Short answer: no. Philips Hue’s MotionAware can replace a dedicated indoor Hue Motion Sensor in some rooms, but only when you have a Hue Bridge Pro, at least three compatible Hue lights, and a layout that gives the system a useful sensing area. For a single room, a doorway, an outdoor location, or daylight-sensitive automation, the conventional sensor can still be the better choice.
What MotionAware actually does
MotionAware turns compatible Hue lights into an area-level motion-detection system. Instead of using the infrared sensing hardware found in a conventional PIR motion sensor, it monitors changes in the Zigbee signals exchanged between Hue lights. Philips Hue documents MotionAware as an exclusive feature of the Hue Bridge Pro.

A MotionAware area requires three or four compatible Hue lights. You select the lights that define the area, calibrate sensitivity in the Hue app, choose when the area is active, and assign the lights that should respond. Philips Hue currently describes support for up to four motion areas; check the current app and feature documentation because limits and controls can change. See the Hue feature page for the current description.

This is not the same as every bulb becoming an independent motion sensor. Detection depends on several lights working together, their placement, the room’s geometry, and calibration.

MotionAware versus the Hue Motion Sensor
| Requirement | MotionAware | Hue Indoor Motion Sensor |
|---|---|---|
| Hub | Hue Bridge Pro required | Works with a standard Hue Bridge |
| Detection hardware | Changes in Zigbee signals between compatible lights | Dedicated wireless PIR sensor |
| Minimum lighting setup | Three or four compatible Hue lights per area | One sensor can control lights in a room or zone |
| Placement | Determined by the positions of the lights | Can be mounted where movement actually occurs |
| Daylight sensing | No dedicated daylight sensor | Includes a daylight sensor |
| Outdoor use | Not a replacement for an outdoor sensor | Use the separate Hue Outdoor Motion Sensor |
| Power | Uses the Hue lights and Bridge Pro | Battery-powered |
The dedicated Hue Motion Sensor is still valuable because it can be aimed or positioned independently from the lights. That matters at a front door, stair landing, hallway entrance, or other point where movement needs to be detected precisely.
Is MotionAware free?
For automatic Hue lighting, Philips Hue presents MotionAware as a Bridge Pro feature rather than a feature that requires a separate Secure subscription. However, security functions are a different matter. Philips Hue’s Secure plan comparison connects “motion aware: use lights as sensors” with Hue Secure functionality and subscription-related security features.

- WHAT’S IN THE BOX: One outdoor smart motion sensor with a large 160-degree detection area; perfect for your garage, porch, patio, front doors, backyard, front yard, driveway, sidewalk and more
- REQUIRES A HUE BRIDGE: Unlock the power of Hue and enjoy automations, control from anywhere, and a secure, stable connection that won’t drain your Wi-Fi, use Matter to connect your smart home devices
- AUTOMATIC LIGHT CONTROL: Outdoor motion sensor turns on the lights when somebody passes by; controls indoor and outdoor Hue lights
- BATTERY-POWERED DESIGN: The outdoor motion sensor light allows for simple power replenishment
- SET UP: Mount the motion sensor for lights on a flat wall, or on the inner or outer corner of a wall or post
In practical terms, distinguish between:
- Lighting automation: movement turns Hue lights on or off.
- Security monitoring: notifications, alarms, camera features, or other security functions may require compatible Secure hardware and a plan.
MotionAware is not a camera. It does not provide video evidence, object classification, or the same event history as a security camera.

The cost decision
At the time of the supplied research, U.S. list-price signals were approximately:
Rank #3
- Note: SNZB-03P needs to be used with Zigbee Hub
- 【5-Sec Faster Detection】Automatically turn the lights on immediately when you pass by, and turn off the light after you leave, the shortest time can reach 5 seconds, helping you save energy
- 【3-Year Battery Life】Powered by CR2477 battery extends the battery life to over 3 years, eliminating concerns about frequent battery replacements
- 【Zigbee 3.0 Compatible】Supports Zigbee hubs using the Zigbee 3.0 protocol, such as SONOFF NSPanel Pro, SONOFF iHost, SONOFF ZB Bridge Pro, SONOFF ZBDongle-E, and Echo Plus 2nd…
- 【Local Smart Scene】Even if your WiFi network crashes, you can still activate Zigbee local scenes as long as your Zigbee devices are powered on
- Hue Bridge Pro: $139.99
- Standard Hue Bridge: $69.99
- Hue Indoor Motion Sensor: $48.99
- Hue Outdoor Motion Sensor: $54.99
These are manufacturer price signals, not guaranteed current prices, and can vary by country, retailer, availability, and promotions. The important comparison is not simply a $139.99 Bridge Pro versus a roughly $49 sensor. A Bridge Pro is a hub upgrade that also increases system capacity and adds other features. Philips Hue lists support for up to 150 lights and 50 accessories on Bridge Pro, compared with approximately 50 lights and 12 accessories for the standard Bridge; see the Hue Bridge buying guide.
If you already own Bridge Pro, MotionAware may avoid buying another sensor. If you own a standard Bridge and only need motion-triggered lighting in one room, buying the Indoor Motion Sensor is normally the more economical route.

