It can work with Google Assistant through Nanoleaf’s Google Home integration, but compatibility is not guaranteed for every older controller or secondhand unit. The bigger buying caveat: Nanoleaf no longer sells the original panels as new kits. Existing owners can keep using them in the Nanoleaf app; new buyers should weigh the legacy-hardware risk against current alternatives such as Nanoleaf Shapes.
What Nanoleaf Aurora is—and what it is for
“Aurora” is the familiar name for Nanoleaf’s original triangular Light Panels. Nanoleaf’s current documentation calls them Light Panels, says it no longer sells them as new kits, and points new buyers toward Shapes as the newer product line. Nanoleaf says existing Light Panels will continue to work in its app (Nanoleaf Light Panels getting started).

Aurora is best understood as decorative or accent lighting, not a substitute for a room’s main light. Its appeal is less about replacing a ceiling light and more about making a wall a programmable, animated display. The triangular panels can be arranged in custom layouts, and scenes can add color to a gaming area, media space, or background for video calls. The Nanoleaf app supports layout planning and scene customization. Music response requires the relevant Rhythm hardware.

It is distinct from Nanoleaf Canvas, which uses square panels; Lines, which uses illuminated bars; and Elements, which has a more subdued, wood-inspired appearance. Shapes is the newer modular panel family and the closest successor in concept.
#1 Best Overall
- NOT FOR NANOLEAF SHAPES. ORIGINAL AURORA ONLY. These are flat and thin, four pads, no springs. Pull one linker out of your panels and compare it to the photos. If yours has springs, this will not work. Please do not purchase if you have a different model.
- Compatible Models - Direct replacements for Nanoleaf Aurora and Light Panels, NL22 AND NL28 MODELS ONLY. The original triangle panels, sold roughly 2016 to 2020.
- Not Compatible - Shapes Triangles, Mini Triangles, Hexagons, Elements, Canvas, Lines or Blocks. Shapes Triangles look nearly identical from the front, so check the back of your panel first.
- Pack of 12 - Twelve replacement rigid linkers, fully tested for quality and functionality. Restore your Aurora setup without replacing panels. Perfect if you have lost or broken linkers.
- 1:1 Replacements - Engineered to connect panels just like the originals. No tools required and seats flush. Still unsure? Compare your existing linker to the product photos above.
Why Aurora still appeals—and where it falls short
What it does well
- It makes lighting part of the wall design. The panels are more visually prominent than ordinary bulbs or a lightstrip, and their triangular form supports custom arrangements.
- Scenes add movement and color. The app’s scene customization makes the installation useful as décor or ambient lighting rather than only as a static lamp.
- It can respond to music with Rhythm hardware. Check that the Rhythm component is included and working if this is important to you.
- Voice control can simplify routine use. Once a supported unit is linked to Google Home, basic commands can handle power, brightness, and color.
What to consider
- It is legacy hardware. New kits are no longer sold by Nanoleaf, and availability of replacement controllers or accessories through official channels should not be assumed.
- The controller matters. A panel bundle without a working, compatible controller may be unusable even if the panels look intact.
- Installation takes planning. Wall surface, mounting hardware, panel layout, cable routing, and the external power supply all affect the result. A hard-to-reach installation can also make future maintenance inconvenient.
- It is less future-proof than a current system. Aurora depends on its legacy controller and Nanoleaf’s integration; do not assume the original hardware is a Matter device or will pair with every current smart-home setup.
- Network requirements matter. Nanoleaf’s current documentation for listed products specifies 2.4-GHz Wi-Fi and says 5-GHz-only networks are not compatible; check the requirements for the exact product and network (Nanoleaf Shapes product information).
Does Aurora work with Google Assistant?
It can, if the particular legacy unit is supported and links successfully. Nanoleaf documents connecting Nanoleaf devices to Google Home by linking the Nanoleaf service in the Google Home app, and Google lists Nanoleaf among compatible brands. Those general integration instructions do not guarantee that every original Aurora controller, firmware version, or secondhand unit will still pair today (Nanoleaf’s Google Home setup guide; Google Home compatibility and setup guidance).
That distinction matters: compatibility may refer to an account-linked Google Home integration, not local Matter control. Nanoleaf’s Matter guidance treats support as dependent on the specific product and setup, so do not assume an original Aurora is Matter-compatible without verifying the exact hardware and firmware (Nanoleaf Matter and smart-home ecosystem FAQ).

What voice control can do
Nanoleaf lists Google command examples for turning devices on or off, controlling lights in a room, changing brightness, and setting a color. For example:
- “Hey Google, turn on [Device or Scene Name].”
- “Hey Google, turn on the lights in [Room].”
- “Hey Google, turn off [Device].”
- “Hey Google, brighten the lights in [Room].”
- “Hey Google, set [Device] to 50% brightness.”
- “Hey Google, set [Device] to blue.”
These are examples, not a promise that every Aurora scene, animation, music effect, or advanced Nanoleaf feature is selectable by voice. Scene availability can depend on the device generation and how Google Home exposes the scene. Nanoleaf says Google Assistant requires the Google Home app and an active Google Account; Assistant availability varies by language and country (Nanoleaf’s Google Home commands and requirements).

