovery: Safe behavior after a dropped object, blocked rack, or missing item.
- Safety data: Performance around people, pets, glassware, knives, hot surfaces, and wet floors.
- Useful speed: Whether the task takes a practical amount of time.
- Operational details: Battery life, maintenance intervals, sensor failures, and service requirements.
- Commercial facts: Whether customers can actually buy or lease the system, and at what price.
Is this a home robot yet?
No. The available evidence describes a research and development demonstration, not a consumer product announcement. There is no evidence in the supplied coverage that Figure 02 with Helix 02 is available for ordinary home purchase, nor that a price, delivery schedule, warranty, or household safety certification has been announced.
Still, the demonstration is more than a novelty clip. Dishwashers expose the hard part of general-purpose robotics: the robot must move, perceive, make contact, manipulate varied objects, and keep going when the task spans an entire room. Helix 02 shows Figure attempting that integrated problem rather than presenting a collection of isolated tricks.
The fair verdict is simple: Helix 02 makes a mundane kitchen chore look like a credible milestone in whole-body robot autonomy, but the distance between a controlled four-minute demonstration and a dependable household appliance remains substantial.