- CONTROL LIGHTS WITH A CLICK: A simple touch of the smart button is enough to turn your lights on and off, cycle through scenes, and more. Press and hold to dim or brighten the space
- GET THE BEST LIGHT THROUGHOUT THE DAY: The wireless light switch button uses the Time-based light function by default, giving you the best light for each moment of the day
- CUSTOMIZE IN THE APP: Set the Rooms or Zone your button controls, adjust settings to remote control lights or start an automation, choose scenes you want for each time slot, and more in the Hue app
- START/STOP AUTOMATIONS: Start or stop an automation created in the Automations tab with a simple press on your PHILIPS Hue Switch
- FLEXIBLE, WIRELESS MOUNTING: Use the included adhesive to mount the Hue button around your home — or place it on any magnetic surface.
Who should use MotionAware?
- You already have a Hue Bridge Pro.
- The target room contains at least three compatible Hue lights.
- The lights are spread around the room rather than clustered together.
- Your main goal is automatic lighting, not precision security detection.
- You want to avoid mounting a sensor or replacing sensor batteries.
- You are building a large Hue installation and can use Bridge Pro’s greater capacity.
Three lights are a minimum requirement, not a guarantee of identical performance to a dedicated sensor. A ceiling light and two nearby lamps may create a less useful sensing arrangement than lights distributed across a room. Walk through the space from the directions that matter and adjust sensitivity if the results are inconsistent.
Who should still buy the Hue Motion Sensor?
- You have a standard Hue Bridge and do not need the other benefits of Bridge Pro.
- You have fewer than three suitable Hue lights in the room.
- You need the sensor positioned independently of the light fixtures.
- You want the dedicated daylight sensor for light-level-aware automation.
- You need predictable detection at a doorway, stairwell, hallway, or narrow approach.
- You need outdoor coverage. Use the Hue Outdoor Motion Sensor for an exterior location.
Philips Hue says most products support MotionAware, but not all do. Exclusions include certain older or unsuitable Go, Bloom, Iris, Lightstrip, Smart Plug, accessory, contact-sensor, camera, and motion-sensor products. Check exact model IDs and firmware using the Hue app’s software-update area and consult the official compatibility list. Do not assume that a product name alone proves compatibility.
Best Value
- SECURITY THAT WORKS WITH YOUR PHILIPS HUE LIGHTS: Hue Secure sensors integrate seamlessly with your existing Philips Hue lights; When motion is detected, your lights can turn on automatically.
- STAY IN THE KNOW, WHEREVER YOU ARE: Get real-time motion notifications sent directly to your phone. Trigger alarms right from the Hue app.
- ONE APP, COMPLETE CONTROL: Control your Hue lights, cameras, sensors, and security notifications from a single app. The Hue app puts your entire smart home security system in the palm of your hand.
- SUPREME PEACE OF MIND - When armed, the contact sensors send a real-time alert to your mobile device- and can even turn on lights as soon as they are triggered.
- AUTOMATE YOUR LIGHTS - The contact sensors are perfect for frequently used areas. Have the hallway light turn on when the front door opens, for example.
Can you use both?
Yes. A hybrid setup can be the most practical option. MotionAware can cover a broad indoor room while a dedicated sensor handles a doorway or blind spot. A sensor can also provide daylight-aware behavior, cover an outdoor approach, or act as a fallback for an automation that matters.
Basic setup and calibration
- Confirm that you have a Hue Bridge Pro.
- Update the Bridge and Hue lights through the Hue app.
- Check that at least three lights in the intended area are compatible by model number.
- Create a MotionAware area in the Hue app.
- Select three or four lights to define the area.
- Calibrate sensitivity as directed by the app.
- Choose the time periods when movement should be active.
- Assign the lights that should respond.
- Walk through the area repeatedly, including the routes people normally take.
- Recalibrate or reconsider the light arrangement if detection is unreliable.
Bridge Pro can connect by Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Philips Hue recommends Ethernet for maximum stability while supporting Wi-Fi placement; its setup guide covers current onboarding steps.
What about Apple Home, Alexa, Matter, or other platforms?
Hue supports integrations including Apple Home, Alexa, Google Assistant, Samsung SmartThings, Matter, and IFTTT. That does not automatically prove that every platform exposes a MotionAware area as a normal motion-sensor device. If you need MotionAware to trigger non-Hue equipment, verify support for your specific platform before replacing a conventional sensor. Philips Hue’s developer information is available through its developer program.
