Yes—but treat it as a possible scald hazard, not just a comfort problem. Stop using the shower if the water could burn you. On some valves, a model-specific temperature-limit stop can be adjusted; if the water stays hot across the handle’s range, the valve may not be blending hot and cold water correctly and needs diagnosis.

What to do first

  • Do not test potentially scalding water on your skin. Avoid using the shower until its temperature is safe.
  • If you can identify the shower control’s make and model, find that exact model’s official instructions before adjusting anything. Some valves have a temperature-limit stop beneath the handle, but its location and adjustment direction vary by model and series.
  • If you cannot identify the valve, the adjustment is inaccessible, or you are not comfortable with plumbing work, contact a licensed plumber.

When a temperature-limit adjustment may help

A limit stop on some shower valves restricts how far the handle turns toward hot. If the stop is misadjusted, the handle may not provide the intended temperature range. The correct procedure is specific to the installed valve; do not copy directions for a different brand or series.

Delta’s instructions for its valve series call for checking the outlet temperature with a thermometer and state: “MAKE SURE COLD WATER FLOWS FROM THE VALVE FIRST.” Follow the instructions for your exact model and applicable local code limits. Read Delta’s temperature-limit-stop instructions.

If it stays hot throughout the handle’s range

A handle adjustment may not address a valve that is failing to blend cold and hot water. Possible causes include a problem with the mixing or pressure-balance mechanism, but the symptom alone does not identify a failed part. A cartridge may be a service part for some valve models, not a universal fix.

#1 Best Overall
Delta Faucet R10000-UNBX MultiChoice Universal Tub and Shower Valve Body for Tub Faucet Trim Kits
  • COMPLETE FLEXIBILITY: Delta's MultiChoice Universal Valve gives you the flexibility to upgrade or change your shower trim without altering plumbing behind the wall because it is compatible with most Delta single-function (13 or 14 series), dual-function (17 series), or dual-function themostatic (17T series) trim kits
  • RECOMMENDED USE: Compatible to meet the needs for the most commonly used plumbing methods and is ideal for shower units with bath tubs and tub spouts
  • UNIVERSAL CONNECTION OPTIONS: 1/2-inch universal inlets accept 1/2-inch copper, 1/2-inch iron pipe, PEX or CPVC adapters
  • VALVE BODY ONLY: Valve body only, required cartridge is included with your Delta shower trim of choice
  • EASY TO CLEAN: Delta kitchen faucets with Touch-Clean spray holes allow you to quickly and easily wipe away calcium and lime build-up with a touch of a finger, while the SpotShield finish resists water spots and fingerprints

Before buying a replacement cartridge, identify the installed valve and confirm the part matches it. Manufacturer troubleshooting and service guidance is model-specific; for example, Moen’s guidance for certain shower valves and Kohler’s service-part information depend on the product. A plumber can determine whether the appropriate remedy is adjustment, service, or replacement.

How hot is too hot?

Temperature figures from public agencies apply in different contexts; they are not a diagnosis of why a shower is stuck hot or a single universal household setting.

  • The UK Health and Safety Executive’s recommendation to limit bath or shower water to 44°C with thermostatic mixer valves applies to care settings where vulnerable people may be at risk; it is not a universal household rule. HSE: Scalding and burning.

When to call a plumber

Arrange professional help if the shower remains hot at every setting, you cannot safely follow the correct manufacturer procedure, or you are unsure whether the control is working properly. A licensed plumber can inspect the valve and advise whether adjustment, repair, or replacement is appropriate.
