The “Nedlands supermarket set to be bulldozed” headline referred to the former Captain Stirling Shopping Centre at 90 Stirling Highway, where an IGA once operated. Demolition was reported as underway by late 2023, and the City of Nedlands approved commercial development for the site in February 2025. That is separate from Nedlands Square at 80 Stirling Highway, where Woolworths opened in September 2026.
Which supermarket was set to be demolished?
It was the former IGA in the Captain Stirling Shopping Centre at 90 Stirling Highway. Aldi acquired the site in 2015. PerthNow reported on 8 September 2023 that demolition was expected to begin in the coming weeks; subsequent reporting said demolition was underway by late 2023. The headline described a development story at that time, not a current prediction that the building is still standing or awaiting demolition. PerthNow’s September 2023 report
What is planned for the 90 Stirling Highway site?
A Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage document dated 16 December 2024 described a proposed centre anchored by Aldi, with six smaller supporting tenancies. The proposal was designed to connect with the Woolworths project across Florence Road. The City of Nedlands development register records approval for commercial development at 90 Stirling Highway on 11 February 2025. Approval confirms planning permission; it does not establish that construction has started or that an opening date has been announced. How is this different from Nedlands Square?
Nedlands Square is a separate development at 80 Stirling Highway, associated with the Captain Stirling Hotel site. It is not the former IGA/Aldi site. The City of Nedlands announced that Nedlands Square officially opened on 30 September 2026, with Woolworths and 22 specialty stores. The City also described the centre as having approximately 7,600 square metres of commercial floor space. Those figures apply to Nedlands Square, not the Aldi proposal at 90 Stirling Highway. The City recorded approval for Nedlands Square on 27 March 2025. Its planning material lists a supermarket, specialty shops and other uses, as well as works to the existing Captain Stirling Hotel, a public laneway and demolition of four nearby houses. These details concern the 80 Stirling Highway project, not the redevelopment at 90 Stirling Highway. City of Nedlands planning information

It recorded 19 submissions: 13 in support, three objections and three general comments. This consultation count also applies only to Nedlands Square, not the Aldi site. The confirmed supermarket opening in the area is Woolworths at Nedlands Square, 80 Stirling Highway; it should not be mistaken for the proposed Aldi centre at 90 Stirling Highway.
