Rain usually doesn’t create garden mushrooms from scratch. It gives fungi already living in soil, mulch, or decaying wood the moisture they need to produce visible fruiting bodies. The mushroom is temporary; most of the fungus remains underground or within its food source as a network of fine threads called mycelium.
Why do mushrooms appear after rain?
Many fungi can persist in soil for years. When conditions become favorable—often after prolonged wet or humid weather—they may form mushrooms to release spores. The mushroom is the reproductive structure, not the whole organism. Its spores can be carried elsewhere by wind, rain, or wildlife, while the mycelium remains in the soil or organic material.
Rain is a common cue, but the precise conditions that prompt fruiting vary by species. Mushrooms often fade as the weather turns warmer and drier, then may reappear during another favorable spell.
What are mushrooms feeding on in a garden bed?
Many garden mushrooms belong to decomposer fungi. Their mycelium breaks down organic material such as decaying mulch, dead roots, buried wood, or an old stump. A cluster appearing in one spot can therefore point to decomposing material nearby, though the mushroom alone may not reveal exactly what it is.

- BEGINNER MUSHROOM CULTIVATION: Also known as the "Garden Giant," Wine Cap (Stropharia rugoso-annulata) is a delicious mushroom with a mild, earthy flavor reminiscent of artichokes and potatoes. This mushroom colonizes quickly and yields reliable flushes, making it suitable for beginners
- GROW MUSHROOMS IN YOUR GARDEN: Wine Cap can fruit in as little as two months and will produce in the same bed for several years. Fresh woody material (like hardwood chips) can be added each year to maintain the health of the bed. Inoculated material from one bed can also be used as spawn to inoculate new beds
- OUTDOOR USE ONLY: Wine cap sawdust spawn is only recommended for use in outdoor beds
- LOG CULTIVATION NOT SUPPORTED: Please note that Wine cap does not grow on logs and requires outdoor bed cultivation methods
- PROPER STORAGE INSTRUCTIONS: Remove it from the shipping box as soon as possible. Then, unfold the top of the bag, making room for air space. Check and confirm that the filter patch is not obstructed to help the organism breathe and continue to thrive
Fungi also include beneficial root associates and plant parasites. The visible mushroom does not identify which kind is present or establish the overall quality of the soil.
Do mushrooms mean the garden is unhealthy?
Not by themselves. Most mushrooms found in ordinary lawns and garden beds do not damage nearby plants. Their presence shows that a fungus has suitable conditions and resources for fruiting; it is not a diagnosis of plant disease or a guarantee of especially healthy soil.

If a nearby plant is declining, assess its symptoms separately rather than blaming the mushroom. A mushroom’s appearance alone is not enough to identify a species or determine whether it is affecting a tree, shrub, or other plant.
Should you remove mushrooms from the garden?
Removal is optional when mushrooms are not a safety concern or an eyesore. The main practical reason to act promptly is that children or pets might eat them: some mushrooms are poisonous, and a casual yard identification cannot establish that one is safe. UC IPM notes that distinguishing edible from poisonous mushrooms requires expertise and that there are no simple tests for poisonous species.

If you want to clear them, remove the visible fruiting bodies by hand, with a shovel or rake, or by mowing where appropriate. Dispose of them where children and pets cannot reach them. This reduces the mushrooms you can see, but it does not kill the underground mycelium, so more may emerge while conditions remain favorable.
Fungicide is generally unnecessary for ordinary garden mushrooms and will not eliminate the fungus. The mushrooms may stop appearing when conditions dry or when the food source is exhausted; until then, they can return.

When should you investigate further?
If plants near the mushrooms are also showing decline, treat that as a separate garden problem. Fungi vary widely, and a general mushroom sighting is not enough to diagnose root damage or identify a plant pathogen. Look at the plant’s symptoms and seek a suitable local diagnosis if needed.
