Neither is a universal space or cost winner. Choose by measuring the room in both bed states, checking the structure and access each option needs, and comparing complete project quotes.
How the two beds use space

Measure before choosing
Murphy bed: check the open and closed states
Measure the wall for the cabinet, including its width, height, and depth. Then measure the bed’s open projection and the clearance needed to use it. A product page from Murphy Wall-Beds Hardware Inc. lists one vertical configuration at 89 1/2 inches wide, 88 3/16 inches high, and 15 7/8 inches deep when closed, with an open projection of 89 1/2 inches. Those are dimensions for that configuration, not standard dimensions for Murphy beds generally. Check the manufacturer’s product specifications for the model under consideration.
Include the cabinet in your floor plan: folding the bed away does not make the wall or the cabinet disappear. The benefit is that the zone the open bed occupies can serve another use while the bed is stowed.
Loft: check height, access, and the space below
Check ceiling volume, platform dimensions, headroom, and whether the area beneath the platform will actually be useful for your planned furniture or activities. Include the footprint and landing for stairs or a ladder, rather than counting the space beneath the mattress as automatically usable.

Loft dimensions and access requirements are not universal. A 2024 New Mexico code amendment specifies a minimum loft floor area of 35 square feet and a minimum of 5 feet in any horizontal dimension. These are requirements in that amendment, not general rules for tiny houses elsewhere. Review the locally adopted code and confirm which rules apply to your project. Compare the full cost, not just the bed
The available product and code sources do not establish a like-for-like installed-cost winner. A wall-bed product price is not a useful comparison with a custom loft unless both estimates cover the same sleeping capacity and comparable scope.

- For a Murphy bed: include the cabinet, mechanism, suitable mattress, structural anchoring, and assembly or installer charges.
- For a loft: include platform framing, stairs or ladder, guardrails, and any construction needed to make the area below useful. Account for storage or activities displaced by the access footprint.
Request project-specific quotes that state what materials, finish, access, and installation work are included. A custom-built loft and a manufactured loft frame are different scopes; identify which one you are comparing.

Using a Murphy bed
Expect to open and close the bed as part of the room’s daily routine. Check the manufacturer’s rules for bedding, mattress weight, and thickness before purchase; requirements differ between mechanisms.

For its own system, Murphy Wall-Beds Hardware Inc. recommends an inner-coil or spring mattress weighing no more than 75 pounds. The company lists a maximum mattress thickness of 10 inches with Regular-height legs or 12 inches with Extended legs, and does not recommend all-foam, latex, gel, or Tempur-Pedic mattresses for that system. Verify specifications for the exact hardware model rather than applying these limits to other brands. See the manufacturer’s mattress guidance.
Using a loft bed
Climbing is part of every trip to bed. Consider whether stairs or a ladder are comfortable for everyone who will use the loft, including at night or during illness or injury. Plan safe access and guardrails. Texas A&M University Residence Life says, “Safety guard rails are highly recommended for ALL spring heights.” That is guidance for elevated residence-life bed frames, not a substitute for building-code requirements in a tiny house. Installation and safety checks
Before installing a Murphy bed
- Confirm the wall and layout accommodate the cabinet and full open projection.
- Verify that the prescribed anchoring locations can connect to structural members; wall finish or cabinetry alone does not establish adequate support.
- Follow the chosen system’s installation and safety instructions, including its mattress limits.
For its vertical bed, Murphy Wall-Beds Hardware Inc. specifies attachment at the top using three L-brackets into structural members such as studs. Its FAQ estimates two people and about 5–8 hours for assembly. Both requirements and the time estimate are specific to that manufacturer’s system; they are not universal installation instructions or a general labor estimate. Check the manufacturer’s assembly guidance.
Before building or buying a loft
- Confirm the platform, headroom, access, and landing work for the actual occupants and room.
- Include guardrails and safe access in the design.
- Check the building code adopted by the local jurisdiction before fixing dimensions or construction details.
Which is the better fit?
- Consider a Murphy bed when you need the main floor to change functions during the day and occupants would rather not climb to bed. It still requires a suitable wall, clear deployment area, and structural attachment.
- Consider a loft when the house has useful vertical space and regular occupants are comfortable with elevated sleeping access. The platform stays in place, and stairs or a ladder consume some of the surrounding footprint.
These are layout tradeoffs, not results from comparative user testing. The available sources do not establish a measured winner for comfort, total floor area gained, or lifetime cost. A North Carolina State University repository study documents both sleeping lofts and Murphy beds in some tiny-house plans, but does not provide a head-to-head performance or cost trial.
