Nemours describes the unit as bringing maternal-fetal and newborn expertise together at one hospital. The “Best Health Care” recognition refers to an Engineering News-Record (ENR) construction-project award—not a ranking of clinical outcomes or proof that the unit is superior to other hospitals.
What is the Advanced Delivery Unit?
The Advanced Delivery Unit is part of Nemours’ Institute for Maternal Fetal Health at Nemours Children’s Hospital, Delaware, in Wilmington. Nemours presents it as an option for expectant mothers whose babies may need treatment soon after birth. The goal, according to Nemours, is to coordinate maternal and newborn care at the same location.
Nemours says its maternal-fetal medicine experts and fetal interventionists support care from diagnosis through treatment and delivery. The unit provides care before, during and after delivery, and the care team works with each family to make a delivery plan. This is a description of the service model, not a guarantee that every treatment or specialist will be appropriate or available for every pregnancy.

ENR describes the work as a 26,000-square-foot renovation that transformed active hospital space into an integrated department. Its project-profile specifications list:

ENR lists Nemours Children’s Hospital as the owner, Turner Construction Co. as submitter and construction manager-at-risk, and Perkins & Will as lead design firm. Its profile says the project followed an accelerated 18-month delivery schedule, including a 10-month construction schedule.

Building inside an operating hospital
ENR says construction took place in an active hospital tower, requiring controls for noise and vibration, coordination around impacts on occupied floors, and shutdown planning involving utilities and medical gases. ENR reports that the team maintained the owner’s schedule, reached first patient occupancy as planned and stayed on budget. Those are project-delivery claims, not evidence about clinical results.
What should families expect around delivery?
Nemours’ general family guidance says the delivery team includes an OB/GYN, an anesthesiologist and nurses, with neonatal clinicians supporting the baby after birth. It gives typical hospital stays of one or two days after vaginal birth and three or four days after cesarean birth. These are general estimates, not a prediction for an individual patient; actual care and length of stay depend on clinical circumstances.

On October 22, 2025, Nemours reported that the unit had welcomed 300 babies. That is a dated milestone, not a current birth total.
