The 480-metre Sabarmati River bridge in Ahmedabad has been completed as part of India’s Mumbai–Ahmedabad Bullet Train project, The Indian Express reported on October 3, 2026, attributing the update to the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL). The milestone applies to one structure on the corridor—not completion or opening of the bullet train line.
Where the bridge is and what it connects
The bridge crosses the Sabarmati River between the planned Sabarmati and Ahmedabad bullet train stations. It is approximately 1 km from Sabarmati station and 4 km from Ahmedabad station, alongside the Western Railway’s Ahmedabad–Delhi main line, according to The Indian Express’s October 3, 2026 report.
Its position makes it one of the corridor’s major river crossings in Ahmedabad. The report says the Mumbai–Ahmedabad corridor is planned to have 25 river bridges in total: 21 in Gujarat and four in Maharashtra. Following this bridge’s completion, 18 of Gujarat’s 21 were reported complete.
Bridge dimensions and span layout
The structure is 480 metres long and approximately 36 metres tall—about 118 feet, or roughly the height of a 12-storey building. It is supported by eight circular piers, each 6 to 6.5 metres in diameter. Four piers are within the riverbed, two are at the banks, and two sit outside the banks.

Its seven spans are arranged as follows:
- Five spans, each 76 metres long
- Two spans, each 50 metres long
The Indian Express reported that many river bridges on the corridor generally use spans of around 40 metres. The longer spans at Sabarmati reduce the number of piers needed in the riverbed and are intended to limit obstruction to the waterway; this describes the reported design rationale, not an independent assessment of environmental impact.
How the Sabarmati bridge was built
NHSRCL’s April 27, 2026 construction brief describes a balanced cantilever method. Crews cast segments at the site and assembled them outward from each pier, joining successive segments with post-tensioning. The method advances in balance from the supports rather than requiring the full span to be assembled on temporary supports across the river.

The April brief said each span comprised 23 segments. At that point, all foundation and substructure work was complete and three of the 76-metre spans had been completed, while superstructure work was still underway. The later October completion report supersedes that dated progress description for the bridge’s overall status.
NHSRCL also said it installed Hume-pipe culverts in a temporary embankment alongside a natural discharge channel to allow water movement during construction. That is the corporation’s account of the construction measure; the cited material does not independently evaluate its environmental effects.

How this milestone fits the wider corridor
The bridge is one component of a much larger project. NHSRCL’s August 27, 2025 corridor update described the Mumbai–Ahmedabad High Speed Rail corridor as 508 km long: 352 km in Gujarat and Dadra & Nagar Haveli, and 156 km in Maharashtra. It listed 12 planned stations—eight in Gujarat and four in Maharashtra. Those figures are dated project context, not a current construction-status update.
The timeline shows progress on this individual crossing: NHSRCL reported ongoing superstructure work in April 2026, and the bridge was reported complete in October. It does not establish when the entire corridor will be finished or begin service.