How to connect Aurora to Google Home
Before you start
- Set up the panels, controller, and power supply, and confirm the unit works in the Nanoleaf app.
- Have the Nanoleaf app and account, the Google Home app, and an active Google Account ready.
- Keep the Nanoleaf device and phone on the intended home network; provide a 2.4-GHz network where the device requires it.
- Make sure the controller is powered and online before trying to link accounts.
Link the Nanoleaf service
- Open the Nanoleaf app and verify that the panels respond to app controls.
- Open the Google Home app and tap + or Add.
- Choose Set up device.
- Select Have something already set up?
- Search for and select Nanoleaf, then sign in or authorize the Nanoleaf account when prompted.
- Assign the discovered light to the correct Google Home room.
- Test power, brightness, and color in Google Home, then try a voice command using the device’s exact name.
Nanoleaf documents this account-linking route. Google’s app may show slightly different wording as its interface changes; use the third-party-device option rather than treating the legacy unit as a Matter device (Nanoleaf setup instructions; Google Home setup for devices and services).
After successful linking, the device should appear in Google Home and be assigned to a room. A Google Assistant-enabled speaker, display, or phone can then accept supported commands.

Troubleshoot Google Home connection problems
If Nanoleaf does not appear during setup
- Confirm the Aurora works in the Nanoleaf app. If it does not, resolve the controller, power, or Nanoleaf connection problem first.
- Check that the phone is on the intended home network and that the controller is powered and connected.
- Update the Nanoleaf and Google Home apps.
- If your router uses client isolation or AP isolation, disable it for setup. Google identifies AP isolation as a possible obstacle to Wi-Fi smart-device setup (Google Home setup guidance).
- Use Google Home’s third-party-service linking route. Do not expect the original Aurora to appear as a Matter device unless the exact unit supports it.
- Unlink and relink the Nanoleaf service, and remove stale or duplicate device entries from Google Home if needed.
- Restart the controller, router, and phone. Factory-reset the Aurora only as a last resort: a reset can erase its existing setup and require full re-pairing.
If Google Home sees Aurora but voice control fails
- Give the device a simple, unique name that does not sound like a room name or common command.
- Check that the light and Assistant speaker are assigned to the same Google Home, then say the room name explicitly.
- Test power control before color or scene commands, and check whether Google Home marks the device offline.
- Ask Google Home to synchronize devices if that command is available in your setup.
- If the device remains visible but unresponsive, relink the Nanoleaf account.
If Aurora responds in the Nanoleaf app but not in Google Home, that points to a failure in account linking, the Nanoleaf integration, Google Home’s device record, or third-party services; it does not by itself prove the panels are defective. Nanoleaf notes that third-party integrations can require troubleshooting beyond its support scope (Nanoleaf ecosystem support FAQ).
Is a secondhand Aurora worth buying?
It can make sense if the price reflects the risk and you can verify that the controller, power supply, and app pairing all work. Treat Google Home support as an additional check, not something to infer from the product name. Because Nanoleaf no longer sells original Light Panels as new kits, do not assume official replacement parts will be available if a key component is missing or fails (Nanoleaf Light Panels getting started).

Should you choose Aurora or a current alternative?
| Option | Best for | Important difference |
|---|---|---|
| Original Nanoleaf Light Panels (Aurora) | Existing owners or buyers who specifically want the original triangular look at a suitably low secondhand price. | Legacy product; verify controller, power supply, and pairing. New kits are no longer sold by Nanoleaf. |
| Nanoleaf Shapes | The closest current Nanoleaf successor for modular wall panels. | Current family includes Triangles, Mini Triangles, and Hexagons. Shapes can mix within the family, but do not physically connect to original Light Panels or Canvas. Nanoleaf lists Google Home compatibility and features including music visualization, screen mirroring, touch controls, and schedules (Shapes product information; Nanoleaf Shapes compatibility information). |
| Nanoleaf Canvas | A square, grid-like panel layout with touch-oriented interaction. | Different shape and a separate installation; it does not physically connect to Shapes or original Light Panels (Nanoleaf product-family compatibility information). |
| Nanoleaf Lines | A geometric design made from slim illuminated bars. | Not a panel replacement; its visual effect is line-based rather than triangular (Nanoleaf wall-light collection). |
| Nanoleaf Elements | A quieter, wood-inspired look suited to more subdued décor. | Not a match for Aurora’s saturated color-panel aesthetic (Nanoleaf wall-light collection). |
| Smart bulbs or lightstrips | Practical room lighting, low-cost replacement, easy relocation, or no permanent wall installation. | Generally do not create Aurora’s distinctive wall-art effect. |
Shapes is the most direct alternative if you want a current Nanoleaf panel system. Do not buy it expecting to extend an Aurora layout: the physical connectors are not cross-compatible. Lines and Elements suit different visual priorities, while bulbs or strips are more practical when illumination and easy replacement matter more than wall art.
