The “3-homes rule” gives every possession one of three destinations: an everyday home close to where it is used, a seasonal home that protects it outside prime living space, or an exit home where it waits briefly before donation, recycling, sale or disposal. The rule is practical rather than scientific: the source describing it reports no study, sample size or measured success rate.
Max Wilson, a storage expert and CEO and cofounder of Pocket Storage, outlined the approach in an explainer published by House Beautiful on October 16, 2026. Its value is in making storage decisions consistently, especially when a home feels full but many possessions are still useful.

What the 3-homes rule means
Instead of asking whether an item should stay or go, assign it a destination based on how and when you use it:
| Home | Best for | Storage decision |
|---|---|---|
| Everyday home | Items used daily or very frequently | Keep them convenient and near their point of use. |
| Seasonal home | Items needed only a few times a year | Group and protect them in less valuable storage space. |
| Exit home | Items you no longer want | Keep them in a defined temporary holding area and arrange prompt removal. |
The key test differs for each category. Everyday storage should minimize effort; seasonal storage should balance protection with retrieval; exit storage should make leaving the house fast and certain.

How to create an everyday home
Put storage where the action happens
Locate an item’s home near the place you use it. Frequently worn coats belong on hooks by the entrance rather than in a distant wardrobe. Bread can go in a bread bin on or immediately beside the kitchen worktop. In a construction or renovation plan, this principle can guide the position of hooks, shallow cabinets, drawers and utility shelving before the room is finished.
Remove unnecessary steps
Wilson’s practical warning is that storage fails when putting something away becomes an obstacle: “If putting the hairdryer away means taking out a basket, lifting a lid and untangling three other cables, don’t be surprised when it stays on the dressing table. Something you use most mornings shouldn’t require a small excavation.”

How to organize a seasonal home
Keep related equipment together
Seasonal possessions can remain in the house without occupying the cupboard you open every morning. Group complete sets: camping equipment should include the tent, sleeping bags and other camping kit in one location; holiday decorations should stay together; out-of-season toys or sports equipment should form identifiable collections.
Wilson notes that “keeping something and keeping it within arm’s reach are two different decisions.” Before storing a group, ask when it will next be used, how much protection it needs and how difficult it will be to retrieve.
Use protected, clearly labelled storage
Clear storage bins with lids are a straightforward option for seasonal belongings because they protect contents while showing what is inside. Label each container with a specific description such as “camping—summer” or “winter decorations,” not “miscellaneous.” Place the group in a loft, garage, under-bed area or other suitable location that is out of prime daily circulation but still reachable when the season arrives.

Do not scatter one set across several storage zones. Wilson describes the problem directly: when packing for a camping trip, you do not want the tent under the bed, another item behind the Christmas tree and the rest in a box marked “miscellaneous.” A little planning at storage time prevents a lengthy search later.
How to make an exit home actually work
Define a small holding area
An exit home is not a permanent corner for indecision. Choose one limited spot—a sturdy bag, crate or shelf—for items awaiting donation, recycling, sale or disposal. Keeping the area small prevents unwanted possessions from spreading back into useful storage.
Schedule the removal immediately
Pair the decision with an action: book a charity drop-off, arrange a local donation pickup, list an item for sale with a deadline, or check the relevant recycling and disposal route. Availability varies by location, so confirm the service before setting the date.

Wilson’s test is simple: “Deciding to donate something is a start, but it hasn’t freed up any space until it leaves.” He recommends keeping donations together, putting the drop-off in your diary and avoiding another rummage through the bag. Otherwise, the same item can be reconsidered repeatedly instead of exiting the home.
A room-by-room way to apply the rule
- Choose one room or storage zone. Work in a defined area rather than emptying the whole house at once.
- Identify the item’s use pattern. Daily-use items need an everyday home; occasional items need a seasonal home; unwanted items need an exit home.
- Assign a physical destination. Check that the space is near the point of use for everyday items, protective and grouped for seasonal items, or clearly limited for exit items.
- Fix friction. Move everyday storage closer, split tangled cables, replace vague labels and keep complete seasonal sets together.
- Complete the exit action. Put the donation, recycling, sale or disposal step on a calendar and remove the items as scheduled.
What the rule can—and cannot—promise
The method offers a clear decision framework and practical storage guidance. It does not establish that homes following it become clutter-free, nor does the October 16, 2026 explainer provide a quantified improvement, success percentage or controlled comparison. Results depend on the home’s available storage, the number of occupants and whether the exit steps are completed.
Its strongest benefit is operational: every possession has a stated destination, daily items require less effort to put away, seasonal items stop consuming prime space, and unwanted items have a defined route out.
