Choose a light bulb by matching its lumens to the brightness you want, its base and dimensions to the fixture, and its color temperature to the room. Then check whether it is rated for an enclosed fixture and compatible with your dimmer, if either applies. Watts describe electrical input—not brightness.
How do I choose a light bulb?
- Choose brightness by lumens. Use the old bulb’s brightness as a guide, or consult the lumen examples below. Do not match wattage alone: an LED can provide similar light while drawing fewer watts.
- Match the base and size. Check the fixture label or old bulb for the socket type, then compare the replacement’s shape and dimensions. Some LED bulbs are wider near the base than incandescent bulbs and may not fit smaller fixtures.
- Select a color temperature. Kelvin (K) indicates the light’s appearance: lower values look warmer; higher values look cooler.
- Check fixture and control compatibility. For a recessed or covered fixture, confirm that the bulb is rated for enclosed-fixture use. If you use a dimmer, verify both that the bulb is dimmable and that it is compatible with the dimmer.
- Consider color rendering when it matters. The color rendering index (CRI) describes how colors appear under a light source. Check the product specifications if accurate color is important for the task.
These checks matter because the bulb and fixture work together: fixture design and the bulb’s power supply affect performance and energy use. See the U.S. Department of Energy’s light-bulb purchasing guidance and LED basics.
How many lumens do I need?
Lumens measure visible light output; watts measure electrical input. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) lists these examples for general-purpose, A-type replacement bulbs with E26 bases. The watt ranges are examples of listed LED replacements, not specifications that apply to every bulb or fixture.
| Incandescent brightness comparison | Approximate light output | Listed LED replacement range |
|---|---|---|
| 40-watt incandescent | 450 lumens | 4.5–7 watts |
| 60-watt incandescent | 800 lumens | 5.9–10.5 watts |
| 75-watt incandescent | 1,100 lumens | 9.5–14 watts |
| 100-watt incandescent | 1,600 lumens | 10.5–18 watts |
These figures come from DOE Federal Energy Management Program guidance updated in June 2023. Treat them as brightness-class comparisons, not a guarantee that a particular bulb will fit or perform in your fixture. See the DOE examples and purchasing specifications.

What does 2700K mean?
Color temperature is measured in kelvins. A lower number looks warmer, with a more yellow appearance; a higher number looks cooler. DOE’s examples include 2,700 K for warm light and 4,100 K for cool light. For a replacement, compare the Kelvin rating with other bulbs in the same room if you want their color to look consistent. DOE explains the scale in its consumer lighting guidance.
What should I check for dimmers and enclosed fixtures?
Dimmer use
A bulb’s packaging or product specifications should say whether it is dimmable. Confirm compatibility with the specific dimmer too; a dimmable label alone does not establish that it will work correctly with every control.

- DESIGN: These non-dimmable LED light bulbs have a color temperature of 2700 kelvin, which produces a soft white color rendering ideal for productivity and welcoming spaces.
Enclosed fixtures
Check for an explicit enclosed-fixture rating before installing an LED in a fully or partly enclosed fixture. Heat trapped around a bulb can affect LED performance and life, so do not assume an ordinary LED is suitable just because it fits the socket.
When does color rendering matter?
CRI is a measure of how a light source renders colors. It can be useful when choosing bulbs for tasks where color appearance matters. DOE’s purchasing guidance states a CRI of 80 or greater for ENERGY STAR-qualified bulbs in that guidance; this is a program-specific threshold, not a universal requirement for every light bulb. Check current program information before relying on a certification label, since program status can change.

What about LED efficiency standards?
In a 2024 announcement, DOE said a finalized U.S. general-service-lamp efficiency standard raises the level described for the most common bulbs from 45 to more than 120 lumens per watt. That is a regulatory figure, not a way to identify whether a particular bulb is suitable for your fixture. Applicability depends on the product category and current rule status; consult DOE’s 2024 announcement for its stated context.
