Google’s Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) received a software update with brightness enhancements and controls. The change first appeared in version 2.1-19 on September 17, 2024; owners can set the active display to adjust automatically or choose a manual brightness level on the thermostat itself.
This is the Learning Thermostat, not Google’s separate 2020 Nest Thermostat. A dim display does not automatically mean the screen is defective: automatic light adjustment, display sleep, Farsight, and low battery can all affect what you see.

What the brightness update changed
Google’s update history says version 2.1-19 included “brightness enhancements and control” for the Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen). That establishes a software-level improvement and user adjustment option; it does not establish a hardware replacement or a guaranteed increase to the display’s maximum brightness. Google’s software update history lists the release date as September 17, 2024.
The version is a historical milestone, not necessarily the one an owner should have today. Google’s published history lists later releases, including version 2.4 dated April 30, 2026. Check for the latest version available to your thermostat rather than trying to remain on 2.1-19.

Confirm which Nest thermostat you have
Google’s official product name is Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen). The similarly named Nest Thermostat, introduced in 2020, is a separate model with its own software history; version 2.1-19’s brightness entry is for the Learning Thermostat (4th gen). Google’s technical specifications identify the fourth-generation model by its 2.68-inch circular LCD display, 600 × 600 resolution, ambient-light sensor, and Soli motion sensor.
Set brightness on the thermostat
Google’s detailed instructions place the control on the device. Menu wording can vary slightly by firmware or support-page presentation, so look for the brightness control in the thermostat’s settings if the label differs.

- Press the thermostat display toward the wall to open its menu.
- Choose Settings, then Device Settings.
- Select Display Brightness.
- Choose Auto or Manual.
- If you chose Manual, turn the dial to the brightness you want, then press the display to save.
Google’s brightness instructions describe Auto as adjusting to the surroundings and Manual as letting you set the level. Google’s documented procedure uses the thermostat itself; the cited instructions do not establish a Google Home app brightness slider.
Auto or Manual?
- Auto adjusts to ambient conditions. It can reduce glare and light in a dark room, but the screen may look dimmer than you prefer or change through the day.
- Manual provides a consistent chosen level and is a useful diagnostic setting if you are checking whether the active display can become bright enough. A high setting may be too bright at night, and Manual does not necessarily change sleep, Farsight, or low-battery behavior.

Nest thermostats normally receive updates automatically over Wi-Fi and the internet. Google distributes them gradually, so two units may not receive the same release at the same time. A manual check is available on the thermostat:

Settings → Version → Check for update
This checks for an available update; it is not a promise that an owner can force an immediate installation. Google lists poor Wi-Fi or internet connectivity among reasons an update may not arrive. It also says an update may be delayed when battery charge is below 3.7 volts. See Google’s update guidance for these conditions.

Auto brightness and room light
The thermostat has an ambient-light sensor, and Auto mode responds to the surroundings. In a dark room, a lower display brightness may be expected rather than evidence that the update failed. Try Manual in ordinary room lighting to compare the active screen.

- The Nest Thermostat is designed to work without a C wire in most homes, but for some systems, including heating only, cooling only, zone controlled, and heat pump systems, you’ll need a C wire or other compatible power accessory
- Nest Thermostat turns itself down when you leave, so you don’t waste energy heating or cooling an empty home. Lock feature: No

- Remote control lets family members change the thermostat temperature from anywhere on a phone, laptop, or tablet[1]
Sleep and wake behavior
Brightness describes how bright the active display appears; it is different from when the display wakes or turns off after inactivity. Google describes model-specific screen behavior in its display wake guidance. If the screen seems dark because it is asleep or slow to wake, changing brightness alone may not address the issue.

The fourth-generation Learning Thermostat has Dynamic Farsight, which changes the information and text size shown depending on viewing context. Farsight is a display mode, not a brightness boost. Google also says Farsight can be disabled until the battery recharges; low-power behavior may affect what appears on screen. See Google’s thermostat display information.
Viewing conditions
Viewing angle, nearby lighting, and whether the thermostat is showing its active temperature screen, a Farsight screen, or a waking transition can change how the display looks. These are practical checks, not proof of a particular fault.
Quick Recap
What to do if the screen remains unusually dark
- Set Display Brightness to Manual and raise it, then compare the active screen in a normally lit room.
- Check Settings → Version → Check for update.
- Confirm the thermostat has a reliable Wi-Fi and internet connection, and leave it powered and connected so a staged update can arrive.
- Check whether sleep or Farsight behavior, rather than the brightness level, explains what you are seeing.
- Look for battery or power-related warnings. Do not open the thermostat, replace its internal battery, or alter HVAC wiring as a brightness remedy.
- If the display is still abnormally dark at the highest Manual setting, flickers, has uneven illumination, or fails to wake, contact Google Nest support. Do not assume another software update will resolve a possible hardware or power issue.
